  1. I chuckled a little at this, because I've been the exact same way. I'm actually not celiac, but I'm convinced my DH and his mother are. Some of DH's symptoms have gotten better eating gluten-lite, since I won't cook a gluten meal. My feeling is it doesn't hurt to try the diet. You have the gene tests that show your family is susceptible. I'm trying...
  2. I'm completely the opposite. I used to always be hot. When I was a kid, my mom had to cut the feet off my feetie pajamas, because I always complained of being hot and my feet sweating. About a year or two ago, when my chronic feeling ill and tired was at its worst, I started feeling cold all the time. Wearing socks to bed, lots of blankets, etc. ...
  3. I've thought about it, even fantasized about writing some of the doctors who treated me like a hypochondriac that I was finally diagnosed with a wheat allergy by a prestigious hospital. But the truth is the ones I really want to educate are the arrogant ones who will dismiss it anyway.
  4. Do you know exactly what kind of blood test it was? The skin test shows immediate allergic reactions, while depending on the test, the blood test could have been for immediate or delayed allergic reactions. If it was for delayed, it would explain the difference in the two types of testing. Also, melons and bananas cross-react with ragweed and apple...
  5. Doctors really need to truly LISTEN to their patients, especially women. Take them seriously, and believe them, and not assume they are hypochondriacs when you aren't able to solve their problem on your first try. Not just with celiac disease/gluten intolerance, but with everything. I can't tell you how many times a doctor basically accused me of being...
  6. A little late for the reply, but from what I understand about the blood tests, they actually mix standardized protiens of the foods with a sample of your blood to see if it reacts. So not eaing/eating the foods won't make a difference.
  7. I totally agree with Jessica. Unfortunately, you've always had these allergies, but your body was too preoccupied with fighting the wheat. I also think our poor bodies can only fight so much. And now that it has more energy, it can fight the other allergies harder, so it does-unfortunately for us. I have had a simialr experience. At first, going gluten...
  8. I find this so facinating. I too was "allergic" to everything. In my lastest round of allergy testing in December, after attempting since July to be gluten free, only a handful of things remained positive--my biggest triggers in previous testing. I'm still taking allergy meds, but I feel so much better than I have in the past. I'm hopeful the longer I...
  9. I totally agree with getting to the root of the problem. And like ravenwoodglass said, the celiac/lyme may be the root cause. You don't have take any meds if you don't want to, but at the same time you don't need to suffer any more than you have to. Your allergist should've talked to you about environmental control measures you can take, not just drugs...
  10. Celiac or not, it is disrespectful to leave a mess for someone else to clean up. The fact, your husband does that to start with is inconsiderate. The fact that he refuses to change his ways in order to help you get heathy is abhorent. I agree with the advice that you need to remind your husband that you are his wife, and it is his job to protect and...
  11. If you have confirmed strep from a throat culture, I would take the antibiotics. I also have battled with candida over the years from repeated courses of antibiotics for repeated sinus infections. But now I can occasionally take antibiotics with little complications. But to this day, I always take probiotics daily. And when I take the antibiotics...
  12. You know your body better than anybody else. Don't let any doctor make you doubt yourself or make you think you are crazy. I had my share of being told that things were all in my head, and that I needed antidepessents. Or that yes, I did have the problems I described, but I was exaggerating how bad they were. If you want some validation read "The...
  13. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice. But please keep us updated on what happens and what the GI says. My DH is also military, and I strongly suspect he is celiac/gluten intolerant. He fits the profile much better than I do, and he is feeling so much better since I started the gluten-free diet and his own gluten consumption is way down. I don't know...
  14. That is what they told me this past July when I had an endoscopy to look for an ulcer. I had all the classic symptoms, and everyone was convinced I had one, even though the H. pylori test was negative and Nexium didn't help my severe stomach pain and obvious adominal tenderness. Unfortunately, they didn't look in or biopsy my small intestine, but the...
  15. That is absolutely not true. Non-anaphylactic reactions can and do show up in allergy testing. My wheat allergy was finally diagnosed by skin testing, and it is certainly not an anaphylactic reaction. Intolerances, however do not show up with any type of allergy testing. And the type of allergy testing favored by allergists today only tests for IgE...
  16. Get either or both of these books: The Gluten Connection by Shari Lieberman or Going Against the Grain by Melissa Diane Smith. Both books explain very well how gluten grains are sabotaging EVERYONE"S health. They trace how each agricultural advance has actually caused a decrease in human's health--for everyone not just celiacs. I'm going through a...
  17. I agree with the comment that on some level she knows, but is in denial. Is there anyway you can get hold of the records of the doctor who originally diagnosed her and show them to her? Ask her what kind of doctor is she going to be if she ignores the lab reports and biopsies and diagnosis of other doctors? Of course her intestines have healed by...
  18. I'm technically not celiac, though I'm quite convinced many of my relatives are. But so far, I've refrained from encouraging them to get tested or try the diet because I know they aren't ready to listen. I just talk about me and how good I feel on the diet, and how happy and relieved that I have found the answer. I think the better I feel and the healthier...
  19. I don't have much advice, but I just wanted to say that I am so happy they have figured it out, and that you eventually will get treatment for it. If you can tolerate fruit juices, drink as much as you can. Liquid calories can add up quickly, which is why they always encourage you to cut them out when trying to lose weight.
  20. Do you mean when he takes a long shower? There are cases of hives that are caused by excess heat or cold. So a long, hot shower could trigger hives or just itching in a more mild reaction. . Also, do you use dryer sheets? They can cause skin irritation. Since they are heat activated, drying your warm body off on a towel with the dryer sheet residue...
  21. Please don't misunderstand me. I totally understand the severity of peanut allergies and the dangers of them. It's just that in my opinion the "manufactured in the same facility" is causing some unneccessary fear and paranoia. I have a friend with a peanut allergy. And foods she has eaten without incident for years, like your candy cane example, suddenly...
  22. It sounds to me like you may have a sinus infection. Sinus headaches can be very severe and mimic migraines. And infected sinus post nasal drip can irritate your throat and cause the patches and soreness, and swell the lymph nodes. Do you have any congestion?
  23. Even though the other 2 in your family have no symptoms, is their bloodwork okay? Maybe there is something all of you are consuming, and it is just affecting her more. Also, it might not be something she is eating. Ask if she shares make-up with her friends. I know I did at that age. Either the make-up itself could have gluten, or if she shares a lip...
  24. I'm also very angry with the doctors. I tested negative for celiac, but positive for a wheat allergy. Food allergies have been much more well-known than celiac, and it still took strong arming an allergist to do the test. No one would do it on their own accord. After countless allergy shots for pollen, a sinus surgery, consults with rheumatologists,...
