ARCHIVED 8 Year Old Daughter Taking A Trip With Her Dad
Darn210 replied to srall's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think this is important. Then your hubby will know exactly what to buy. I know my husband doesn't pay attention to that kind of detail. This is the same kind of info that I email ahead of time to my in-laws so that they can shop and have items already on hand before we get there. I would also give him a list of safe airport food just in case they... -
ARCHIVED Halloween Candy Hangover
Darn210 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We have a couple of local dentists that buy back candy (to get it out of the kid's hands mouths) at something like a dollar a pound. The fitness center where my husband works has a drop off your extra Halloween Candy drive for "Operation Gratitude". The candy is boxed up and sent to military personnel overseas. Google it for more info. Take a look... -
ARCHIVED Parties And Fruit Trays, Etc
Darn210 replied to samuella's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll give you my take on it... I honestly don't think my daughter would have a reaction if somebody put a "glutened" hand into a bag of chips and then she ate from the same bag. I don't think she would have a reaction if she wasn't the first one to help herself from a fruit tray and maybe there was a bread crumb on there. The hard part is getting a... -

Darn210 replied to alicewa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease

I would say that you are using the amount of caution that we practice at those kind of events. -
ARCHIVED Do You Keep Wheat Flour In Your Household?
Darn210 replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We are mixed household. The pantry is gluten free and there is a cabinet that contains the gluten packaged items such as bread, cereal, crackers, etc. We do not have wheat flour in the house. This includes gluten cookie, muffin, cake mixes as well. Have you seen how flour can poof and float when you pour it into a bowl or when you turn on your stand mixer... -

Might not be wallpaper . . . might be a curtain . . . which makes me think of Carol Burnett wearing the drapes in the Gone with the Wind parady. When I was looking for my first house in 1989, I saw a house with the turquoise brathroom fixtures and a house with burnt orange bathroom fixtures. The one that I actually bought had the avacado green kitchen... -

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Recipes
Darn210 replied to AMom2010's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We just make a crustless pumpkin pie using the directions on the back of the libby's can of pumpkin. I spray the pie pan with Pam before I put the filling in and bake per the directions. I made one crustless pumpkin pie a couple of years ago and the rest with gluten crusts and I had to fight the gluten eaters to stay away from my daughter's pie because... -
ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
Darn210 replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I really like your Peds Dr and am glad that you've got a plan of action. There is nothing worse than knowing something is wrong and nobody is listening and you don't know what to do. Good detective work at the school. I was going to suggest the same thing about being able to invite a (trustworthy) friend or two to eat with your son each day. That's... -

In the words of my good phrend PatTea . . . True Dat. Anybody else visualizing Al Bundy (Married with Children) with his hand stuck in his pants watching TV? -
This has been a big hit everywhere I've taken it: Buffalo Chicken Dip: 1 (10 ounce) can of chunk chicken (drained) 1 (8 ounce) package of cream cheese (softened) 1/2 cup Ranch dressing 1/3 cup pepper sauce (I use Frank's Red Hot) (adjust to your heat preference . . . we use a smidge more than this) 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese Heat chicken...

Can you do all the dishes except the ones the he eats off of? . . . let them pile up if he doesn't do his own? . . . then switch to paper plates if he runs you out of dishes and tell him if he would wash HIS dishes, you could save the money from eating off of paper products. Do you have an extra bathroom so that he can have (and clean) his own? I... -

There is no such thing as laundry being "finished" He would have a hard time with me . . . I hate housecleaning . . . have plenty of time to do it but don't. And now I have even MORE time. Before I was working a little . . . remember? Part time at a preschool? . . . as of a couple of weeks ago, I am there no longer. I slipped a disc and am now... -
ARCHIVED Help With Sauces & Gravies
Darn210 replied to waterlily-'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I know exactly what you are talking about . . . I call it gravy-jello I just use my standard gluten-free flour mix that I use in my baking and make gravy like I did before. Turns out fine. I think just about any gluten-free flour would work, you don't have to have a mix of flours since you are just using it for thickening. I use my mix just... -
My cheesey chicken casserole recipe calls for a can of cream of mushroom soup (I use Pacific Foods) and 8oz of shredded cheddar cheese. I think you could sub something like that for a can of cheddar chesse soup.

ARCHIVED Are There Celiacs That Don't Worry About Contaminated Kitchens?
Darn210 replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep!! In general, I only travel with a small nonstick skillet and spatula and the toaster bags and sometimes a collapsible strainer. The relatives know that I will come and scrub all their stainless steel pots/pans before I use them. I tend to use paper plates as my cutting board. If tupperware looks suspect (you know, some people will reheat in tupperware... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle Sleepovers?
Darn210 replied to smoky's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter's sleepovers tend to be last minute . . . the girls have been playing since two, decide they should have a sleep over, daughter comes home to eat supper and get her stuff and then goes back with snacks to share(usually microwave popcorn and fruit chews) and take safe cereal to have in the morning. If it was planned farther out and she was there...
