  1. I've had pretty good luck at salad bars where all the greens, veggies and fruit are on one end and the dressings, croutons and gluteny things are on the other end. Everybody moves in one direction and it would be difficult to contaminate the greens from the opposite end of the bar - unless it was done in the kitchen which is an entirely different worry.
  2. This is wonderful news! I hope it lasts. I was afraid it could have been from stress, as SGWhiskers said earlier. My oldest has a nervous habit of pulling all the fur off her tummy and inner thighs. The two boys get on her nerves at times and this is how she shows her displeasure. Hopefully that isn't your problem and the change in diet is all that's necessary...
  3. I saw it yesterday and have to say it's very mainstream . Everyone seems normal and not weird because they can't have gluten. Maybe we'll be seeing more of these type of ads as more as more companies produce gluten-free products. Yay!
  4. Thank you! I don't think they're rare but may be a more recent breed than some others. They're pretty much Siamese without the albino gene that gives them their "points." My breeder always described OSH as "Siamese that come in more colors." I guess everybody has figured out by now my favorite topics are cats and food.
  5. No, they're Oriental Shorthairs.
  6. I think you have to remember to do it each time you reply to a post, at least that's the only way I've found. There's a thingie at the bottom that says "Click to configure post options." Click on the third one, "Enable email notification." If there's an easier way, I hope somebody can tell us. I usually forget to do it.
  7. We call them airplane ears. Her brother has even bigger ears. Here's a picture of them together. Wow, i didn't know the picture thingie would work here. As long as I have Photobucket open, here's one of Koal enjoying a sink bath. He's totally soaked!
  8. They're amazing. I have one who loves asparagus and Italian salad dressing. If I leave asparagus on the counter, she'll slowly drag them all away. Licking our salad bowls when we're finished is another thing she loves. Apparently she doesn't know cats are supposed to hate vinegar and sour stuff!
  9. How cute! Some cats love to do this. For some reason, they think the toy needs a good soaking. Part of the fun is "fishing" it out. I wonder if your new baby has some Siamese or OSH in her as these breeds love water and aren't afraid to get wet. One of mine throws his toys in the pool and yells at me until I come fish it out and two love playing in...
  10. I got terribly sick there the first time I went. I ordered a salad off the gluten-free menu and it came with an apple as the side. I figured a whole apple would be safe. When it arrived, the apple was covered in crumbs. Okay, easy enough to avoid. I ate my salad and about 30 minutes later, I knew not to try eating there again. I suspect those crumbs...
  11. I love these little corn cakes - they taste just like popcorn. I found them at Nutrition S'Mart, a Florida health food chain. They make a wonderful little snack.
  12. All the Glutino pretzels are MINE! DH won't touch " -free" anything . . . just might be too healthy for his liking. Leaves more for me.
  13. All commercial cats foods, both dry and wet , have taurine added to make them a completely balanced food. I was referring to folks who cook "people food" for their cats. Nothing wrong with this as long as they get a balanced diet from either raw, commercial, or supplemental cat food. In fact, I think some of my friends who feed a raw diet also supplement...
  14. I used to toss their canned food if it wasn't eaten in an hour or so. I was about to give up on wet food when I forgot to throw it away one evening and to my surprise, it had all been eaten by bedtime. Thanks, Peter, for clarifying this. I think some cats prefer to nibble a little rather than scarf it all down in one sitting. One thing about taurine,...
  15. Raw bones won't hurt a cat. In Nature, nobody removed the bones for them. Cooked bones are a worry. They shatter and splinter and aren't safe. Raw organic chicken wings are excellent for teeth cleaning. All that gnawing cleans the teeth and exercises the gums, just like they did before humans started feeding them.
  16. I LOVE this dessert! I've eaten it a number of times and never got sick, but I have gotten sick from their vegetables. Be sure to always order them without seasoning. There's something in their seasoning butter that gets me every time if I'm not careful when I order. I got my husband's veggies once and had taken one bite before I realized we had them switched...
  17. This is true. Feeding dry food also increases the risk of dental disease. Although many vets still think the crunching effect will help keep their teeth clean, dry food sticks to their teeth. I have Siamese and OSHs - dental problems are very common in these breeds. Unfortunately, the best diet is a raw diet including raw, organic chicken. Not all of...
  18. I would try to get her off the Temptations. The second ingredient listed (after meat by-products) is corn. Perhaps you can wean her off slowly and see how it goes. I know, easier said than done. *sigh* One time I had my cats thinking Wellness Core was a treat. I put it in a cat treat canister and shook it like I would their treats. Maybe you can find...
  19. I bought a box of Saco Mix 'n Drink nonfat dry milk recently and there's no disclaimer that I can see. I've used it before and never had a problem with it. From the Saco website . . . Q: I am a gluten-intolerant person (Celiac Sprue Disease), and would like to know which of your product A: According to our manufacturers, the following items are
  20. All cats will benefit from not only a gluten-free diet but a grain-free diet as well. Cats are obligate carnivores and although a small amount of grain can be ingested when eating wild prey, their normal diet does not include grains. Corn is a big allergen in cats, probably worse than wheat. Many "grocery store" cat foods are basically corn. The fur-pulling...
  21. Short-grain brown rice might be nice. I had it at PF Changs not long ago and it reminded me of the barley I used to love as a side dish. It wasn't overcooked, just a bit chewy like barley.
  22. I found one gluten-free variety of Smart Ones one time but it wasn't worth the effort in hunting it down. I've had good luck with the Glazed Chicken Lean Cuisine. The ingredients don't list any questionable items and I haven't reacted to them. To be honest, I don't eat them every often, just as an occasional quick dinner when I'm in a hurry.
  23. I've always been an adventurous eater but have narrowed my menu choices to the basics. I miss trying out the new chef's specials and the fancy gourmet dishes but it's safer keeping it simple. When I order something for the first time, I ask questions and tell them why I'm asking. If I get good service and don't get sick, I'll stick with that restaurant -...
  24. I eat them for breakfast every day and always give them about 25 - 30 seconds in the microwave to make them more pliable. Sometimes I spread them with cream cheese, roll it all up and pretend it's a bagel.

    ARCHIVED Fosamax

Wow, this explains a lot. No wonder I was so sick on Fosamax and Boniva. I didn't realize I was celiac or gluten intolerant at that time. In fact, I was sort of blaming the drugs for being the "trigger" in activating the disease. I fully expect my doctor to try pushing those drugs on me again so now I have some ammunition. Thanks!
