Welcome to the board. If you are already gluten free or gluten light testing for celiac will be a false negative. What are you typically eating? Going with whole unprocessed foods is the best for us at first. Are you eating many gluten free replacement foods? We can have problems with some of those especially if they contain Codex Wheat Starch (some consider...

ARCHIVED Do You Get A Flu Shot?
ravenwoodglass replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I never have gotten one and won't this year. I wash my hands a lot and haven't gotten ill since the year I was diagnosed and hope that continues. (knock wood) I was a bit nervous about catching it when I went back to college and then started working with the public but so far so good. -
ARCHIVED So Exasperated With Lazy People...
ravenwoodglass replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is a slew of research showing a link between things like ADHD, depression, fatigue and skin issues in us that resolve once we are diagnosed. While celiac is not always the reason it would be good if she would agree to test not only the kids but also herself. Have you tried encouraging her just to get testing done? If she is a close freind perhaps she... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis Without Positive Bloodwork? Fever?
ravenwoodglass replied to kelly97's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kelly, With a Marsh 3 biopsy the likelyhood you have celiac is pretty high. I noticed you have been diagnosed with MS. How did they reach that diagnosis? Was it based on lesions found on a brain MRI and if it was did they follow up with a spinal tap to look for the debris that is found in MS patients? The reason I ask is because gluten ataxia causes lesions... -

Welcome to the board. Very wise words for a first post. -
ARCHIVED Profession Change?
ravenwoodglass replied to intolerant baker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The biggest concern with baking isn't topical exposure it is breathing in the flour dust. Unfortunately yes a change in workplace is going to be needed. You may still be able to cook but you shouldn't bake unless the flours you are using are gluten free. Perhaps you could use your talents freelancing for different restaurants in your area by coming in on... -
ARCHIVED Can Gluten Molecules Permeate Egg Shells?
ravenwoodglass replied to kwylee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the pan was washed well I wouldn't worry about it. If the shell was cracked IMHO it might be more of a concern. Your idea to boil some eggs in water with food coloring as an experiment sounds good to me. Let us know the outcome if you do it. -

ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to guest134's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor can see if your growth plates have fused with a simple X-ray. If they haven't then you could see a bit more growth but most times by 21 the plates have fused. Some undiagnosed celiac males barely make it to 5' so if your plates have fused do try and take comfort in the fact that you at least made it to an average height for most of the population... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to guest134's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good to hear you are going to retest. I am assuming you are staying on gluten until then since otherwise you won't know if the numbers drop from being off gluten or because it was a false positive. As to the gene testing please know that gene testing can not rule celiac in or out as they usually only test for the most common celiac associated genes and there... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Clever Wording Help
ravenwoodglass replied to kareng's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good response. It still amazes me that my little restaurant in a small Upstate NY city could safely train me to feed celiacs and other food intolerant folks 20 years ago and someplace that is training professional chefs today can't do it. Just wish I'd known I needed the same safe food for myself back then. LOL -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to guest134's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't see a anti-tTG in your test results. Could be wrong though as I am not a medical professional. The two test results that I consider significant are bolded. The anti-tTG tests can be positive with other issues but not AFAIK the tests that I bolded. Your test results from first post follow: Total IgA 2.38 (0.69-3.82) Deamidated Gliadin IgG 11... -
ARCHIVED Most Evil Wife Ever
ravenwoodglass replied to Adalaide's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Is your hubby gluten-free also? If not I would just let him eat his chemical packed junk and keep my yummy treats to myself. And I would slap his hand when he reached for any of mine. But of course then you would be the evil wife for not sharing. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to guest134's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False positives are so rare they are practically non-existant. I agree with the others. I would give anything to have been diagnosed before extreme damage was done. I am one of the unfortuanate 30% that show up false negative in testing. IMHO you are lucky to have been diagnosed before you got a signature like mine and so many of the other older posters here... -
ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
ravenwoodglass replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It contains traces of soy but lactose is one of the actual ingredients. I think you might be better off asking here in the products section for suggestions on almond or rice milk. There is also hemp milk which is high in easily digestable protein. As far as rice milk is concerned do stay away from Rice Dream. If you live near a Wegmans their rice milk is... -
ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
ravenwoodglass replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The Florastor contains both lactose and traces of soy. Have you tried eliminating soy and all dairy with her? There are quite a few of us who are intolerant to it. In myself it causes stomach pain and reflux but don't know if that may be the case with her. -
ARCHIVED I"ve About Had Enough Of This !
ravenwoodglass replied to ncdave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
They look good to me and hopefully Rose will reply also. One thing I would suggest is to add them in one at a time for 4 or 5 days starting with the B12. That way if you do have an adverse reaction to any of the ingredients it would be easier to pinpoint which one was causeing an issue. I don't anticipate that there will be any problems with any of them but... -
ARCHIVED Needing Reassurance :-)
ravenwoodglass replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes. If you had a positive biopsy get on the diet even though the bloods were negative. If they want to rebiopsy in a year to see how you have healed that would not be a bad idea but personally I would skip the gluten challenge. You will likely do enough of those accidentally while learning the ins and outs of the diet. -
ARCHIVED I"ve About Had Enough Of This !
ravenwoodglass replied to ncdave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dave even though your doctor said your B12 levels were fine 9 months ago it would still be a good idea to get some sublingual B12. It is very important that it be sublingual as your damaged intestines won't be able to absorb a swallowed tablet. You do sound like it might help a great deal. Did you get your actual numbers from the doctor? Some consider anything... -
All I had to do was cut out iodized salt for a few months and my DH was severe before diagnosis. It can take up to 2 years for the antibodies to leave the skin and until then even a tiny amount of cross contamination from gluten will cause the DH to flare. I have added back in iodized salt, it is an important nutrient and should not be avoided forever, and...

ARCHIVED Colonoscopy - What To Ask And What To Expect
ravenwoodglass replied to Pegleg84's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree get both procedures done at the same time. They won't be able to diagnose celiac if you have been gluten free for years but they can rule out other problems like ulcers and make sure your villi are fully healed and that you are not dealing with refractory celiac. -
ARCHIVED Mashed Potatoes In A Box
ravenwoodglass replied to learning2BGF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Paradise mashed potatoes. The only ingredient is potatos. Most including those have you add milk. If you are intolerant of casien (milk protein) almost all butter replacements have casien and or soy. Real butter however is safe for most who are dairy intolerant. I've used it for years since I found that out and had no problems. It is very, very low... -
Your not alone. Until a freind from 20 years ago came back into my life last year I hadn't had any friends in many, many years. It is hard. Do you have any hobbies? Sometimes we can make friends when we share an interest like stamp collecting, playing pool, book clubs etc.

ARCHIVED Entertaining With Gluten
ravenwoodglass replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What about getting some gluten-free rolls for everyone? If you feel you must do gluten rolls for company then perhaps give them a small bread and butter plate. If they know about your celiac I don't see why they would have a problem with keeping their gluten bread on the plates if they are all adults. If kids are there then that would be another story. Oh... -
ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
ravenwoodglass replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do keep in mind that IBS is a symptom not a diagnosis. It would be a good idea for both of you to do a gluten free trial for at least a couple months after all testing for celiac is done. False negatives are all too common. I hope you both get some relief soon.
