    ARCHIVED Help

Julz, Congratulations on pharmacy school!! We definately need celiacs in that field. I'm lucky that on the block where my flower shop is, are two restaurants that will make meals for me. At one I get a cheeseburger, no bun and fries. The other I can get Mexican food. If you can get a local restaurant on board with you it will help a lot. ...
  2. Oh yeah! My Kitchenaid is the best. I had burned out many hand mixers till my Mom gave me this. I have had it maybe 15 years and never a problem. I use it several times a week. WE WANT THAT RECIPE!!
  3. I would take a cooler with lots of my own precooked food. The hotels are going to ice so you can keep food cold. chips cooked meat Hormel Naturals lunchmeat corn tortillas Lara bars popcorn, prepopped cheese cubes peanut butter cookies fruit jello cups nuts Peanut butter Have fun!
  4. Are you sure you are not getting glutened secretly? It sounds like you have a good handle on your diet. My weight goes nuts when I have to take any pain killers or cold meds. Have you been around any remodeling products? Some drywall has gluten. Have you added any supplements to your diet? Some have small amounts of gluten that legally are under the...
  5. I would also check your spice rack. I was fooled by a look alike; the original brand was gluten-free but the off brand was not. I hadn't checked...r-r-r-r. It was fun to go out and buy some new things. I went to Dollar General for some. A few of their blends are gluten-free like Soul Food Seasoning, good stuff!
  6. I second (third) the opinion of simple whole foods in the beginning. That's what I did and it gave me a great start. I wasn't smart enough to do it on my own, I was just broke. It worked though. And if I do have a problem, I go back to that way of eating and it helps trememdously. Add new foods slowly to see if they sit well, even if they are gluten...
  7. I was one of those who has gained much weight with no seeming logic. Now I know. I minimized my digestive problems as normal for one who's gallbladder had been removed. I was clueless. Once I went gluten-free, it was amazing the change. Not just digestive but neurological and mental. I'm telling you, you are in for a great revelation on how life can...
  8. I have to add my own results that agree with the above posters. When I eat those prepared foods, I don't react to them but they sit in my gut like a rock. Yesterday I had corn spaghetti, a little too much I guess, got the worst heartburn. Those are occasional treats but I really feel much better and a great sense of well being when I just eat simple foods...
  9. I believe cancer dogs smell the person's breath to ID the cancer. Drug dogs are given a scent induced play toy to train them. A dog with the right nose could be trained to detect just about anything.
  10. I'll add my opinion. We don't have any bakeries or gluten-free restaurants in our area but that would be so nice. Having read so many students complain about their limited choices, I think opening up near a university would be a natural. Also in our state I read of many parents filing for special statis for their celiac children. The school is then required...
  11. I was excited to make Green Bean Casserole with the gluten-free Progresso soup. But I cannot find it in any local stores. Anyone out there had any luck?
  12. OK, my first reaction was YES!! But then I remembered this morning when I opened the bread bag to feed my dogs how the smell of that bread made my stomach turn over. I don't know if I could. I've spent a lot of brain cells turning against gluten. I've done a pretty good job at that. I won't even read about the possible pill. I know when my mom didn...
  13. That girl is a keeper! Enjoy Thanksgiving!
  14. You're my Hero! I hope Santa brings you lots of new clothes! Keep posting so the rest of us can be inspired!
  15. Watch the birth control, it took me awhile to realize that some days of mine had gluten. Now I'm back on the Nuvaring without problems.
  16. I had a little bit on my scalp this week too. Found my DH was sharing my PB & J, didn't know that & couldn't figure out why I was sick and itchy! He felt really bad. I had a problem this spring and that led to a return of the rash in the groin. THat one I finally traced to the syrups I used in my one coffee. We're kind of like detectives, aren...
  17. Last week I found I could no longer tolerate ham. I don't eat it that often so it took awhile to put that together. I also don't eat lunchmeats often. I believe I'm reacting to the nitrites/tates. There was another thread about those that made me notice. If she's eating those kind of meats frequently, that could be a culprit. I also avoid MSG. I...
  18. Got it! DH was using the PB & J on his bread! I know...this is basic stuff. He didn't mean to and I didn't think he liked that. I went to kitchen to have some myself and noticed his knife. I reached for it to spread mine...then OOOH! Can't use his, it will be contaminated. Then it hit me. I felt so stupid! I asked him, "Did you touch your bread...
  19. I had two different DH rashes, one in the groin area that was on both sides and another on my right forearm and hand. I won't say I never had lesions on the left side but there was very little. I also can get those on my scalp but under my hair I really can't tell a pattern, they just itch. These rashes also looked different from each other.
  20. It will get easier, I promise. It is good you are starting out simply, for me I think that was the key to very rapid results. I didn't do it on purpose, I was just broke! Start making a few fun foods that are your favorites and when you master those. then move on. I am a dessert person and that was the very first thing I learned to cook. I had...
  21. Your daughter sounds very astute. Have you asked her what is causing her pain? Maybe she has some idea, like before. If not, it might be a good idea to start a food journal for her. Write down everything that goes in her mouth as well as her symptoms. Maybe the reason will reveal itself. In the meantime, when I am glutened, I back off and go back to...
  22. I don't know about your children, but my sister put together that her grandaughter was sensitive to red dye just from her behavior. DS was sitting for her this last year and this normally delightful child would suddenly fly in rages, screaming and striking out even hitting herself against furniture and walls. She would have to held to protect her from herself...
  23. I know the gluten-free diet seems ovewhelming at first but it is not that bad. It doesn't have to be expensive either. Definately don't cry over pizza! We can all help you with shortcuts and recipes. Just have the faith that you can do it, look at all the people on this forum who did it. You have the greatest motivation to succeed, the health of your...
  24. Yeah, I hear you. I DX'd myself through elimination diet so my dr doesn't really believe me. Especially since I was one of those who gained weight. I agree you need to tighten up your diet and really read those labels. I've stupidly glutened myself by slacking that way. Other sensitivities can pop up. Recently I've realized I'm reacting to nitritrites...
  25. SEveral people have written to say Starbucks has a serious problem with CC. If remember one was an employee. You do need to watch every single thing that goes in his mouth.
