  1. somewhere in here.... someone listed the name of an Irish Creme that was gluten free. I was going to write it down but thought that I could remember the name.... oh well, you know the rest!!!!! Anyway, it is the Christmas Season and some nice Irish Creme in coffee with lots of whipped creme on the top sounds wonderful!!!!!
  2. I am a floral designer.... silks.... so talk about being sick of Christmas.... I have been living, sleeping and eating Christmas (I wonder if it is gluten-free) since October. I don't even enjoy decorating our home anymore and I have a husband who LOVES Christmas...the decorations and the lights. BAH HUMBUG!!!!!! Right now he is outside putting up holiday...
  3. How is the gluten free bread cycle different? I just use a regular bread maker (not a really expensive model) and I think my bread turns out great. It smells great and tastes okay. I can even use it to make sandwiches that don't have to be toasted. The crust does get a little brown... but that is okay. There is a control on it for light crust though...
  4. Supervalue grocery stores are willing to check for gluten but I have to send them the UPC code so they can check.... that is too much of a hassle so I just don't eat their store brand. I tend to go with manufacturers I can trust to mark their foods or products gluten-free. I haven't had lots of trouble with getting response from the manufacturer and if...
  5. I used to think that it was important to have an "official" dx but after reading some of the horror stories about insurance, I am thinking that going gluten-free without a dx might be the best route to take. Of course, the medical community, your friends and family will probably think you are nuts but if being gluten-free makes everyone feel better than...
  6. WOW! Your description of the neurological damage contributed to celiac disease fits me to a T!.... especially the part about not being able to find the right word.... knowing the word is in my brain but can't find a way to my tongue.... I am sending my Internist and my Neurologist the link to the study mentioned by Helena. In fact, I think that I will...
  7. I suffered from migraines and other headaches from the time I was 13 until I went gluten-free in June of 2002. It was several weeks after going gluten-free and I realized that I had not had a headache. I usually had 2-3 headaches a week. I can even eat the things that triggered migraines before such as wine, cheese, chocolate! I am 60 now and suffered...
  8. My chlorestoral dropped over 80 points over a 2 year span after going gluten-free. I did not take meds. I think that my body was finally working correctly and the numbers dropped. I do use Smart Balance and maybe that had something to do with it but I think that it is the gluten-free diet and my body finally processing foods correctly.
  9. Old Wisconsin makes wonderful beef sticks! They also make braunschauger, polish sausage, brats and cheesy polish sausage. All of these items are gluten free and marked so right on the package. I know that this is not the healthiest food available but they are good and a wonderful treat. No one would ever guess that they are gluten-free... for those food...
  10. I use corn starch. There is a recipe on the box. I have NEVER had lumps or gravy that has not turned out. The only difference is that the gravy is shiny on the surface. I never had luck with flour gravy so started making gravy from corn starch years before dx. Good luck!
  11. It is really hard when it is your child and her feelings that you are dealing with. I know how frustrated I get when I bring gluten-free food to share and nobody touches it because somehow it is not the "traditional" Thanksgiving or holiday fare even though in reality it is "traditional" just not filled with gluten. This year I am just making my own turkey...
  12. Unless the kids come over, it is just the hubby and me and NO, I do not make my own pasta. Too much work for the two of us. I make most everything else from scratch but not the pasta. If I was still feeding a large family that might be different but since it is just the two of us, I buy the pasta. For a quick meal, I use the Thai Kitchen pasta dishes...
  13. I agree about the cross contamination. For awhile I was eating corn tortillas.... recipe of corn flour and water and lime. Everytime I ate them, I would get sick. I always thoought it might be something else. Then the company changed labeling and it stated "produced in a facility that also makes wheat products." I am suspicious of anything produced in...
  14. I have a huge collection of cookbooks from those wonderful church cook books to specialty cookbooks. My favorite is the Fanny Farmer cookbook. I have just adjusted recipes first when I was diagnosed with diabetis to now when I make things gluten-free. My cookbooks have lots of notations of what has worked and what has not worked. I love cookbooks. I...
  15. I have Benign Paranysm....(long word I can't remember how to spell) Positional vertigo. It is a strange disease where the floaters in your inner ear get dislodged and you get really dizzy.... like falling over for no reason. Every several years for about the last 10, I just start getting dizzy. I tip over & often experience symptoms of the room spinning...
  16. And what kind of bread is that????????
  17. I have had itchiness for several years. I cannot figure out what it is from. It seems to get worse in fall. It got so bad several years ago.... my stomach, legs, arms, sholders, back, and hips were a bloody mess. The doc ran all sorts of allergy tests (only dairy came back positive... but only a mild reaction). At first he thougth it was DH but that...
  18. So is stasha flour mix available over the internet???? Do you have an address?????
  19. Just a note of advice from someone who is 60 and is suffering from long term gluten use. I was sick for about 20 years before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. I won't bore you with the details of why I wasn't diagnosed sooner but by the time I was diagnosed the doc could tell just by looking at the villa (they were so flattened) that I probably had...
  20. If you have been gluten-free and have been feeling better, I don't think I would risk a gluten challenge. BUT it is a personal decision... I would really consider what the benefit of being glutened on purpose would be! Good luck on your decision.
  21. Check the Ezekial (spelling) as I don't think that it is gluten-free. I know that I have seen it and it appears to be gluten-free but on closer examination, I think I found it too risky to try. My husband got me a bread maker for my birthday and it makes good bread that you can actually make sandwiches with and not have to toast the stuff to make it sort...
  22. I have a bread machine and find that it makes wonderful gluten-free bread. I know that there is a lot of satisfaction in making the bread from scratch and doing the whole thing but the bread machine makes it a whole lot easier and you still get the great smell of homemade bread. Plus I make cakes, non yeast breads in my machine. It makes life easier and...
  23. Nature Made (a brand that I buy at CUB Foods in MN - they are part of the Supervalue chain) states right on the label that it is gluten-free. I also use several other Nature Made supplements and have never had any trouble... plus they are not as expensive as the gluten-free supplements that I used to buy at the health food store.
