				ARCHIVED Month-Long Reaction?
dilettantesteph replied to jherring's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know what you mean. I hope that you notice an improvement soon so it won't be necessary. -

ARCHIVED Mom Never Told Me I Was A Sick Baby...
dilettantesteph replied to beachbirdie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My mother told me that I was a terrible baby. It kind of hurt my feelings. Maybe that's why your mother didn't say anything. It isn't really a nice thing to tell your child. She told me that all I did was cry and it drove her crazy. She had my two brothers to care for too. It must have been very hard. I also have dental defects and missed a lot of... -

ARCHIVED Doc Said I Was Super Sensitive
dilettantesteph replied to GFreeMO's topic in Super Sensitive People
I eat mainly from the garden. Real food starts to taste a lot better after awhile. You learn to cook better too. You can do it. It helps to make extra so that you can reheat, though at this point I mainly cook fresh because it tastes so much better. You can grow herbs in pots in a sunny window and they add a lot of flavor. My teenage son eats this way... -

				ARCHIVED Month-Long Reaction?
dilettantesteph replied to jherring's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have had reactions that last that long too, but that doesn't mean that it isn't something else, or even something in your diet currently. It wouldn't hurt to look over your diet carefully and eliminate anything new for now. You could add those things back again when you are better. It also wouldn't hurt to pay your doctor a visit. I would hope that... -

ARCHIVED Increased Sensitivity 11 Weeks In?
dilettantesteph replied to KikiB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
At first I felt 100% better just eliminating bread and cereal. Then I had to learn how to read labels carefully. Then I had to go for certified gluten free only. Then I went for dedicated facilities and tested to under 5 ppm. Then I went to mainly unprocessed foods. Now I am mainly unprocessed and grow as much of my own as possible. It doesn't do... -

				ARCHIVED Need College Kitchen
dilettantesteph replied to patz16's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My daughter is at McGill university. They agreed to give her an individual apartment in a dorm setting with her own kitchen with a doctor's note. She decided to stay off campus anyway. She found an apartment which was a better deal than the dorms, but she regrets it now as she had a lonely first semester. She has made more friends now and should be O... -

ARCHIVED Doc Said I Was Super Sensitive
dilettantesteph replied to GFreeMO's topic in Super Sensitive People
Congratulations to your GI for being so well informed. It was a GI in my group who told me too, back more than 5 years ago. Back then there didn't seem to be hardly any awareness of this condition. I'm really glad to see it becoming more well known. Congratulations to those on this forum for helping with that. Still, I read all the time about people... -
If you need a gluten free home you may need dedicated facilities too. It all depends on your level of sensitivity. It varies a lot. It is really easy for those who have a higher level to think that those of us with a lower level take things too far. I would probably be the same way myself. The only way to find out seems to be trial and error.

ARCHIVED I Think Celiac Testing Is Flawed
dilettantesteph replied to Seeking2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This source says "We also observed significant cross-reactivity between a-gliadin 33-mer and various food antigens, but some of these reactions were associated with the contamination of non-gluten foods with traces of gluten." It could be from cross reactivity or contamination. In my experience, I don't react to things when I grow them myself, even... -

				ARCHIVED Still In Pain
dilettantesteph replied to Chloe Miller's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You could try to keep a food/symptom journal. You may be able to link those pains with something that you are eating. It could be a certain brand or restaurant meal that has cc, or it could be another food intolerance. It works best if you can keep you diet simple with only one change per week. Produce and plain meats make this process of figuring things... -

ARCHIVED I Think Celiac Testing Is Flawed
dilettantesteph replied to Seeking2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think that it is flawed so much as there isn't enough known yet. They are researching and trying to figure it out as fast as they can with all the difficulties involved. Here is an article about the difficulties with funding with medical research: Open Original Shared Link -

ARCHIVED Increased Sensitivity 11 Weeks In?
dilettantesteph replied to KikiB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I steadily became more and more sensitive as I went along. So did my son. My husband did not. We all differ. In the end you will feel so much better that it will all be worth it. I was amazed at all the issues that went away. -

ARCHIVED How Not To Buy Cross Contaminated Items
dilettantesteph replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Super Sensitive People
I did come across a garden blog of someone in Wyoming who harvests vegetables all winter from unheated tunnels. I can't find it now since the forum where I posted it is down. I can't remember where in Wyoming, but it looks like zone 2 or 3. Reading that is what gave me the courage to try it here. -

ARCHIVED How Not To Buy Cross Contaminated Items
dilettantesteph replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Super Sensitive People
Just let me warn you that it mainly winter harvesting, not winter gardening. Things don't grow much when it's cold and the days are short. They more keep in the ground outside. You need to start things at the end of the summer. Of course, that depends on your climate. I'm in zone 6. Look for books by Elliot Coleman. He is the winter gardening expert... -

ARCHIVED How Not To Buy Cross Contaminated Items
dilettantesteph replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Super Sensitive People
Since you posted this in the super sensitive section, I will make the assumption that you are super sensitive I am also super sensitive. I don't spend very much time calling people. I have had bad experiences with that. For instance, I did call a company after finding a gluten grain in their whole grain sorghum. They told me about all their efforts to... -

				ARCHIVED Aaaagghhh... Ginger Ale?
dilettantesteph replied to Em314's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just be sure to keep track of this. I had problems with all sorts of things, including some sodas. If I hadn't kept track I wouldn't have been able to get healthy. Sometimes you think that you will remember and you don't. Good for you for noticing promptly and figuring it out. -

ARCHIVED Reaction Time To Accidental Glutenings
dilettantesteph replied to marie75's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My most obvious symptoms come the next day. Sometimes I get symptoms the same day, but then again sometimes I think I do and then the next day I'm fine. It takes two days for my son. With smaller amounts, I find that it can take a few days to build up and I might not notice until I've had something for several days. I try not to add new things more than... -

ARCHIVED Intense Exercise : Good Idea Or Not For Us Celiacs?
dilettantesteph replied to zamm0's topic in Sports and Fitness
On the gluten free diet, celiacs should be as healthy as anyone else. There are Olympic and professional athletes with celiac disease. I see no reason to let it limit what you can do. -

ARCHIVED So Frustrated... Daughter Keeps Getting Glutened.
dilettantesteph replied to Mom2-2girls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You might want to skip the restaurant meals until things calm down. It is just one more variable when things are already hard to figure out. It can take some time to get used to everything. Be patient. It is easy to get overwhelmed. It hard to feel responsible when your child gets ill. You can only do your best. Forgive yourself your mistakes. Different... -

ARCHIVED Homemade Chicken Broth Making Me Sick?
dilettantesteph replied to JoyMurphy's topic in Super Sensitive People
I have problems with chicken in general. I am sensitive to very low levels of gluten. I did find a source for while which was pasture fed which I could eat with abandon. They were the only thing processed in the facility. I don't think that the gluten gets into the meat from the chickens eating it. I saw a video on youtube of a chicken processing facility... -
Since you are just starting out, it might just take some time. It can also take some time to learn all the ins and outs of the diet. In a shared household there are precautions that you can take with separate counters, toasters, certain dishes like colanders, etc. How careful are other family members about gluten crumbs? We tried everything for a year...

ARCHIVED Very Nervous About Trying To Get Pregnant
dilettantesteph replied to OleMissLass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had my children at age 35 and 37, before my diagnosis. I had already started having uncontrolled diarrhea before I got pregnant with the first one so I was pretty ill already. I think that the pregnancies and nursing may have caused some of the symptoms to improve. My message is that even untreated, I managed to have two healthy pregnancies and produced...
