  1. Yes you can become asymptomatic. That is why doctors used to think that children would outgrow celaic. In children or teenagers this is more common I think than in older folks. Doctors call it a honeymoon period when a person seems to be able to go back to eating gluten after being gluten free for a while. It can take some time for the antibody reaction to...
  2. Do not take pepto unless you clear it with the doctor first. As the other poster said that can be a sign that you are bleeding in your stomach. I would call the doctors office and ask to be put on his call back list tommorrow. If by some chance he doesn't do call backs ask to be put on the cancellation list or if you can get an earlier appointment if the...
  3. I think these are unbelievably overpriced! Get a good gluten-free multi, like from Country Life or Now or even your local drug or grocery store and some probiotics. Just as good if not better and much much less costly. You live in NJ, if you have a Wegmans nearby get your multi there. They are really good about labeling and very inexpensive.
  4. It sounds like you have found what works for you. Glad you are feeling better.
  5. Yes. It is not uncommon for our reactions to gluten to seem to become more severe after accidental injestion when we become gluten free. Your body is starting to get some relief from the antibodies and when we get glutened after being gluten free it kind of goes 'Whoa, what are you doing' and gives us more incentive to keep away from it. I went from 'just...
  6. You have had the tests so go ahead and start the diet. Your body may give you the answer before you get the results back. Celiac is a disease that usually has a trigger and your illness overseas could have been the trigger. You are in a great place to learn what you need to learn to be gluten free. Start out by eating whole unprocessed foods and it is usually...
  7. Coming from someone who went through a lifetime of illness and true hell for the last 15 years before diagnosis (my family thought I was dieing for the last 5 of them) I have to agree with your plan. There are benefits to having a firm diagnosis but there can also be downsides, like problems with health and life insurance. If your body has let you know that...
  8. Is it possible to eat smaller meals more frequently to see if that helps? It might not work for you but when I wanted to gain weight I always kept a package of Wylde pretzels on hand and munched throughout the day. One package is about a thousand calories and since I can usually only eat one meal a day it helped me gain the weight I needed within a few...
  9. The first thing you should do is contact your doctor and ask for testing. There are tests to find out if this is the case. You would swallow a solution, make sure to tell them it needs to be gluten free, then they do x-rays to see how long it takes the solution to pass through. If gastroparesis is present you doctor will advise you from there.
  10. It is not all in your head. It takes a while to recover from the damage, it didn't occur overnight and won't go away instantly either. Be sure you check all meds and supplements you take, eat a whole food unprocessed diet and learn about CC issues. There is a bit of learning to this gluten free thing but you will get it. Your in a great place to learn what...
  11. I was thought to have MS for quite a while. My MRI showed multiple lesions but they were not is quite the right place to be demylinating lesions. A subsequent spinal showed no debris that would normally be found in MS. The neuro called my lesions UBOs, which means unidentified bright objects and told me they meant nothing despite all the issues I was having...
  12. I like those also. Add in some frozen veggies and perhaps a bit of leftover meat and you have a complete meal.
  13. No you do not want to have a healthy gallbladder removed, and no good doctor would do it anyway without disease present. The wonky liver panels are often seen in us and once we have been gluten-free for a while those numbers usually normalize. Are you being strict about avoiding the other intolerances you have?
  14. Your symptoms do sound like celiac. Now for the really bad news, if you want a doctor derived diagnosis you need to get back on gluten. Even with a 3 month period on gluten you may still have a false negative on testing. One option is to go with Enterolab, they can test for the antibodies in the stool, however most doctors do not accept their testing as...
  15. Nice to hear you are feeling better and the doctor confirmed what you already knew. It makes it easier when they actually acknowledge what is going on. What sweetener is in the coke zero? Sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners can be really tough on the tummy though they are, as far as I know gluten-free.
  16. Forgiven. When I moved down south years ago it took me forever to get used to the way ya'all deal with food. One of my boyfreinds would walk to the frig in any home we entered. I thought it incredibly rude but everyone treated it like a really normal thing to do. If I had done that even at a relatives home here in NY my Mom would have backhanded me and...
  17. I would have replied with something like, "gee, it's a fad not to want to vomit or blow out your intestines on the toilet and then suffer a migraine and joint pain for a month!!! I never knew having a disease was a fad!! If your lucky you won't have to be someone who has to do this 'fad' diet in your lifetime as it is one of the most common diseases in the...
  18. I didn't use any special diet to increase absorption but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't help. I just don't know anything about it. One thing I would suggest, since your numbers are still dropping is to delete the gluten-free oats for a bit. Some of us do tolerate them but some of us don't. Could you drop them for a while and see if it helps? It sounds...
  19. It may still be okay for you. Not everyone is so sensitive that they worry about shared lines. If your supersensitive then do avoid it but if not then it may be okay. It has likely always been made on shared equipment but now they are letting us know.
  20. I believe it is the malabsorption that causes those low levels in us. In my case at least. Once I started absorbing nutrients again my levels became normal. I would personally like to slap the doctors who congratulated me on my low levels prediagnosis without listening to what my diet really was. They should have looked for the cause as the way I used to...

    ARCHIVED Should I Even Bother?

The genetic tests are not diagnostic. They can be a component of diagnosis but are not diagnostic on their own. In addition many labs only test for 2 of the celiac related genes not the full 9 that are associated. One lab that does test for all of the genes is Enterolab but many doctors do not accept their test results. Enterolab can tell you if you are making...
  22. That is your best bet with any drug, script or OTC. If they can't or won't give you an answer then go with a company that will.
  23. Very low cholesterol can be a problem. You are however are still okay according to the Mayo Clinic. The bold was added by me. "Ideally, keep your total cholesterol below 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), and your LDL cholesterol below 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L)
  24. My gosh no wonder you are stressed. With all you are doing, well it would kill me. One thing you might think of is hiring someone to help out with the housework and cooking. Perhaps your local high school or a college close by might have a student that would welcome a few extra dollars or perhaps even a older adult who is retired could help out on the weekends...
  25. Suave and Dove will clearly label gluten ingredients. If you prefer organic Giovanni shampoos and conditioners are gluten-free, don't know about the lotions. Garneir Nutritioneste is another company, I use their facial products, shampoos and conditioners, again do check the labels as some do have wheat but those are clearly labeled. I like Tom's of Maine...
