  1. Some people do react badly to MSG. My MIL is one of those people. Personally, I have eaten the Lime Tostitos many times without any problems.
  2. Do you know for sure you have an ulcer? I would think you would already have a GI doctor if you have a diagnosed ulcer. The only reason I ask, my primary doctor thought I had one--I had these awful stabbing stoamach pains that fit every description you find on the internet for ulcers, but a endoscopy did not reveal one. But the pains went away on the gluten...
  3. Don't get me wrong. I'm not in the business of telling people what to do. If people have the knowledge to eat healthy and still choose not to, that is their right. If a diagnosed celiac doesn't want to eat a gluten-fre diet, that is his right. I get what you and Tarnalberry are getting at, but I stand by my assertion that everyone *should* know what...
  4. For general bodily inflammation--I get horribly achy when I accidentally eat gluten, I second the epsom salt baths and also suggest green tea--either the tea it self or extract supplements.
  5. But most people aren't getting along just fine. All the undiagnosed celiacs aside, what about the epidemic of obesity and diabetes? Cancer? Genetics is only half of the equation. The other half is lifestyle choices--including the food we eat.
  6. My personal theory is all this conflicting advice is because everyone deep down, including the scientists and doctors, know that mankind is not living up to it's healthy potential, so they desperately search for the reasons why. And the reason IMHO is gluten, but it is so ubiquitious, and seems so benign, it just can't be that. So they go in the wrong direction...
  7. I personally would not see the doctor your mother works for, unless you are sure he will still recommend you staying on the gluten-free diet, even if you test negative for celiac. Because chances are you will test negative, and when you do, your mother will see it as irrefutable proof nothing is wrong with you, and she will think you are crazy to stay on...
  8. Sorry, but I don't think this is an apt analogy. Like TrillumHunter said. " Not everyone plays the madolin, but EVERYONE eats!" I also don't mean to be snarky, but do kids not watch those movies in school anymore where they show you bread comes from wheat and milk comes from cows? I've known since 2nd grade where my food comes from. I'm not that old-...
  9. I have no additional advice, but I laughed so hard when I read that as I am also Methodist!
  10. If you can do beans and legumes this is one of my favorites: Open Original Shared Link I also love this recipe. I've had it so long, I forget where I got it: Winter White Chili: 1/2 lb. ground turkey (or ground chicken) 1/2 medium onion 1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. oregano 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes (optional...
  11. 1. Yes, I think it is natural for people to do that, and it is a dangerous trap to fall into. I used to do the same thing with my allergies--I blamed all my health problems on them, mainly because the doctors didn't think anything else was wrong with me, until things got bad enough that I finally realized it had to be more than just allergies. While celiac...
  12. Yes, any food allergy or intolerance can mimic glutening symptoms including digestive symtpoms. Strawberries are a VERY common food allergy. If you have any swelling or tingling of the mouth and/or tongue this is most definitely an allergic reaction.
  13. I'm so glad you asked this question, because I have been wondering the same thing with regard to my birth control pills. The past 2 months, my periods were so short, they were practically non-existant. Both times, I became concerned I was pregnant and took a pregnancy test. Now, it is very common for the pill to cause shorter periods, and for me they've...
  14. Sinus pressure can also cause eye twitching. And IME removing foods you are allergic too can get the stuff backed up in the sinuses moving, and cause temporary twitching.
  15. Sally Beauty Supply also carries Queen Helene.
  16. I also don't have an official diagnosis. But I pretty sure I was well on my way to a "gold standard" celiac diagnosis. I had that "just inflammation" line too. Why don't these doctors care about what causes the inflammation? I know that feeling of wanting an "official" diagnosis. I was lucky enough to test positive to a wheat allergy, which has helped...
  17. I am not a diagnosed celiac, though I truly believe had I continued to eat gluten a few more years, I would've has "passed" all those celiac tests. I just don't think I had enough damage yet. Anyway, even with my awful symptoms, it was a little overwhelming to think about not eating gluten forever. So what I have done is kept a food diary, and at the...
  18. I agree real apple cider vinegar is a good, safe gluten free choice, but shouldn't real red wine vinegar also be safe? Isn't is just fermented red wine and water? Am I missing something?
  19. Look at the predominant nutrient in the dates and any other food cravings. For awhile after going gluten-free, I strongly craved black beans and chocolate. Both are high in magnesium. The cravings calmed down when I added a magnesium supplement to my regimen. Incidentally, what clued me in was an article about PMS where a doctor said that women's chocolate...
  20. I just wanted to add that Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, and if you are having trouble with fat absorbtion, then Vitamin D supplements will have trouble absorbing also. In addition to taking the supplements, you might want to periodically get some sun so yor body produces some Vitamin D. Natural sun is best. Tanning beds are skin cancer machines....
  21. It's so wonderful to hear that someone has such a wonderful doctor. As far as your husband goes, if he is anything like mine, he'll come around. "The proof is in the pudding" as they say. As you start to feel better, he'll take notice, and he will be much more motivated to maintain your newfound wellbeing, even doing things that seem so trivial...
  22. I hate to say it, but if you are a woman and married, the easiest way is bring your husband into the exam room with you. Doctors, especially male doctors really sit up and take notice when you do that. And they don't give you crap or condecend you when your husband is there. That is how I got all my food allergy testing done when the doctor was relectant...
  23. I totally agree. There are actually 4 different proteins in wheat, gluten just being one of them. Many people who are allergic to wheat can eat barley and rye just fine, because it is the wheat specific proteins they are allergic to, not gluten. So as far as getting a throrough food allergy work-up, I would trust her. I wouldn't count on her knowing much...
  24. Hi It's been awhile since I last posted, but I had to respond to this post. My teeth are horrible. I have a ton of cavities despite good oral hygeine habits. I was so disapointed with my last dental appoint just 3 weeks ago--I had a new cavity and 2 spots of weak enamel that need to be "watched". This is all after being almost gluten free since last July...
  25. In a nutshell, probiotics are friendly bacteria naturally found in our guts that aid in digestion, and some research is showing aids in our immunity and immune response. They are killed by antibiotics just like the bad bacteria are, so if you've taken antibiotics you need to replensih them. Other gut problems can also cause the environment to be less than...
