I don't take very many. I found it helpful to keep them to as few ingredients as possible, and to take them in as concentrated a form as possible so that there was less filler to worry about. I found it helpful to do elimination/challenge diets on my supplements. I would stop taking one for a week and then start taking it again without changing anything...

From what I know, refractory celiac is when you don't respond to the gluten free diet. My GI doc thinks that in most cases it is because you are reacting to trace gluten. I see that you say that isn't the case for you. I hope that your doctor finds some treatable condition and that you can get better. I can tell you that there are foods in your diet which...

ARCHIVED Very Upset.. Told Blood Tests Are 90% Accurate! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to lmc22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the blood tests are 90% accurate, that means that 10% of the time they are not accurate. You could be one of the 10%. -
I don't have any scientific evidence that there is gluten in eggs. I only have my own experiences and those of my children which are subjective. It isn't easy finding chickens that aren't fed supplemental grain here either, especially in the winter. I live in the northern part of the country. I had eliminated eggs from the grocery store as I felt better...

				ARCHIVED Losing Weight And Frustrated
dilettantesteph replied to Macmuireadhaigh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son and I both lose weight every time we have problems with one or more of our foods bothering us. We have to do diet challenge/elimination studies to figure out what it is. We both get pretty obvious symptoms so that helps figure it out. Then we consume like crazy to get the weight back up again. Whole milk and whole milk yogurt helps a lot. I've... -

ARCHIVED 13 Year Old Sick All The Time :(
dilettantesteph replied to audrey d's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In my area you can get fresh produce really cheap at the farmer's markets. I don't know how those guys make a living. It might help for you to keep a gluten free household. Other members of the family can still eat gluten outside the house, but it will cut down on cross contamination possibilities in the house. That helped us. -

ARCHIVED Confused About Reaction To Oats
dilettantesteph replied to Raywuwei's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I hadn't really thought about oat use not being disclosed on the label. Maybe that could explain some of my reactions to processed foods. I react to oats too. Do you remember what brand that was? -
If smoothies work, how about pureed vegetable soups? They can be more like a liquid than a solid. You could drink them from a cup. You can get your nutrition from fruit smoothies and vegetable soups to start with. Meanwhile you can work on adding small amounts of more solid food, and work your way up. I wish you well.

ARCHIVED Are You Super-Careful About Possible Cc In Packaged Foods
dilettantesteph replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am a super sensitive celiac and I have to be super careful to not be ill. If I were not symptomatic, I would not be super careful. The chances of minor cross contamination causing harm in someone who is not symptomatic seem low to me. All the studies that I have read where harm was caused were with celiacs on a regular gluten containing diet. -
I've been recommending this to my daughter, who is less sensitive than I am. I thought it was fairly safe. I think that I have reacted to it periodically, but that it was mainly good. I hope that you find out that it was something else. Can you please let me know? I generally stick to the groats because then I can see if there is something in there that...

ARCHIVED Frustrated And Ready To Cry!
dilettantesteph replied to DavinaRN's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My husband hasn't been as supportive as I would like either. At first he was almost combative not wanting to believe the doctors. Somehow he thought that he knew better than they did. He has come around a bit five years later. We do need to appreciate that this is hard on our loved ones too, though in a different way. He will still make appreciative... -

ARCHIVED Easy/processed Meat For Super Sensitive?
dilettantesteph replied to aquaholical's topic in Super Sensitive People
I am sensitive to low levels of gluten and the meat which I had the best luck with was pork tenderloin. You just take it out of the package and put it in the oven for the right amount of time. I got stuff packed at the meat processor in the absence of any gluten containing products. I asked. -

ARCHIVED Other Types Of Natural Chemicals In Food
dilettantesteph replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Have you tried different sources of the same thing? That might be helpful to see if you are reacting to the item itself, or something used in it's growth, harvesting or processing. I found that to be the case for me. I was fine with things from some sources but not others. That lead me to be able to find safe sources of some things that I can eat, rather... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Feel Like They Were Trained To Ignore Their Body?
dilettantesteph replied to megsybeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So true. -
I think that it is auto immune and not malabsorption since the symptoms come on quickly upon accidental ingestion of gluten.

ARCHIVED Girlfriend Making Me Sick And Dont Know Why
dilettantesteph replied to deals88's topic in Super Sensitive People
All Dove products are not gluten free. What they are is a Unilever product, and they state that they will give the origin of ingredients. For instance some Dove shampoo's will state hydrolysed wheat protein as an ingredient. Open Original Shared Link Hydrolyzed wheat protein is an ingredient in at least one: Open Original Shared Link -

ARCHIVED Girlfriend Making Me Sick And Dont Know Why
dilettantesteph replied to deals88's topic in Super Sensitive People
I have had this problem with my husband. Good luck getting through it. It can certainly cause problems with the relationship. Since my son also has celiac disease, my husband finally got tested a few years after our diagnoses. He found out that he had it too and things got better when he was also gluten free. I think it must have been that the tooth... -

ARCHIVED How Long Does Healing Take! So Frustrated!
dilettantesteph replied to Maryw88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It took me about 4 years to heal/develop my diet. I don't know if I would have healed faster if I had gone on the diet I am now on right away. I do know that if I go back to eating some of the things I used to eat, I get sick again. Periodically I'll try one of them just in case. I just kept reading and informing myself about trace gluten sources and... -
Have you had repeat blood testing to see if your antibody levels have gone down? There are many possibilities for celiac disease like symptoms, some of which were mentioned above. I will tell you about the one which applied to me and my son. It is widely accepted that for the vast majority of people with celiac disease the accepted 20 ppm proposed...

				ARCHIVED How Do You Decide?
dilettantesteph replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Listening to others doesn't work well for me. I react to lots of things which others don't and sometimes I don't react when others say that they do. If I am experiencing symptoms, I eliminate one food at a time for a week and see if I feel any better. Then I reintroduce it to see if I get better or worse. I read all I can to help me to decide what... -

				ARCHIVED Steamed Beets.
dilettantesteph replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My experience with beets is that I do better with them from my garden where there are no contamination concerns. Even then, though, I sometimes have problems. They seem to be able to make a preexisting minor stomach problem seem much more major! Beets are known to have an effect on the bowels. Open Original Shared Link -

				ARCHIVED Last Ditch Rant.... Con't
dilettantesteph replied to Littllemel's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I had problems with urinary tract infections, including hospitalizations since I was a child, probably due to undiagnosed celiac disease. As a teen I started drinking cranberry juice and it helped enormously to control the infections. I only had problems when I stopped drinking the juice, and I could control them again by resuming it. Here is a reference... -

ARCHIVED A Documentary Every American Needs To Watch
dilettantesteph replied to bridgeofsighs's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks for posting. I already watched it. I hadn't understood before that one reason for the development of GMOs was to enable the use of massive amounts of round up. That might be more responsible for the problems than the genetic modifications. -

ARCHIVED Am I Re-Glutening Myself With Something Every Day Or Is This A Super Long Glutening?
dilettantesteph replied to aquaholical's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm glad I was helpful. I was afraid I was discouraging after seeing your first comment! (Oh gosh, 4 years???) -
Some of us react to smaller amounts of gluten than others. Some things that are considered to not be present at all can be present in very small amounts. I am a chemist and routinely do distillations. They are not 100.0000000% perfect. I get spectroscopic analysis of my products. There can be other things in there in small amounts, even things with much...
