I haven't read all the replies yet, but I read enough to see that a lot of people aren't really understanding the extent of your restrictions. This isn't going to help with the short-term, but I would recommend you start socking away money when you can, and purchase a freeze dryer when you're able to do so. That way you can prepare the foods that...

Barley in gluten free cheerios?
brigala replied to Shalome's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While I've never gotten sick from Cheerios, I choose not to eat them (well, maybe a little bit rarely). I do, however, allow them in my home for the non-Celiac family members to eat. I don't eat much cereal anyway, but I don't allow any non-gluten-free cereal in my house. I don't feel comfortable enough with their sorting protocol to make them a regular... -
I had my son tested back in 2009, primarily as a response to his declaration that "I'm never eating gluten again." He was 14 at the time. We had been eating gluten-free at home for a couple of years already due to my extreme gluten sensitivity (I never was tested for Celiac, although my doctor is convinced I have it), and he had trialed a gluten free diet...

ARCHIVED Rice Dream New Label "gluten Free"
brigala replied to gffamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, another year has gone by... did you ever get a response? I'd be interested in knowing whether they're continuing this practice of including a barley-derived ingredient in their products which are labeled "gluten free." Even though the resulting product has a low level of gluten that most people probably won't notice a reaction to, I still feel... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Issues With Trader Joe's Labeling?
brigala replied to TGK112's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm more comfortable buying TJ's stuff than things made from random companies where I don't know what their manufacturing practices are like. At least I know TJ's has policies in place requiring their manufacturers to use safe allergen-handling practices. Of course there's no way to know how well those policies are actually applied. I figure every time... -
Last time we went to Disney, my younger son decided the night before we went that he was "never eating gluten again." Our home had already been gluten free for a couple of years, and he was starting to suspect he had an intolerance and it was confirmed the first couple days of our vacation when he was out eating "normal" food. He was really depressed about...

I don't think it's very common for there to be gluten in laundry detergent. Shampoo and soaps are another matter - I bring my own. I look for hotels with kitchens, or vacation condos. I am not comfortable eating out very much unless it's at a dedicated gluten-free restaurant. I bring a roll of tin foil and line any baking sheets or whatnot before...

ARCHIVED Three Part Lasagna Pan
brigala replied to langone7's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What a neat idea! I don't make lasagna because the kids hate ricotta. Yeah, I know. They're weird. With a pan like that I could totally just leave the ricotta out of one section. I would not put gluten noodles in any section, though. We keep our whole kitchen gluten free for the two of us who need to be gluten-free. Even if I lived with a mixed kitchen... -
ARCHIVED Homemade Chocolate
brigala replied to Pauliewog's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I thought all the Lindt brand chocolate had barley malt in it. I know all their chocolate truffles do. I don't suppose your store in Japan carries the Open Original Shared Link brand chocolate. Guittard products are all made in a gluten free facility. They make mostly baking chips but they're quite good. I had a small handful of giant milk chocolate... -
I read on another site that they are considering dropping their gluten-free menu and anti-cross-contamination kitchen policies. They have chosen a location in Destin, FL to test market the change, and they no longer offer specific gluten free options though they'll try to accommodate individual requests as they come in. I don't live near a CiP but I...

Last time I went to my Chipotle, when I told them we had a "gluten allergy" the first person in line called down to the rest of the staff. As soon as the order ahead of us had cleared the line, All of them, like in unison, changed their gloves and got towels out to wipe down the prep counter. The person at the front wiped down the tortilla warmer. Then they...

ARCHIVED A Reward Of Gluten And Lactose
brigala replied to kvanrens1's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So it's been a few days. How is she feeling? This is a difficult parenting decision, and obviously different people will have different opinions on it. There does come a point where the child will have to self-monitor and a parent cannot physically force the child to adhere to the dietary restrictions. At what point do you come right out and say "It's... -
ARCHIVED Is Corned Beef Gluten Free?
brigala replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can also make your own corned beef. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
brigala replied to xMichellex's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm really angry about the fact that they will label their stuff gluten-free when they know darn well it contains gluten -- even if it is only "trace" amounts. I won't buy anything at all made from that company because I don't trust their labeling practices. It's sad, because the only non-dairy "milk chocolate" I can find is put out by the makers of... -
Bumping this old thread... any new or updated info on gluten-free dining (or shopping) in Kauai? Our family is going there in April. We've got one gluten-free (me), one gluten-free/CF (younger son) and one allergic to pineapple! (older son). I feel so sorry for him not being able to eat pineapple in Hawaii...

ARCHIVED Celiac Being "over Diagnosed" According To My Gyn
brigala replied to SaraKat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I had my diagnosis of IBS in approximately 2001, it was with nothing more than a digital rectal exam and asking about my symptoms done by a nurse practitioner. No further tests were ordered. No course of action was suggested. No medication was prescribed. I was told it was IBS and I was just going to have to live with it and try to avoid foods that made... -
ARCHIVED Undiagnosed W A Difficult Dr- Help!
brigala replied to beccathorn's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Check back with the "Alternative Specialist" and see what he put in your medical records. You may HAVE a diagnosis of gluten intolerance. That's no guarantee that your other doctors will accept it, but that's true no matter who does the diagnosis. I don't have a diagnosis, since I went gluten-free sort of by accident before I ever sought a diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED When Friends Cook For You
brigala replied to SuperMolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I will occasionally taste something a well-meaning friend gives me, but I won't take more than a bite. And even then, it has to be a friend who knows more than the average guy on the street. I consider eating at a friend's house to be similar to eating at a restaurant, except most of my friends aren't trained like chefs are in food preparation and allergen... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pasta
brigala replied to Mj-Toronto's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy the Sam's Mills corn-based pasta from Amazon. It is by far the most economical gluten-free pasta on the market. I also use rice pasta from Trader Joe's but I have found that I can't get the spaghetti to cook up right at all; I stick to the spirals and macaroni-type shapes. I'm always watching for sales on Amazon and buy enough to last me several... -
ARCHIVED Regret Being Gluten Free?
brigala replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just want to say quickly that although, at first, my glutening reactions were worse than the symptoms I'd had before going gluten-free, over time as I got better and had fewer and fewer "accidents" the accidents I do have have been more mild. I was glutened at a restaurant the other day (even after carefully talking to the server etc. etc. etc.) and by... -
ARCHIVED Thinking About Another Pregnancy
brigala replied to Healthy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That varies a LOT by state. My VBAC was delivered by a midwife in a hospital. Kaiser hospital has me seeing a midwife also, and if I deliver in the hospital it will be with a midwife unless I have a complication and need another c-section for some reason. In Oregon, Breech, twins, or VBACs after 2 or more cesareans can't be delivered by midwives in out-of... -
ARCHIVED After 8 Ivfs And 4 M/Cs- Finally Dx With Celiac!
brigala replied to Sunshine24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ditto. If you were going to be the carrier, I would definitely wait at least 6 months. Make sure your doctor knows about the surrogate and see if that changes the recommendation. Best of luck. I don't think our infertility was caused at all by my Celiac (my husband had severe sperm problems) but it took us seven years and now I'm finally pregnant with... -
We had a very successful trip to Disneyland! My son decided to swear of gluten for life while we were on vacation, so we ended up with both of us eating gluten-free at Disneyland. We had bacon burgers with gluten-free buns that were actually good! Be aware that the gluten-free pizzas are basically personal-size pizzas. They're pretty reasonably...

ARCHIVED Thinking About Another Pregnancy
brigala replied to Healthy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Try looking into Naturopathic doctors who double as midwives. You can still see an OB if you feel you need to, or if you must in order to deliver in a hospital (if that's what you want) but a ND who is also a midwife should be much more informed on nutrition and pregnancy, and NDs tend to be more understanding of food sensitivities and Celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone See This?
brigala replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I saw this in a different forum. I don't really know what to think of it. It's unimaginable. Part of me thinks it must be a hoax. Nobody would do something like this, right? But then I went to his website and saw that he's selling "chocolates" that nobody would know were sugar-free, which do not raise the blood sugar in diabetics (even if eaten in large...
