    ARCHIVED New To Celiac

They usually put you under heavy sedation through your IV. I've had two EGDs(upper scope) and a colonoscopy and my son had an EGD and they used propofol IV. We didn't remember a thing.
  2. You need to avoid rye, barley and commercial oats(cross contaminated with wheat..there are certified gluten free oats but you may want to wait to heal before introducing them) also in addition to wheat. Wheat and rye will be clearly labled, but barley can hide in natural flavorings. Not all natural flavorings contain gluten however, so reading lables and...
  3. I agree with the previous two posters. Go gluten free with both kids. I delayed gluten free with my oldest because of negative blood testing for two years. He is doing so well and I'm glad I did get him on it. And again my youngest son only had a positive IgA tTG, nothing else, but is celiac none the less. You and Dad should get screened too since your...
  4. That was a great video.
  5. Your symptoms definately warrant getting tested for celiac. Here is a list of the tests to ask for: total IgA (this validates the IgA testing. If you are deficient the IgA tests are useless and need to have the IgG versions done) IgA/IgG tTG IgA/IgG DPG EMA If any of those are positive or your symptoms warrant, an EGD(upper scope) with at least...
  6. You might want to consider having her at least blood tested before you put her gluten free. False negatives are higher in children but if they are positive you would have added information and documentation for daycare/school. Of course the tests could be skewed if she is eating gluten light due to you being gluten free. Just something to think about....
  7. I agree with this. You have a pretty cut and dry celiac diagnosis. Just to give you something ponder over.. My youngest son had horrible issues from birth. We seen an allergist/immunologist for a long time and he did work wonders for him and by 3.5 years old he was pretty normal and off all the boat loads of meds he was taking. A couple of...
  8. I've made a homemade version myself by using Betty Hagman's vinegar pastry dough recipe. I rolled out the dough and then put jam, preserves or brown sugar/cinnamon in the middle and put another piece of dough on top and sealed. I baked them in the oven until they were golden brown. When they cooled I made a powdered sugar glaze and frosted the tops. The...
  9. It is nice having the homemade applesauce. My mom brought me a whole bunch of apples in Oct. that someone gave to her. It was fun making it together. I also had made some apple pies, but they were gone in a heartbeat. My kids and husband like to thaw it just enough to be able to get it out of the jar. They love it when there are still ice crystals in...
  10. I forgot about those. I love them! It is easy to down a whole box in one sitting if I'm not paying attention.
  11. We tried our local MM about 4 months ago. It was nice to have an option for eating out. We all liked it enough, but I agree the crust was a little grainy and thin. My oldest son(almost 11) went there yesterday with his friend. He ordered a gluten free pizza. I sent him with some money to pay for it(his friend's parents never let him pay though)....

    ARCHIVED Oats

Yes if you do try oats again you need for them to be pure "certified" gluten free. It will state on the lable. If it doesn't state gluten free on the lable don't eat them. Bobs Red Mill does sell certified gluten free oats. This was the brand I tried. They tasted really good, but the after effects were not. Bob's Red Mill is really good company...

    ARCHIVED Oats

Are you eating regular oats or pure certified gluten free oats? If you are eating regular oats then yes they are cross contaminated with wheat during harvesting all the way to production. If you are eating the pure certified gluten free oats then you could be reacting to the protein in the oat itself (avenin). There are about 10-15% of celiacs that...
  14. I don't have any stuff left over to use up in the freezer but the fridge is full. I just got an upright freezer in Oct. and I'm needing to fill it up. So far I have put in about 18 pints of homemade apple sauce, some shredded zucchini, 1/2 gallon jar of chicken stock with meat, 2.5 qt. of beef stock made out of ox tail, some meat my butcher hubby brought...
  15. Yuck, I hate glutino crackers. I found Schar table crackers and they are almost like a cross between a butter cracker and a saltine. They do crumble easy and don't have a lot of salt on them. That aside, they work good for cheese and crackers and I use them as cracker crumbs for breading shrimp and fish. YUMMY!

    ARCHIVED Great News!

    Congrats!
  17. Most of the time the "twilight sedation" they use is propofol. I was told during my first EDG that I was metabolizing it too quickly because I was waking up and trying to hit people. Good thing I don't remember it. So when I went in for my colonoscopy two months later, I joked about them getting horse kicked. They weren't taking any chances and gave me...
  18. Personally it is up to you to decide if you want the scope or not. With positive blood work it is pretty conclusive you have celiac. I did want the scope to not only biopsy for celiac, but to look for other potential issues as well. My youngest son only had a positive IgA tTG and I chose not to have him undergo a scope/biopsy but he was only 5 at the time...
  19. Well, it had been 3.5 months, almost 4, since my oldest son went gluten free. Here are some of the improvements we have seen: weight gain of around 6 lbs., slowly starting to grow in height, increase in shoe size, bowel movements regular going at least every day to every other day and no more stomach aches/bloating/constipation. So at the beginning...
  20. This was a stupid article. I get the point they were trying to make, but a it could have been executed SO MUCH BETTER!
  21. Welcome and happy new year. Read all you can on here. There is a lot of good advice and support.
  22. Healing is different for everyone. I noticed improvements in some symptoms pretty quickly, but others took almost a year or so to get better. I still have struggles here and there. I think for me, the years undiagnosed left some permanant issues. Here is some advice I gave to another member so I'm going to copy and paste it here for you too.
  23. In the beginning it can be really hard. I never realized how much gluten impacted almost everything in my life. I was mad, angry, jelous, and happy(to know how to feel better without alot of drugs) all at the same time. It was crazy. A lot of mistakes were made in the beginning, but it was a good learning tool for me. Three years into this and I still...
  24. We had a quiet day at home. I ate leftover stir fry for breakfast and I made the husband and boys waffles and sausage. We ate late and snacked all day so we really didn't have lunch. For supper we had fried shrimp, baked potato and steamed whole green beens. I made a second meal to bring to work and share with a coworker since it is Christmas. ...
  25. Merry Christmas everyone!
