  1. K, I weigh 135lbs, and the conversion thingy says I'm 61.23 kilos. Therefore, Lfrost, you are tiny. Please eat a sandwich. (Who else is tired of hearing that? Are you with me? )
  2. Ground beef, brown rice, broccoli, sauteed onion, doused in soy sauce & dumped in a bowl. We're philistines...
  3. It sounds to me like your 'hives' are actually dermatitis herpetiformis, which is a skin condition caused by Celiac. The fact that it resurges when you eat gluten free argues for this. I would spend some time on the DH section of the forum looking for advice and coping methods. I get this rash as well, and have never found anything that helps with the itch...
  4. Ya lush....
  5. I have the same reaction to stevia, have not yet found one to my liking. I have been thinking about learning how to bake with it. Thus far, I have been baking with honey and maple syrup and occasionally agave nectar.
  6. Gets my vote!
  7. HAHAHAHAAAA!!!! I'm sorry, I have no advice, I just think your reaction to your husband's Philistine tastes in food is freakin hilarious!
  8. 28. I tried to think of something funny to accompany this information the way everyone else did, but I got nuthin.
  9. My understanding is that Stevia makes chocolate 'seize' unless done exactly right, so you might want to avoid that. As far as I know that's the only zero-calorie natural sweetener out there. You are correct about honey, it is one of the best, most healthy options available for sweetener. I have been buying 'york peppermint patties' from Trader Joe's that...
  10. It might seem overly paranoid, but it IS good to have these kinds of plans and go-bags. Especially with non-perishable foods. Have meeting places with family members. Having a plan for escaping the house in the event of a fire allowed my boyfriend to safely escape the house.... during a fire! And if I'd had a go-bag in my car, I wouldn't have been left...
  11. I have said before, I watched an episode of Dirty Jobs, with Mike Rowe, where he visited a cooperage associated with a particular winery, and they were sealing the barrels with wheat paste. This was most definitely in the US. Also most definitely in the past ten years. I do not recall the name of the winery, although I would imagine getting in touch with...
  12. Green's Amber Ale and Dubbel Dark are both very good, the dark is a bit sweet, oddly. For Woodchuck's, the Granny Smith flavor has half the sugar.
  13. Cathleen, I tried to Google the restaurant you referenced, and cannot find it. Can you tell me the address or anything else about the restaurant?
  14. MY problem with cookbooks is once I open one I stop cooking! I just wind up paging through the whole thing because the pictures are so engaging and oh look it's dinnertime.... Instead, I go to allrecipes and use the ingredient list function. If I have spaghetti squash, garlic, and tomato basil chicken sausage, you plug that into the recipe finder and...
  15. Marie, a fairly effective natural remedy for diarrhea is turmeric tea. Just dump a tablespoon in cup of boiling water twice a day. Helps kick inflammation and infection too. A lot of people try turmeric tea for boils (and it frequently works very well for that!) and then they wind up constipated. So, good for diarrhea!
  16. Short answer- you don't know. If your shampoo has wheat in it, that CAN make you sick. If your date had gluten and kisses you, that CAN make you sick. If your cosmetics have gluten, they CAN make you sick. Some people don't react to these things. That's fine. If it CAN make me sick, I don't care. I avoid it. It's much easier to avoid such things than to be...
  17. Big fat storms rolled through here, dumped buckets in one hour, rolled out and left it cooler. Whew! Our landscaping on the house was finally getting done and I was WORRIED about those guys!
  18. I get olive oil fried potato chips from Trader Joes, I LOVE them! Can make them at home, but much easier to buy a bag! Or six... From what you posted from the EJ website, only the chocolate bars have the not-ok sugar in them. Maybe the chocolate chips are ok? I lurvs the chocolate chips! The website says they label anything that might have corn. Also...
  19. You guys said we couldn't go to Sylvia's unless we shoveled! I assume that mens snow. You can do 'pulled pork' with chicken, too! I ruined some chicken one day, got way too frikkin dry. So I shredded it and put it in a pot with barbecue sauce, worked great! Sorry I disappeareded, been CRAZY busy!
  20. This one's easy- just use ground beef for the taco salad?
  21. Of course, at the last Renaissance festival I went to (not sure if this counts) they were selling chocolate covered bananas. MY face: My hubby's face: Dinner! Dinner, I had frozen gluten-free meals for dinner last night, was out....
  22. I'm going bananas waiting for the Les Mis movie to come out. They got Hugh Jackman to sing on screen... oy joy!!
  23. Where on earth do you live that baked beans, sausage and peppers, and corn on the cob is carney food? In New England that's a normal dinner! Carney food out here is always fried/battered/basted/beaten or covered in caramel.
