ARCHIVED Tattoo To Symbolise Being Diagnosed?
ravenwoodglass replied to CourtneyLee's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You shouldn't react to the ink but try not to use red as that is more likely to cause reactions in people. You could look up words that are meaningful to you in other languages that don't use the 'english' alphabet or pick a symbol that means a lot to you. For example, my first tattoo was a butterfly which for me symbolized freedom, I have one that symbolizes... -
ARCHIVED Petromalt
ravenwoodglass replied to Emilushka's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the warning. In the 'old' days we used to put a small amount of butter on the kitties paws once a day to help with hairballs. Get a good hairbrush for the kitty and brush him a couple times a day to help prevent them and if your kitty will let you use the vacuum cleaner hose on him that can help also. Some cats hate it but some enjoy it. I hope... -
ARCHIVED Digest Gold? Maltase From What Source?
ravenwoodglass replied to IrishHeart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do make sure to tell your dentist that you are celiac and ask them to check everything they use for you. While most of what they use is gluten free not everything is. Best to have them check to be certain. -
ARCHIVED Any Thoughts On These Blood Results?
ravenwoodglass replied to Kim27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you checked all meds and supplements for gluten? Generic scripts should be checked with each refill as they can change binders at will. Watch out for barley and wheat grass in supplements as they can still carry a gluten free label. Your doctor is giving you good advice about staying out of restaurants for now, where do you usually go? Are you telling... -
ARCHIVED "may Contain Label"
ravenwoodglass replied to dmeagan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wouldn't touch the product if the warning is for wheat and greatly appretiate the companies that warn us of the possibility. -
ARCHIVED Microwaving Sponges?
ravenwoodglass replied to fakename's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If that is something you are worried about you could let the sponges cool before taking them out of the microwave. It won't 'kill' any gluten in them. If you live in a mixed house you might want to use color coded sponges for gluten and gluten free cleaning of items. Another option might be using damp paper towels to wipe down surfaces of gluten crumbs and... -
ARCHIVED Undigested Food After Procedures
ravenwoodglass replied to superfob's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had this happen once when I had a bad reaction to a med that gave my pancreas a whap. If this is something you haven't seen before you should call your GI doctor and report it today. -
ARCHIVED Update
ravenwoodglass replied to missj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since you're wondering about the sugar issue keep up the gluten challenge but delete the high amounts of sugar. Personally I would think the reaction is likely from the gluten. Go with breads, stuff like triscuits, cream of wheat etc if you want to do gluten without all the sugar in cake and cookies. -
ARCHIVED What Pain Meds Have Worked The Best?
ravenwoodglass replied to WitchyWoman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You have sure been through a lot. Hopefully after you have been gluten free for a while your pain will resolve a bit. I don't know if it will be helpful for you but for joint pain I use asprin and for stomach pain I use Pepto Bismal. I don't usually have either unless I get glutened. Nothing really helps with the intesinal cramping from being glutened but... -
ARCHIVED Not Feeling Better
ravenwoodglass replied to sfamor's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried eliminating soy and casien? Intolerances would not show up on allergy testing so even if you didn't show postive to them on allergy testing they may still be an issue. Also are you taking any meds or supplements? Supplement labels need to be read throughly because some contain barley or wheat grass which isn't safe for us even though the label... -
ARCHIVED To Have Or Not To Have
ravenwoodglass replied to ship's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Child one, yes that was a postive test. As to the second child who is also having issues do keep in mind that celiac testing can come back a false negative on both blood and biopsy at a fairly high rate. You should so a strict gluten free trial on both children when all testing is done. -
ARCHIVED Glutening Myself Tonight
ravenwoodglass replied to NancyL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You haven't been gluten free for very long. If you are reluctant to have this surgery and it isn't a life or death matter like uterine cancer you could hold off for at least a couple of months and see if it resolves on the diet. If it doesn't then you could go ahead with the surgery. You could also ask her about doing another freeup of the adhesions. They... -
ARCHIVED Waterproof Tape
ravenwoodglass replied to beatha's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have problems with many types of adhesive tape. Perhaps until the knee brace you have ordered comes in an ace wrap or OTC knee support band might help. My knees dislocate because of a hypermobility syndrome and I have found good supports in sports supply shops. -
ARCHIVED Update
ravenwoodglass replied to missj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you having the scopes for celiac diagnosis? I hate to have to say this but if you are you shouldn't be going gluten free yet. I find name brand Pepto Bismal liquid to work very well for stomach pain, you may want to try it if it is something you can take. Celiac can cause ulcers and stomach irritation so if you do have them they may resolve on the diet... -
ARCHIVED Update
ravenwoodglass replied to missj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are gluten free already you will have negative tests. You need to be on a diet that includes gluten in 'regular' levels, like at least 4 to 6 slices of bread a day for about 3 months before the tests have any chance of showing a positive. If you need a diagnosis then do the 3 month challenge and get retested. If the challenge makes you very ill you... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge
ravenwoodglass replied to vegan lisa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It actually has a name, when we have the brain lesions and balance issues it is called 'Gluten ataxia'. -
When I was first diagnosed an outbreak was one of the first signs I had been glutened usually happening within a couple of hours. Now it is one of the last. I think because the antibodies have left my skin for the most part and it takes a couple days for them to build back up and cause a reaction.
-
Are you having any glutened symptoms that you have noticed? For me feeling like that is what I feel the first day after I have been glutened. Feeling like that could also be a sign of depression.

ARCHIVED How Long Til gluten-free Diet Shows Cognitive Improvements?
ravenwoodglass replied to Twizzel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might want to eliminate soy and dairy now for a bit. Then when you have been feeling better for a while add them back in one at a time for at least a week and watch for a return of symptoms. If you do decide to do an elimination diet if you can get an allergist or naturopathic doctor to guide you that is a better way to go then dropping everything.... -
ARCHIVED How Long Til gluten-free Diet Shows Cognitive Improvements?
ravenwoodglass replied to Twizzel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was pretty badly impacted cognitively and suffered from deep periods of depression off and on since childhood. By the time I was diagnosed I couldn't read any longer because I couldn't remember a sentence long enough to be able to read the next one. I had trouble with speech often calling things by the wrong names or being unable to get the words even out... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Brands
ravenwoodglass replied to K8Hanna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Since you know you don't tolerate gluten personally I wouldn't bother with the gene testing unless it is just something you are curious about. Many places only test for two of the associated genes and there are definately 9 or possibly as many as 27 that are associated with celiac. Gene testing can be part of the diagnostic process but it not the final word... -
I don't know if everyone does but I seemed to.

ARCHIVED What Does It Feel Like?
ravenwoodglass replied to concernedmamma's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Couldn't have described it better myself. My intestines hurt so much when I get glutened that I can't even button my jeans and my stomach pain could be best described as feeling like someone is stabbing me under my ribs and turning the blade slowly. It has been bad enough at times that I wondered if I was having a heart attack. That's when I start chugging... -
The only thing we can do to prevent it is not get glutened. I have found that the longer I am gluten free the milder my DH outbreaks are. I used to be covered in it and the tiniest amount of gluten would cause an outbreak. By the time I had been gluten free for a couple years I would just get one or two itchy little sores when I get glutened. With DH for...

ARCHIVED When Will I Feel Better?
ravenwoodglass replied to ndw3363's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The withdrawl can be a bear but it will pass. With the DH try to avoid iodine in foods and supplements for bit until the flares resolve. It can take some time to heal and do go with as many whole unprocessed foods as you can. Make sure your not sharing condiments and have replaced scratched cookware, colanders and get a dedicated new toaster. I hope your...
