  1. I agree about the bread. While it is best to go with a whole unprocessed diet if you are tolerating the bread keep it in your diet. It is not good to go out and get a whole bunch of breads, cereals and pastry items and concentrate your diet around those, but it is not a good idea for folks to do that with a regular gluten diet either. You need nutrition and...
  2. Welcome to the board. There are lots of us who share the anger and grief. It gets better with time. We can not regain those lost years. All we can do is look forward. I have had celiac since I was 5 years old but wasn't diagnosed until I was in my late 40's. Life would have been very different if I had been diagnosed in childhood but the biggest struggle...
  3. Bring it up privately with the therapist. It is not unusual for the counselor to talk to family members seperately at times and maybe they will have some ideas.
  4. I am wondering why if you think it isn't an issue you asked the question in the first place. The choice is yours. There are many of us who do avoid it in toiletries. If you are continueing to have gluten issues then drop the stuff and see if it helps.
  5. If you suspect the items have been tampered with please discard them. I don't know how long you have been gluten free but if you are early on you may still be healing, you could be reacting to CC in the kitchen or from other sources but to be on the safe side I would toss them. The day you throw them out it might be a good idea to put your mixes or open containers...
  6. If you are instantly bloating you are reacting. I would avoid the foods that do that to you.
  7. Could you be a bit more specific? For example I know PF Changs is safe at Eastview but what others are? Is the gluten free community you refer to the support group in Rochester? I plan to get out and about here very soon and it would be great to know some safe places to go.
  8. I am glad to hear you are going back to the diet. The having to get up in the middle of the night thing is unfortunately all to familiar. I really don't miss those days at all and hopefully they will be a thing of the past for you also very soon. You'll get the hang of things again soon and we are here if you have any questions. There are a lot more...
  9. I wouldn't use it. There are some good volumizing shampoos that don't have wheat. Garneir makes some, for example, or Giovanni if you prefer the organic. Oh and just to be on the safe side since you mention your hair is thinning, Rogaine products used to have wheat, or did last I checked, so be careful with those if you decide to try them.
  10. I agree. The only exception might be with the flavored rums. Those I would check.
  11. I am so glad they figured it out. Your post is a good reminder for others to always mention trips out of the country or camping etc to their doctors when symptoms show up. Thanks for letting us know. I hope you continue to improve and are soon feeling great.
  12. If you don't have a problem with gluten then adding it back in wouldn't cause any reaction. Having a reaction to gluten after being off it is called a challenge. It is quite a valid tool in diagnosis. IMHO the best there is. It is more than just a hint that someone needs to avoid gluten.
  13. It sounds like your doctor is willing to diagnose you based on your dietary response. "He did ask me if I really needed the biopsy for any reason as with how I'm doing on this diet there would be no real reason to change my diet related to positive or negative celiac results." I would let him. He is a wise doctor.
  14. Try the Kinnickinnick pizza shells. I have never had a problem with those. I keep them in the freezer at all times. I take the left over pizza sauce from the first pizza and freeze it flat so I can break off what I need for future pizzas as there is much more in a jar than can be used for one pizza.
  15. Forgive me if you have already done these things but... Have you checked all meds and supplements to be sure they are gluten free? For supplements unfortunately this means reading all ingredients carefully as wheat grass and barley grass are thought to be gluten free but are not. Did you elliminate gluten from toiletries and all other non food items like...
  16. It is a more pronounced reaction because you have been gluten free. Your body is telling you that being gluten free is the way it wants you to be. It is not uncommon at all for the reactions to be more severe after we go gluten free.
  17. You made my day, thanks for posting this. I see Egyptian Meat pies in my future again! If you ever find gluten-free phyllo please let us know.
  18. Your doctor is wrong. The antibodies that form can attack any organ, pancreas, brain, muscles and joints, gallbladder well pretty much any organ it chooses. I hope you go gluten free rather than gluten light, your constipation is a sign that your body is trying to draw nutrition from your food because your digestive track is becoming compromised. Please don...
  19. Welcome to the board. Please keep in mind the possibility of a false negative on both blood and biopsy is relatively high. Do be sure to try the diet after the test is done. With a diagnosed son chances are really good with your symptoms you are one of us.

    ARCHIVED Doctor'S "Diagnosis"

I'm really sorry you waited so long for nothing. Here's hoping the diet gives you some relief. Your doctor was woefully ill informed.
  21. Did the doctor do any actual allergy testing? What symptoms is he saying are 'just allergies'. If you can consult an allergist who can test and figure out what you are allergic to so you can avoid it IMHO that is better than taking a med. As far as the Zyrtec goes if the rep couldn't tell you whether it was gluten free or not I would avoid it. Or call again...
  22. If she is good about the diet she may get better with the supplements. I had a student once who had a severe brain injury but really needed to feel she was responsible for herself. We used post it notes all over the place. Perhaps a post it on the door of the frig or her bathroom mirror that says 'Don't forget your supplements' might do the trick.
  23. Yes that was a postive test for celiac. Since you are done with testing start the diet. You could already have a great deal of relief by the time you go back for the results.
  24. If you should become extremely ill please let the GI know. It sounds pretty clear that you have an issue with gluten and in the long run it doesn't matter whether you are celiac or 'gluten intolerant' (there are some of us who consider them the same thing) the need to be strictly gluten free is the same for both. It sounds like you have had good results from...
  25. I hope you will forgive a bit of clarification. The antibodies in the skin take up to two years to leave but the lesions themselves will heal quicker than that gluten free. However even a small amount of gluten will cause a new outbreak until those antibodies have gone. After the antibodies have finally resolved DH outbreaks should be milder and quick to...
