  1. I'm still learning, and will be interested to hear what tips all of you have. The few times I've been out, I've asked for the celiac menu intentionally instead of the gluten free menu. The response to that question and then comparing it to asking for the gluten free menu has been a little test as to how knowledgable the waitress is. I expect a little confusion...
  2. Success! Thank you everyone. I ordered the sirlion without seasoning(just in case) and the incredible garlic mashed potatoes and unseasoned veggies. I wasstuffed, but got the dessert anyway! I was in heaven. I even had enough left over for lunch the next day. My waitress happened to have anaphalactic food allergies, and even though she didn't know what celiac...
  3. Yep. And head, shoulder, joint, muscle, eye, tmj, and every other conceivable place pain. Evil Evil gluten.
  4. Do I need to ask for the fillet cooked on foil?
  5. I'm planning dinner out with a friend on Monday. I have a 50/50 record of glutening while dining out, so I gave up restaraunts. Outback is a convenient 1/2 way meeting spot, so I'm gonna give it a go. I'd consider myself a super sensitive. What advice do you have for making this a success. I'm scared of being sick all week.
  6. A lot of Vitamin E comes from Wheat Germ. It also goes by tocopherol and tocopherol acetate. Many companies use other sources though. I call the company. I never thought about it in hand soap.
  7. I developed nodular episcleritis two weeks ago. I was diagnosed 1 week ago and given prednislone drops with a return visit scheduled in a few days. The drops seem to be at least partially working. The eye doctor mentioned an autoimmune link. Does anyone have any experience with episcleritis? Am I overreacting if I ask for testing for Anklylosing spondylitis...
  8. So as I take baby steps out, I'm drinking: plain absolute absolute and kahlua (black russian) Redbridge (yum! and I don't usually care for beer) Kind of darker and lagery) New Grist is more like a Bud or other mass marketed beer and Bards tale is somewhere in between. Kahulah and cream if I can find a soy creamer. I hope you find some more recommendations...
  9. I do like the idea of a therapist. Cognitive Behavioral would be perfect for this situation. I was so sick that I didn't want the gluten much. I bought lots of things that were non gluten that I liked like strawberries, chocolate, smoothie ingredients, tortilla chips. I kept my mouth full of something the first 3 months. That way I didn't get much in...
  10. My cholesterol has always been over 200 since I was 17. I was always skinny. Every time I had it checked, one or more of the numbers was in the bad range. Which one seemed to vary. I made attempts to control my cholesterol, but eventually would get lax about it and then the every few years blood draw would tell me to pay attention again. It never topped ...
  11. I'm still up in the air about the herbs. Thank you for the reassurances though. I did use some in a recipe the other night, but I was already suffering from an unrelated glutening. Darn CC. I want to share my thoughts on plastic bread bags though. The bread has to get into the bags somehow. They are in the same factory crumbs or flour dust touching at...
  12. My reaction to glutening was less and less since after the first two weeks gluten free. It is still painful and horrible, but a fraction of the misery I was in prediagnosis. Best wishes.
  13. Eating grapes with freshly washed hands. The soap had vitamin E. Picking up a bag of garbage with used birdseeds at the bottom. Woosh. Up with a plume of gluten in the face.
  14. My neighbor dropped off a bunch of veggies and herbs delivered in groery bags. Would you eat the herbs? I can't really wash them well and if bread was in that...Oh the paranoia. But if they were safe,....Mountains of organic herbs. What whould you do?
  15. I'm hoping that if I can convince the mom to get the blood testing done and request the lab results, then she can have that information to make an educated decision of her own about a gluten free diet. I'm also harboring the secret hope that enough people respond to this post one way or another that I can direct her here for some mom to mom advice. Thanks...
  16. I have a friend who's child has been sick. She is medically literate and we have an open dialogue about my Celiac. Will you read a little of her last e-mail to me with her interpretation of the Rhumatologist's information. Does it sound like the doctor or my friend are missing a celiac diagnosis? Additionally, my friend's mother has Type 1 diabeties and the...
  17. I'm sure by this point, you have done just about everything possible to eliminate gluten. I just wanted to brainstorm hidden sources in case there is a culprit lurking around. I agree malnutrition is high on my suspicion list for you though. I hope this isn't insulting, but have you: Checked: pet food bird food-indoor/out (what a relief that was when...
  18. Ok, I deleted this message because I was wrong. the bars I was thinking of were chocolate coated bars not sandwiches.
  19. I have a mild allergy to eggs. I get the flu shot most years. I don't get sick, but maybe feel a little off for a bit. Nothing like gluten, the flu, or even a migraine. Just a little ehh. My arm is a bit more bruised feeling than other shots I've gotten. With the egg allergy, mass immunizations or pharmacies won't give it to you unless you lie. My doctor...
  20. Are your waves going across the nail or up and down? Different causes for each. If I remember correctly, across is illness/physical stress/manicure damage, up and down is vitamin deficiency/aging. I don't remember which vitamin, but I'm thinking one of the B's. I had both, and both have improved. I'm sure you will get a more informative post.
  21. Type I, II, & III autoimmune polyglandular syndromes PAS IIIC - Autoimmune thyroiditis with vitiligo and/or alopecia and/or other organ-specific autoimmune disease Open Original Shared Link It looks like there are some links between celiac and vitilligo. Vitilligo is also associated with a lot of other autoimmune diseases.
  22. I also share that a lot of the increase in the number of gluten free people is better understanding of the disease. better blood work, better education, better understanding of the need for compliance with the diet, better food choices.
  23. I seem to follow ElleReigh's pattern. I'm 11 months gluten free and OCD about CC. My longest stretch was 5 weeks. Prior to that, it was 2.5 weeks. I do have a shared kitchen with very very minimal gluten. I don't think I've been getting sick from home though. Soap at work in combination with grapes, inhaled gluten, 2 of 4 restaraunt attempts, crummy children...
  24. I'm not hypoglycemic, but I do eat frequently and feel badly if I go more than 3-4 hours. The trip over to the marina is 2 hours+2 hours back + 30 min ceremony+ 3 hour cruise, A 3 hour cruise... (The weather started getting rough, The tiny ship was rocked....) Sorry, couldn't help myself there. Ok. I'll eat my main meals in the car on the way there and...
  25. I'm the snuggly, chase the kids, kiss the kids, give them a piggy back ride aunt. I'm also the therapist who gets down to eye level, grins, plays peek-a-boo, holds the hands, turns the head, shares the toys, and cuts the food of my preschoolers at work. Well, several times, (including last week), I've gotten random gluten exposure from being with the...
