It gets a lot easier. When I first started, I would go to the grocery store. Spend easily 1 1/2 hours there, getting so side-tracked reading labels of stuff I wasn't even there for. I'd get home and my husband would come to help me unload the groceries and I'd say "Nope, I got it. It's just this one bag." First order of business is to get yourself...

ARCHIVED Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzels
Darn210 replied to Adalaide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Adalaide, I've thought about doing this before because those chocolate covered Glutino pretzels are so stinkin' expensive. Did you use salt free pretzels? -
ARCHIVED Positive Airline Experience
Darn210 replied to mushroom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Glad everything worked out for you, Shroomie...and glad to have you in the States again. Mental Note: When we go to visit Shroomie, don't use a travel agent and fly Air New Zealand. You DO know we're comin', right? . . . Eventually. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
Darn210 replied to Mnicole1981's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
First let me say that I don't have Celiac Disease . . . If I eat too much peanut butter or if I don't eat it WITH something, it gives me heart burn. -

Actually, I was hopin' we'd be invited over for ribs. -
If you "build" a meal, selecting items from the menu, it will provide the nutritional information (calories, fat, etc) but there is also a link for ingredients for that menu item at that point. When you look at the ingredients for something like one of the salads, it will list an item in the salad and then the ingredients that make up that item. The ...

ARCHIVED Mcdonalds Fries
Darn210 replied to ashesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lots of discussion on these fries. If you read some of the other threads, you'll see that McDonald's only cooks the fries and the hashbrowns at the fry station (which is closer to the front). A separate fryer station farther back is used for the chicken and fish. My daughter eats the fries. She does not have a problem with them. She gets a small... -
ARCHIVED How To Make The Wait Easier
Darn210 replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I will say that my wait for the GI appointment was a LOT longer (months) than my wait for the endoscopy (a week). Of course, while we were waiting for the GI, we didn't know what the heck was wrong so we weren't left with the same kind of dilema of knowing what will fix it and having to wait to start. Something that may or may not help with the symptoms... -

As long as the bugs in my tomato sauce are pureed I'm OK. I hate lumpy tomato sauce. -
ARCHIVED Stomach's In Knots...
Darn210 replied to Stubborn red head's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Whatever you do, don't stick it under the bed. Do you have a friend or neighbor or family member that will let you load up their fridge. Lots of people have the extra fridge in the basement or garage that usually holds the soda/beer. -
ARCHIVED How To Make The Wait Easier
Darn210 replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you need a diagnosis from the doctor, don't stop the gluten. If you've got a doctor (pediatrician or your initial "meh" GI) that will diagnose her based on the blood test alone then switch to gluten free. If you want to just go gluten free without a diagnosis, there is nothing stopping you. I will say this. I had a lot more "power" at my daughter... -
When my daughter was first diagnosed, I totally overcompensated with the treats. If the kids on her soccer team all got an oreo after the game, then she got a bowl of ice cream. If kids in her class got a handful of goldfish crackers, she got a bag of skittles. I didn't want her to feel deprived. As we progressed, the treats got a more appropriate in...

ARCHIVED Stomach's In Knots...
Darn210 replied to Stubborn red head's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What you have described sounds great for your husband. You know him best. If you had said he likes hunting and camping so I'm throwing him a party at the country club and there's going to be a champaign fountain and 200 guests and how am I going to trick him into wearing a tux . . . then I would have been worried. -
ARCHIVED Glutened - Help! Can't Deal With It!
Darn210 replied to Miserable29's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's worth trying the OTC meds that correspond with the different symptoms . . . like benedryl for the allergy-type symptoms, advil for joint pain, etc. Might not help, but it shouldn't hurt to try (as long as you are following dosing instructions and know it's gluten free). -

Well . . . if it was me experimenting like that . . . I think I would end up with a BIG hockey puck . . . perhaps a manhole cover. Me and any kind of bread "experiment" just doesn't work. Let us know how it turns out. -
ARCHIVED End Of Year Party At School
Darn210 replied to Polly's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It looks to me like you've covered it pretty well. I have to say that you'll learn from this experience what went well and what didn't and adjust your plan. Will you be "working" the party? That's the best way to see how it really goes. My daughter's school doesn't do anything quite as extensive as what this sounds like. They do have a cookie at both... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Gluten Free Breads, Bagels Etc Have To Be Frozen?
Darn210 replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The typical shelf life of gluten free foods is not as long as the gluten-filled foods. Plus, not as many people buy gluten free and the turnover at the grocery store can be unpredictable. In order to keep items in stock from going bad, they are often frozen. As far as the nonfrozen buns that you just bought, I would say that was because the store got... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Camp Counselor
Darn210 replied to Abby P's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Using your frozen pancakes: Cook frozen turkey sausage links in microwave and wrap in warmed up pancake . . . gives a sausage biscuit feel. My daughter used to take pancakes and spread half with peanut butter and half with nutella, fold together. She called them peanutbutternutellapancaketacos . . . yes, all one word. Muffins (homemade or Udis)... -
ARCHIVED Con Agra Response To gluten-free Inquiry

ARCHIVED Going Out For Ice Cream
Darn210 replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you can find a place that caters to you, then give them all your business. We used to go to a local Maggie Moo's. It's a bit pricey but they were fabulous. They would scoop with a clean scoop from a new unused container. Toppings came from the sealed containers in the back and not the open bins in the front. We tried to make a point of going...
