  1. Surely it will get better from here...... To sum up- Lucas has been glutened twice since school started (1st grade,) missing three days of school combined. Ezra immediately caught a bug upon entering preschool. I know this is common, but I hoped he'd already built up resistances from being exposed to his brother, who's been in school for...
  2. Melissa, Oh, how incredibly frustrating! I just hate that kind of thing, especially on Fridays- now you're stuck till Monday From what you describe though, I'd stick to your guns about not switching doctors. If she's awesome, stick with her despite the slack office staff. You might have to make a "pest" of yourself to make up for their shortcomings...
  3. Yay! Happy Birthday, Baby!!! -Sarah
  4. I'm in a rural area of NC, and I drive nearly an hour and a half just to get to a Whole Foods. There are no gluten-free restaurants or bakeries within driving distance I'd say people would probably drive quite a ways to get there. -Sarah
  5. Yay!!! I am soo glad she is feeling better! Hey, actually a bandana might work even better for her- there's a jillion cute prints you can find. She may start a trend, and soon all the other 5th grade girls will be doing it too. -Sarah
  6. It sounds like they are the same way my brother and I were at that age. I was the older one, he's a year and a 1/2 younger than me. We were horrible to each other! I feel so bad for my poor mom. If it makes you feel any better, my brother and I have a fantastic relationship as adults. I don't have very much advice... my kids are younger, and they do fight...
  7. OMG. Are we taking steps backward instead of forward? Between this and the article BBC News put out... this is really infuriating. That's not even to mention the blatant cattle behavior of the audience members. Hand someone a microphone and put them on stage, and everyone will agree with him. Dr. McCallum sounds like the cult leader now, doesn't he? ...
  8. Hi, Texasblue. Don't worry about long posts! We don't have insurance companies telling us not to spend more than 5 minutes with someone My opinion is that you are on the right track. I am a strong believer in our Mother's Instinct. So, of all the options you listed, as tempting as it may be, don't just let things lie as they are. No child should have...
  9. Thank you for the recipes! -Sarah
  10. Oh dear. This worries me. A lot. I keep hearing things here and there about new labeling laws... Is this what people are referring to when they talk about Codex? I'm really, really worried about this. Now companies can label things gluten-free, when they're not?? What's the deal with this? -Sarah
  11. OMG I have no idea if beef jerky is ok during pregnancy or not, but you should just call your Dr office. They'll be able to tell you, so you don't have to wait till your appt. -Sarah
  12. Wow, that is a lot of restrictions! Still, there are other people here with the same restrictions, so hopefully you'll get some responses from them. The best suggestion I'd have is to be on a constant search for new recipes. www.recipezaar.com is my favorite place to get ideas, and you can search for stuff that is "Free of..." several different allergens...
  13. Omg, that is awful! Did they at least offer your money back? I mean, you told them more than once that you couldn't have the darn crackers, and then they put them on anyway! You ended up sick because of it! ...wait a sec... $150, and their topping is Ritz crackers?! Jeez, I think I would've asked for my money back on that account, if nothing else...
  14. Don't try to just substitute rice flour for wheat flour, and call it good (it won't be.) For gluten-free baked goods, you need to use a blend of gluten-free flours, such as: 1 1/2 c. sorghum flour 1 1/2 c. potato starch or cornstarch 1 c. tapioca flour (Carol Fenster's Flour Blend) There are premixed blends available for purchase, or you...
  15. Yeah, it could be the day after you buy it. If it were just required that food is labeled clearly, it wouldn't be such an issue! -Sarah
  16. They also said that there currently is no treatment for Celiac. Then they said the only treatment is a life-long gluten-free diet, which puts "some" Celiacs in remission. I would say it works for most, wouldn't you?
  17. Ouch. It's totally possible for gluten-eating dogs to live with gluten-free kids. Precautions just need to be taken, the same way as if there are gluten-eating people in the house. And of course, like mykidsmommy said, we don't really want the kids eating dog food anyway... There are some really excellent suggestions about keeping the child...
  18. Whoops, not sure why my link didn't work. Thank you ENF!!! -Sarah
  19. Happy Birthday everybody! -Sarah
  20. I know this seems harsh, but the dogs do not need food available to them all day. If they eat twice a day, then put their full dishes down for them at the same specific times every day. When they are done (whether the bowl is empty or not) put the dishes up. Keep the water down where they can get it, of course. I used to keep my dog's dish down, with food...
  21. Judy, thank you for the link! I missed the episode, but just went and read the article. It was very inspiring. I saw on the last page, there was a notice that said the message boards over there were so overwhelmed with responses from viewers, that Jenny and Holly were having trouble posting answers to questions! The website people are working on the technical...
  22. Hi, I posted this in the original thread that this article appeared in, but I wanted to make sure people saw it, so I started a new thread about it as well. Sorry if it's overkill, but I really wanted to be sure that people know they have this opportunity. I googled this article and found it on the BBC News website: Open Original Shared Link If you...
  23. I googled this article and found it on the BBC News website: Open Original Shared Link If you go to this page, scroll down and they have a form where you can submit a comment about this article. It just basically asks for your name, where you are from, and asks: " Have you self-diagnosed a food intolerance? What led you to do so? Has it worked...
  24. Ok, that article really enraged me. How incredibly thoughtless, how incredibly irresponsible, to write these things. -Sarah
  25. I so understand your frustration! Lucas is home today again because of a glutening. Second time he's missed school in two weeks. It's nerve-wracking. This time I haven't even figured out what it was from. The only suspect is the Lays chips he ate, if there was cc at the manufacturing plant. I don't know, he's never had problems with them before. I...
