ARCHIVED Looking For A Friend Who Understands
rosetapper23 replied to freedomseek00's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I live in Martinez in Contra Costa County--whereabouts are you located? There are a number of gluten-free folks in the S.F. Bay Area, and we used to meet up every few months at Mariposa Bakery in Oakland....but it's been a while. If you register at Open Original Shared Link, you'll get invited to local gluten-free meetups. You just missed a one-day gluten... -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac Mom (On Gluten) And Under-Formed Palate?
rosetapper23 replied to megsybeth's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do recall reading an article several years ago linking this condition to celiac. It interested me because my niece was born with this problem....and now she suspects she has celiac disease. She refused to get tested and simply decided to follow a gluten-free diet. You might do a keyword search on celiac and palate to see if you can find the article. -
ARCHIVED Could Use Your Advice Regarding Body Aches And Vitamin D
rosetapper23 replied to Framefunnyfarm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whether or not the low Vitamin D level is causing your aches, you should start supplementing soon because Vitamin D is a very important nutrient for keeping you well and protecting you from certain cancers. For people with celiac, it's advised at conferences that we take Country Life Natural Vitamin D, which contains Vitamin A (you need to take a proper... -
ARCHIVED Iron
rosetapper23 replied to AmyVC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In two days??! Wow, believe me, that would be extremely rare. It usually takes 6-24 months for most folks. My ability to absorb iron didn't return for four years. -
ARCHIVED Questioning
rosetapper23 replied to gene0's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that your thyroid needs to be tested. Hypothyroidism can cause aching/popping joints and bones, fatigue, mental fogginess, etc. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Completely Lost!
rosetapper23 replied to brattnie07's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Complicated? Only in the beginning! Gluten-free bakeries are extremely popular these days--you could end up with a very successful enterprise! -
I use such questions as opportunities to educate people. I've found that when I discuss it openly and in a knowledgeable fashion, people seem drawn in and begin to wonder if they or people they know have it. It helps to point out how common celiac disease is and how few people have been diagnosed. Tell them it's a genetic, autoimmune disease that affects...

ARCHIVED Can Somebody Help Me Figure Out Where To Go From Here?
rosetapper23 replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With celiac, oftentimes the first area to be damaged is the area where iron is absorbed, and, therefore, iron anemia can be the first or foremost symptom. Your child is still young, so it's not unusual for the doctors to find very little damage. Since iron makes him constipated and gives him stomach distress, I agree that infusions for a little while might... -
ARCHIVED Iron
rosetapper23 replied to AmyVC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your physician is amenable, you can receive intravenous infusions to bring your iron/ferritin level up. This will help you feel better immediately, and once your gut heals, you should be able to absorb iron naturally. If not, you can receive the infusions on a regular basis. Some of us here on the Forum have done this. Your physician, however, may... -
ARCHIVED Healing Strategies In Addition To gluten-free Diet?
rosetapper23 replied to October3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, there is a product called Metagenics UltraClear Sustain Medical Food, which comes in powder form to be added to a smoothie. After 18 months on a gluten-free diet (and I do have celiac), I still experienced diarrhea. My doctor recommended this product to heal my gut, and within two weeks, I felt "normal." If you're not interested in this product, though... -
ARCHIVED Afraid Yet Optimistic, For My Husband
rosetapper23 replied to nicoleashley's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Please take a peek at the Australia/New Zealand thread--they mention lots of special treats that are gluten free and can be found in Australia. Personally, I LOVE the Butterfingers shortbread cookies...and there's a shortbread cookie that's orange flavored with chocolate frosting that I adore. My daughter ships these home to me for the holidays. -
ARCHIVED Babies With Celiac, What Did You First Notice?
rosetapper23 replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Generally, besides stomach upsets and diarrhea/constipation, symptoms can include irritability, blanking out (staring into space), anxiety, clinginess, aggressive behavior, and moodiness/crankiness. This is what is taught at celiac conferences, and my nephew had ALL of these symptoms from a very early age. Also, look for toeing in of his feet once he starts... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Completely Lost!
rosetapper23 replied to brattnie07's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Congratulations on finally finding out what is wrong! You're going to start feeling better, and I'm so happy for you!!! Just remember--natural, whole foods don't contain gluten. If you're ever feeling lost about what to eat, grab some fruit, a vegetable, a diary product (except some yogurts), nuts, or meats, and you'll be safe. At first, you'll want to... -
ARCHIVED Just Met With Dietician Today Really Confused And Slightly Scared!
rosetapper23 replied to Meadowsk1002's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Excellent advice! One last thing: your future mother-in-law needs to understand that, without strict adherence to a gluten-free diet, you may experience fertility issues...and she will never see a grandchild enter the picture. This alone may help persuade her to be a bit more compassionate. Also, I second the recommendation from IrishHeart about "Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Just Met With Dietician Today Really Confused And Slightly Scared!
rosetapper23 replied to Meadowsk1002's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's no reason to go vegan, since you can safely eat most meats. Do you know how to cook? If you cook the meat on a barbecue, be sure to place it on aluminum foil so that it doesn't touch areas of the grill where barbecue sauce or breaded items have been place previously. Get your own toaster and buy your own gluten-free bread. Vegetables, fruits,... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Test Results Of 5 Year Old. Doctor Very Unhelpful!
rosetapper23 replied to Tiffanylee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Congratulations on a firm diagnosis! BTW, you said that you're "from Australia." Do you still live there? Or did you move to the States? Just curious....because you have many gluten-free options in Australia. Also, there is an Australia/New Zealand thread that is very popular, and you might wish to join in the conversation. Personally, I wish I lived... -
ARCHIVED Eight Months gluten-free & Struggling - Paleo?
rosetapper23 replied to WendyLee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First, let me say that you are SO fortunate to live in Australia! I wish I could retire there--the awareness of celiac is so great, I always feel safe when I dine there. My daughter is a permanent resident, so I visit once a year. That said, I'm wondering from your description if you might have Hashimoto's. Have you been tested recently for thyroid problems... -
ARCHIVED Ack! Is This A Wheat Allergy Too?
rosetapper23 replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Three months on a gluten-free diet might not be long enough to clear up the D. I had D issues for 18 months--and I was very strict about following the diet and didn't have issues with other foods. However, what helped me was taking L-glutamine. That's what finally cleared it up. -
ARCHIVED Exhausted And Venting
rosetapper23 replied to glutenfree015's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know it sounds easy to add vitamins and minerals....but, really, if you have celiac, you won't be able to absorb these nutrients no matter how much you supplement. If you decide to take Vitamin D, please consider taking Natural Vitamin D from Country Life, because it provides both Vitamin D and A (in the correct ratio) as well as medium-chain triglycerides... -
ARCHIVED Just Starting Out...
rosetapper23 replied to tio1514's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, your mom is wrong--you canNOT take a multi-vitamin with wheat in it. Absolutely not! You should get your vitamin/mineral levels tested and take only those nutrients that you're deficient in. With a whole-foods diet, you should be able to get most of what you need from your food. If you're unable to absorb any nutrients, your tests should show you... -
Important: Eliminate all iodine for a while. It's important, when you have DH, to eliminate BOTH gluten and iodine. If you can do this, your rash should stop itching within a few days. This means that you should eliminate dairy during that time, because dairy contains high amounts of iodine in some areas of the country.
