  1. Coconut milk or Vance's Dari Free (powder), two non dairy substitutes for dairy milk. Yogurt can be used (there are non dairy yogurts, too.) But just putting e.v. olive oil in a cruet, and sprinkling that in salads, then adding a squeeze of juice should work, then sprinkling with salt. (try pure apple cider vinegar, it may agree with you better than...
  2. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a little coconut oil or you could use a bit of Spectrum Shortening. Maybe add a little cocoa powder to thicken it up a bit. You could cut the recipe down to 1/4 of what it is, and try making a small batch to test the hypothesis. Reviewers will be standing by.
  3. However, this is the Wall Street Journal, which is going to be read by the general public interested in investment strategy. Having the general public think that a spokesperson for the "Gluten Intolerance Group of N. A." says that eating small amounts may be okay, is going to not only be extremely confusing, but misleading to people in the food industry...
  4. You may also have to start eating differently, more protein and more good FATS to provide the longer lasting fuel you need. Plus a multivitamin and mineral, gluten free, of course.
  5. Hi Melati, I did the Specific Carbohydrate Diet in the beginning, around 8 years ago, but I used it as a guide and did not follow all the "rules" strictly. At the time I avoided all dairy, even yogurt. This SCD diet was invented by a northern European lady who had great but sometimes eccentric ideas about foods, and I found some of the rules pretty contradictory...
  6. Why We Hate the Wall Street Journal: This is pretty good article (for them) until it gets to the very last quote, and then it totally blows it. The beginning - Okay, that's up near the top. Article quotes other well known celiac/gluten intolerant researchers. But then the dreadful finale - No, no, no, NO and no ! ...
  7. If you will have a microwave and a clean ceramic bowl or small individual sized baking ramekin, you can make all sorts of things in that. All you would have to do to get a fresh gluten free breakfast muffin or gluten free "bread" bun, is to pack up some pre measured ziplocks of the dry ingredients, and then add water and/or an egg, some oil and lemon juice...

ARCHIVED Dr Said Not To Eliminate Gluten

Is there any way to confirm this was, in fact, the doctor's advice ? If so, he needs to be turned into some sort of medical governing authority. Have you called his office and made an appointment to speak to him to see exactly what his advice actually is ? (excuse could be you have to babysit a celiac child and want to do what's right, etc) But what...
  9. I have been real hit and miss at times with things that I didn't make myself. Some things are okay and some are not. You could be reacting to cross contamination from something other than gluten, such as soy, in some products. Or to the "vegetable gum" or the guar gum or xanthan gums. I looked at a bunch of the Organ pre made item ingredients...
  10. Craving gluten is one of the signs of being cross contaminated with it. If you absolutely must have bread, bring your own gluten free version. I would also bring my own gluten free cupcake or brownie for the dessert part. The best thing to do if you are not at a restaurant that is safe to eat at, is to eat beforehand so you are not ravenously hungry...
  11. Who knows what that bag went thru before you purchased and opened it. You should try one of the bun- in- a- cup microwave variations for speed bread. That way you don't commit to making a big batch and then discovering that you don't care for something in it. This is how I narrowed it down to it was flax that really does not taste good at all to me...
  12. Some people such as myself, instead of getting "sick" per se with gut problems, get neurological symptoms mimicing MS. My eyes will have more trouble tracking together and my sense of balance goes off. Years before this, I had a continuous series of buzzing/numbness in my muscles in my upper arms/shoulders and numbness in my hands and feet, plus muscle...
  13. Deb Wheaton, the mother of Wil Wheaton, the actor (Star Trek, NG) and his sister, Amy, have it. her blog was mentioned here this week via Wil's blog Open Original Shared Link Keith Olberman was on MSNBC, he currently can be found on Twitter and the blogs during his hiatus until his new gig starts at Current TV.
  14. Maybe try a henna design first, will last weeks and if you don't like it afterall, it's going to wear off.
  15. Check his medications. Doctors love to put old(er) people on many different medications automatically. Increasingly it seems it's a problem to get pharma manufacturers to disclose the ingredients of the binders, fillers, etc of those prescriptions as to gluten free status. NEVER assume, manufacturers can change this at will. Also, many prescriptions...
  16. It's not easy training one's self to be in a state of hyper paranoia about labeling. It's not stupidity.
  17. You can feed your pets wheat free and gluten free foods. I ended up with two dogs adopted from the pound at different times who are both allergic/reactive to wheat, so we feed all the pets wheat free pet foods to prevent them getting cross contaminated from one dog or cat drinking out of the other's water dish. We also have one horse who has the rye,...
  18. "Bisquick" is not gluten free baking. It's just rice flour and sugar in a box, with some recipes on the side. It violates the gluten free "Rule of Three" - a baked good should contain at least 3 gluten free ingredients to have a prayer of tasting halfway decent. Try Bette Hagman's Yogurt Quick Bread recipe variations, for example. There is both...
  19. Q. why are the slices sized like I would expect to be seen in a ladies tea-room for finger sandwiches? A. They are for ornamental purposes. Q. Is it possible to make bread yourself at home that tastes real,......or at least better than this garbage I have tried to date, and can you make a normal sized slice with it? A. Tastes real...
  20. Hamilton Beach. I was in the store several years ago, and some women came in the toaster oven area and were discussing all the brands that had flunked out on them one by one, after a year, and finally the one woman says, get that one, I've had it and it lasts. At that point I'm all ears, and ask which one they are referring to, and it was that one...
  21. You mean you actually ate it? No, no, no. Like performance art. You purchase it, and store it in the freezer. Open the door up once in a while, and look at it. Styrofoam with freezer burn, motivation wrapped in plastic. Close the door. Feel grateful.
  22. Typical American female diet is low fat high carb. A roller coaster of eating things that quickly break down into sugars, and then running out of fuel again. Try eating more "good fats" such as coconut milk, coconut oil, avocado, olive oil, nuts. Put some mayo on things, for a treat. Cheese if you can tolerate it. More protein, more vegetables. ...
  23. Did he say that he is encouraging you to go on a gluten free diet now, or wait until a biopsy is done ? Because if he's going to send to a gastro doc for a biopsy, they will want you still eating the gluten until that is done. However, if you are supposed to just change over, welcome. You are supposed to avoid the proteins in wheat, rye, and barley...
  24. If you are sharing teflon pans with gluten bearing foods, you have a problem. Ditto metal pans with old, baked on residue, or rubber spatulas, tupperware storage containers, wooden cutting boards, rolling pins, etc. Cast iron pans you are using for gluten free need to be dedicated, also. I am more fussy than some, and if it is a condiment, in my refrigerator...
  25. Is that him in the picture ? Irish warriors are not meant to eat Roman grains.
