ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
No offense! I know what you mean by the language of the book, it can be a little off-putting. But I have seen quite a lot of comments about SCD and I just get so cross when I see others who kick at the goads of the diet. They are so indoctrinated and addicted to carbs that the word 'restriction' becomes a swear word and the thought of having to do without... -
ARCHIVED I Need Advice
AliB replied to Gentleheart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would agree with Laura generally. In order to get a diagnosis you likely will need to introduce gluten again for a few months. You didn't say if you were avoiding anything other than gluten, but it would seem likely, as your symptoms have not improved after so long that you may well be intolerant of other foods, not just gluten. You cannot assume that... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What's cult-like? Not eating like all the other 'mugs' who are all consuming copious quantities of gluten-based and sugar loaded carbs in general and dairy and soy and...and...and. I keep thinking that if I lived somewhere they had never heard of a brownie or a bagel or any of this stuff, my diet would ordinarily be one that we would consider 'cult-like... -
ARCHIVED What Causes Abdominal Bloating?
AliB replied to nikki2008's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I stopped gluten I also stopped dairy, most carbs and sugar. Within 5 hours the pain had gone, within a week the bloating and discomfort had gone. If Candida/yeast is a problem, the yeasts use the carbs we eat as foods, especially the di- (lactose and sugar) and poly-saccharides (grains and starches), as damage to the gut usually means that we are... -
ARCHIVED Son Just Diagnosed - Alternative Treatments?
AliB replied to KimS's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have been following the Specific Carbohydrate diet. It is based on a very simple way of eating but has had great success for many different health problems but Stomach and Bowel disorders feature high on that list. It is somewhat challenging but it does seem to work. It has really helped my gut heal and I can now tolerate some foods that I couldn't... -
The fact that you haven't really recovered after going gluten-free may suggest that some other food or foods could also be preventing your recovery. Those who are gluten-intolerant often also have problems with other things like dairy, corn, soy, etc. If the other foods are preventing recovery and still making you feel ill they could also be masking any...

I know how you feel. My stomach wouldn't let me eat a lot of those things so I had to really go basic. As it has started to heal, I have been introducing a few things back in and I am now putting on weight at a lb a day and I can't afford to do that! I had lost 2 stone prior to the gluten-free and have now put half a stone back on and I just don't want...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The trouble with bacteria is that it grows. The more we eat foods that feed it, the more it grows so although some of these Candida remedies might work initially, if we keep eating loads of sugar and carbs it will all come back again. It is a normal part of gut flora, it only gets out of control when we allow it to by overfeeding both it and ourselves with... -
A friend in the village has Fibro., as does my husband. I went to see my friend after I stopped gluten as I had seen people's comments on the forum that their Fibro got better when they went gluten-free. She said that interestingly, she actually went gluten-free for a three month period back last year and her Fibro was so much better. Unfortunately she...

ARCHIVED Doctor Visit Today - Answers!
AliB replied to Joni63's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The lack of iron could cause tinnitus and RLS, but the RLS is probably due to the fact that iron can cause constipation. RLS is usually triggered by problems in the bowel, whether it be constipation or diarrhea - if the bowel is under duress the nerves that run down the spine by the bowel into the legs and feet are affected and trigger the RLS. Since... -
ARCHIVED Non Dh Itching - What's Most Likely Culprit?
AliB replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are carb intolerant as opposed to just gluten, then you will eventually manifest intolerances to other carbs. any one of them could be an antagonist. Other things are possible too, due to gut permeability. Tomatoes, which are of the nightshade family are often implicated in allergies or allergic type responses. You might have to do an elimination... -
Those who are gluten intolerant as opposed to those who are Celiac become intolerant because of the sheer quantity of the stuff they are constantly exposed to. It can happen that we can become intolerant of other foods if we eat them continuously so it is better to rotate them if you can. Maybe try rice for a couple of days then swap to corn, then to...

For goodness sake don't get them removed. The tonsils are a window to the health of the body and if inflamed or exuding a deposit that is a clear sign that your body is not right and is struggling to cope. Get the body right and the tonsil problem will clear up! If they are not there, your body has one less way of getting rid of rubbish. The Medical Profession...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Don't know about chocolate. She doesn't seem to be very clear on why it is bad, just that Dr Haas said so! I'm afraid I cheat on that one - I have a square or two of very dark plain choc most evenings (Slap! Ow!). I found some 81% and figured that because it has so much cocoa solids it must have a lot less sugar! I'm probably not helping myself, but it... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal Fatigue - How Long Does It Last?
AliB replied to WriterCat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cor. Wish I could. Mine seems to be going the other way! I hoped I would start to lose some after 2 months. If I go without carbs I can just about maintain it but I only have to sniff a carb and up it goes! I guess we can't have it all! I have a bit more energy but no weight loss. You have weight loss but no more energy. Sigh. -
ARCHIVED How Can I Show That I Take Notice
AliB replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's a difficult one 'cos you obviously can't just barge in. There maybe no false positives, but there are false negatives and if her blood tests happen to come back negative, the possibility that she may be Coeliac might just be dismissed. So many doctors just seem to automatically discount it if the tests are negative. Another options would be... -
You can add me to this one, too! I really thought that once I had dropped gluten my body would start to sort itself out and I would lose weight. Yeah, in my dreams. I've always had a problem with carbs but now I only have to look at the stuff and I put on yet another lb! What the heck is going on here?!! Before gluten-free I had lost nearly 3 stone...

Hi Gretchen. Just out of interest I have noticed this same situation happening quite regularly. There are often posts from people who have recovered somewhat after stopping Gluten, only to go backwards again after a short while. It would be good to get it checked out, but it might also be worth considering that your husband may actually, like me, be...

ARCHIVED Frustrated And In Denial
AliB replied to lmtnarny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't fully understand the insurance thing as I live in the UK and we have a different system, but from odd posts I have read it seems that some who are gluten intolerant don't want a definitive diagnosis as it may affect their premiums and could impact on any other insurance need in the future. I may not be right on this one, but I am sure there are... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It would undoubtedly collapse - but it's doing a good job of achieving that anyway! I just can't help but look at those communities that don't eat much, if any, grains (or sugar). Generally they are all fit and relatively healthy compared to those that do! We had a TV program here where 2 doctors (twins) went to visit different communities around the... -
ARCHIVED Background Body Throbbing/ Heart Pounding

I have been taking some extra magnesium but have not been very regular with it. I'll try and take it every day and see if that helps. Thanks Laura. The morning after the night before - I think it was a little better after the nettle tea but will have to be a bit more regular with that one too before I can draw any conclusion about that one. I had a... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Myathenia Gravis
AliB replied to Noel1965's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Did you only drop gluten, or did you drop other foods also? I'm asking that because I am wondering if, due to the fact you haven't seen any improvement, whether other foods have been preventing your gut from healing. Many diagnosed with Celiac also find that they have issues with other foods, commonly soy, corn and dairy, but anything can be an antagonist... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Pele. Welcome to the thread. Like you I find it a little annoying sometimes that Elaine G has stated that a certain food is 'illegal' but doesn't say why. I like to know 'why'! This a little bit posted by another user on here on Soy - "NO CELIACS CAN HAVE SOY. It contains prolamine which your liver will think is gluten because it's extremely similar... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Figuring Out What Is Going On With My Sleep
AliB replied to Sarah8793's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Is there anything you have every day that might be triggering a digestive disturbance? I have had palpitations when my digestion was struggling for any reason. During the night your body sorts itself out. The liver is going through a detoxification process and may be struggling with some other food that you are eating, something else you perhaps have... -
ARCHIVED Background Body Throbbing/ Heart Pounding
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's funny Nancy - when I first noticed the pounding I always thought it was to do with my blood sugar and carbs - back then my sugar levels were commonly 250 or more, but over the last few months I have been taking an herbal supplement that has brought my sugars right down to around normal level so I don't get the high ones that I used to, yet I'm still...
