  1. For someone who says that they have had social problems, you sound highly competent socially. It sounds like it is your friend with the problem. Sometimes, I find it easier to just say that I already ate, or I'm not hungry. Eventually more involved explanation may be necessary. I think that explaining that you might be made very sick should be more than...
  2. I can really relate to feeling terribly sick and not having a clear mind to be able to deal with it all. Things are so much better now. Try to make good decisions and feel confident that things will improve. Find some good doctors to help. It will be a challenge that you can handle.
  3. It looks like here in New York, colleges do not accept online diplomas. The ones I called did not. At least his administrators are not as bad as these ones who gave parents of a dying child in a coma in hospice care grief over not taking standardized tests: Open Original Shared Link
  4. I do think that something as sticky as figs are likely to contain some cross contamination from whatever was in the facility where they were packaged. I personally think that I may have over restricted my diet choices by jumping to conclusions too quickly. I was trying to help you not do the same thing. I didn't mean to sound like another one doubting...
  5. Grain free is exactly what we did to achieve his present symptom free state. I got him out of there today. We have several options to explore and I have several appointments scheduled in the next week or so. I am confident that we will figure out a good solution and that we did the right thing. I think that the school was just trying to get him set...
  6. I didn't mean eating fresh figs, I meant letting them dry and comparing the appearance.
  7. I hope that you feel better soon. Some celiacs are sensitive to lower levels of gluten contamination that others. That a possibility for you to discuss with your doctors. Here is a research study about that. Open Original Shared Link
  8. There is still a lot of hope for growth for your daughter. My daughter was diagnosed at age and she did a lot of maturing and growing after that. Don't give up hope yet.
  9. I hope that more doctors are taught so that they will stop dismissing the concerns of their patients. I was told a story last night of a young woman who had gone to doctors several times with stomach pain and diarrhea and was told that her symptoms were psychosomatic. She later died of colon cancer at age 32. It's sad.
  10. He hasn't been seen by anyone for mental health issues since that 5th grade social worker. Perhaps they think that he should be. I think it is mainly that they want to get a system in place where he attend full time. They need funding to afford to give him an education. They don't get paid when he isn't there. The problem is that when he is sick, his...
  11. I am sorry that you were made sick. Perhaps assuming a dusting with flour is an overreaction. I've done that sort of thing myself plenty, and I'm trying not to do it anymore. We have a fig tree and our figs get that same appearance when they dry. Try buying some fresh ones and allowing them to dry and see what happens.
  12. That has occurred to me. In 5th grade when he first fell ill he was taken to the school social worker without my permission. He was throwing up every morning before school and instead of celiac disease, they assumed anxiety. When I found out, I put a stop to it. Interesting that they would put more confidence into the diagnosis of a social worker than...
  13. His school doesn't have an online program. We have spent some time negociating. I see now that it isn't a problem with the diagnosis. They don't believe that the symptoms are enough of a reason to miss school. His brain fog is so severe that he can't complete homework or learn anything, but they don't understand that. He is a diligent student and would...
  14. Nope, they say they have to have carte blanche.
  15. They didn't get many people in the study. 13 people had 10 mg per day and 13 has 50 mg per day. Of the ones taking 10 mg per day, one had a full relapse. Does this rationalize the ppm limits for gluten-free food?
  16. This is a research paper on how much gluten celiacs can tolerate. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/85/1/160.full.pdf+html They conclude that 10 mg per day can be tolerated by most celiacs and that the diet should be kept at below 50 mg per day. This is the accepted science at this point. I personally don't agree with it.
  17. Thanks to all who gave helpful comments. This is going to be difficult.
  18. I hope that someone will be able to offer some good advice here. My son is a junior in high school. We have had all sorts of problems with his diet. He can get sick even from gluten-free certified foods, so that the only way to figure out if he will be made sick by a food is for him to eat it and see. When glutened, he has terrible brain fog and goes...
  19. Here is another reference: Open Original Shared Link This source is a medical writer, and not a doctor. I was not able to aquire the sources that she referenced. Here is what nutritionist Tricia Thompson says: Open Original Shared Link Is it too late to reintroduce breastfeeding?
  20. I had problems with season mixes. At that time, I was also having problems with other processed foods that didn't contain MSG. At the time I thought that the only common possibility was trace gluten contamination. Looking back, I can see that it is possible that I was reacting to MSG. This source: Open Original Shared Link says that foods that commonly...
  21. I have not experienced this and would second the recommendation to go to the doctor or even the emergency room. I usually notice an improvement within 24 hours of removing the source of gluten contamination.
  22. I agree with the porriage as the first thing to try. Also the bacon. If you try those things and still have problems I have suggestion for where to go next. Look at this paper for people with continuing symptoms on the gluten-free diet and try their approach. Open Original Shared Link My son and I seem to need to take it one step further and avoid...
  23. I agree Irishheart. When you are still healing it seems like all sorts of things contain gluten when they may be bothering you for other reasons. I think that it is a good idea to avoid all the sources that you can come up with until you heal and then you can see what you can tolerate and what you can't. I hope that the people in your life can be agreeable...
  24. I would use separate dishes too. I just think that when you look at the facts it seems like the likely source is elsewhere. It may not be enough to use separate dishes. I would like to hear back from the IP when/if she finds out.
  25. Regular bread contains 124,000 ppm gluten. Open Original Shared Link It is a strange comparison to make with whatever amount of beer is left in someone's mouth after swallowing it when the regular beer only contains 20-100 ppm gluten to begin with.
