  1. Actually, woolwhippet, I did the exact same thing. I was self-diagnosed, I hadn't been sick long enough for a biopsy to come back positive. So I convinced myself I was 'only' gluten intolerant, as oppsed to having real Celiac disease. So on New year's I ate Chinese food with soy sauce, and had the worst New Year's ever. Now my boyfriend won't even kiss me...
  2. You can get ghee at my health food store, might be available in your area...... I never thought of that.
  3. Oooo, I would say that all the gluteny food is more of a danger to you than Play-do. Perhaps get a separate toaster for you and designated cutting board? That way none of your food will have to touch where their food did. As for Play-do and things, just scrub your hands extra special till they're red and you should be safe, I think...... I've never had a...
  4. I think it's terrible that so many people have family that just aren't willing to accept that you have a real disease. I live in the same building as my parents (my father has cancer and we stay on separate floors so we can be here to help her take care of him) and since we've been living together she's only offered me food with wheat in it once. Fortunately...
  5. I actually went straight to honey and coconut oil. Honey to spread lightly on anything I would have spread butter on (except for savory things, which I use raw olive oil for) and coconut oil to cook in. I use olive oil for cooking when coconut oil would make it taste funny, like steak.
  6. I'm sorry they're having trouble understanding, it may take time for them to realize how important this is. I think the text on the homepage of this website is very informative and helpful, especially the statistics about untreated celiac disease sufferers being at higher risk of cancer. That should help get their attention. For food suggestions, you might...
  7. Good for you! As for the food thing, all I can say is eggs, eggs, eggs! If you can tolerate them, they're easy, to cook and clean up, and they translate into dinner very well with some avocado and salsa or onions and cheese. I've eaten eggs almost every day for one meal or another and I have literally never felt this good.
  8. Aleve is made from naproxen, which is part of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory family of drugs, called NSAIDS, along with ibuprofen. It works great, but if you can't have anti-inflammatories it won't work for you. I'd ask the doc for a low dose narcotic.
  9. I usually suffer for about two days. The fatigue and brain blurring last a few days longer though. You might try suggesting restaurants that have really nice salad bars, not pizaa restaurants though. I can usually go to Ruby Tuesday's (chain) and they have such a great salad bar that I actually get filled up, and I don't have to worry about anything really...
  10. Oh, and is it FISH oil or COD LIVER oil? Just plain fish oil won't do as much, stepping up the quality of it made a big difference for me. That and all the vitamins in cod liver oil will help repair his system. And keep in mind, it took me almost a year to get completely back to 'normal', which wound up being way better than before I got 'sick', it's a frustrating...
  11. Acod, can you tell us what kind of probiotic? Was it a broader spectrum with a number of different organisms or was it just 2 or 3? And I know it may not sound like it, but if you can find any raw goat's milk and get a kefir starter, fermented raw goat's milk is quite frequently tolerable to people with casein/lactose problems. And it would be VERY nutritious...
  12. I know! I wish he'd go gluten-free too, his book is what helped me make my self-diagnoses when all my doctors were being obtuse. I was taking his probiotic until a few weeks ago when I read the ingredients again after a YEAR of not paying attention, I think I've been glutened twice in that time from his pills, now that I know that. I couldn't figure out those...
  13. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Yeah, especially on those loooong car rides..... when you're lost.... in Idaho. Whoooo.....
  14. Actually, Muir Glen and Wolfgang Puck and Amy's make some super yummy soups, I just buy a whole crapload and bring them and a canopener to work and leave them in my desk. They're easier to determine if they're gluten free, they don't have all those unpronounceable ingredients. Also, SunnyDy, you might try putting those nut/fruit mixes into baggies in individual...
  15. Treatments: acupunture and herbs issues: He loves to eat, but, where does it go? His abdomen and intestine are in constant pain. He was tested and treated for intestinal bacteria overgrowth, and after that treatment, there was no real change.
  16. I so know what you mean about being tired of cooking! I figured out the easiest, yummiest dinner ever: meatloaf. 2lbs ground meat 1/2 fine chopped big onion 1 cup gluten-free bread crumbs salt, pepper, mustard, garlic, whatever blows up your skirt 1 big or 2 little eggs big huge squirt of ketchup enough to make it all mushy And you just mix...
  17. Huh. And I thought I was paranoid before....... Good thing they make sticky stamps.
  18. Try beating HIS head against the desk instead of yours!!!!
  19. You can get glutened from envelopes?
  20. Yeah, you definitely got glutened (contaminated by gluten) with that spoon honey. Welcome to the club! I used to do that all the time. Now we just use Tinkyada, which is fabulous by the way. DONT try Deboles rice pasta, it's terrible. I usually wait until Stop & Shop has a sale on Tinkyada and buy a bunch. Oh, and did you use soy sauce in the stir fry...
  21. Also Dori, you might want to double-check any medications you take. I just realized the probiotic I've been taking has glutened me twice in the past year. If you still feel dizzy and fuzzy in the head, it might be time to rethink the way you treat high cholesterol. High cholesterol is NOT due to the causes most people think it is. I recommend going to...
  22. Actually, the best cookie I ever had was from the Whole Foods Gluten-Free Bakehouse in the freezer section. I used to BE a Girl Scout, ok? If anyone knows about those bloody cookies, it's me. The Whole Foods gluten-free chocolate chip cookie is FAR better than any girl scout cookie I ever had! And the peanut butter cookies are a close second. I HIGHLY recommend...
  23. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. Hi melissa, 'maltodextrin' is safe in the US. However, anything witht the word 'malt' in front of it or just the word 'dextrin' is not. I have no idea why, but there you go. On the home page of this website if you scroll down, there is a link to safe and unsafe food ingredients. I would print out the 'unsafe' and bring it shopping.
  25. Oh, I missed that bit. Ever so sorry.....
