ARCHIVED Had My First Pity Party Last Night
GottaSki replied to tctwhite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You should be proud of yourself! Wish I could tell you it won't happen again, but it will. Good news it does get much easier and after some time you may find it very rare. My pity parties are very infrequent and revolve around jealousy that others can eat without preparing in advance, rather than being jealous of the gluten containing food they are... -
ARCHIVED Testing Show Not Neg
GottaSki replied to Sheloveshim's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! First - you are not imagining your symptoms. Second - you are not the first person to know there may be a problem with gluten so remove or "mostly" remove gluten at different periods in their life. Pregnancy and nursing can play havoc with more than just hormones and can cause the symptoms of Celiac Disease to worsen. If you want to pursue... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Before Endoscopy
GottaSki replied to KikiB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My first response to Tom was for the benefit of the OP along with anyone else reading it that may be struggling to obtain a diagnosis. My intent was to explain that the endo can provide valid information even before there is significant tissue damage. Tom- The specific problem I have with your post is that it suggests that the OP needn't remain gluten... -
ARCHIVED How Long Should I Be Eating Gluten Before Endoscopy ?
GottaSki replied to MoMof2Boyz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"Mushroom" provided this link to a paper regarding biopsies specifically for Celiac Disease. It is the clearest explanation I've seen to date: Open Original Shared Link Take a look and show it to your doctor. Unfortunately many GIs are not familiar with the best protocols for diagnosing Celaic Disease. Celiac damage to the small intestine can... -
ARCHIVED Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies
GottaSki replied to chasesparents's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome Lisa You may want to try Envirokidz Kaola Crisp Cereal. The cocoa flavor is more mild than some of the other chocolate cereals, but does have a similar texture to rice crispies - might be worth a shot. Also, just so you know - you are replying to an old thread - the original poster hasn't logged in for six years and is not likely to see... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does Healing Take! So Frustrated!
GottaSki replied to Maryw88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is what you want to stick to for a while. Paleo recipes can help make things a bit more interesting. Who knew you could make a decent fried rice with cauliflower? I certainly didn't a year ago. There are many recipes for bread/muffins that can be made with almond or coconut flour. I completely understand your frustration. Unfortunately it can... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease And Scared
GottaSki replied to copgirl125's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes. Absolutely. Give yourself time. This is all very new to you. Shadow already answered a few of your concerns very well - ask as many questions as you need - you are not alone - we've all gone through the transition and are here to help. Hang in there! -
ARCHIVED Found Something For Inflammation
GottaSki replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lil' Guinea Pig #10 reporting in. Just drank the first cup. Let me preface this by saying I don't like tea - not ever - not iced, sweet, hot, green, nada - I do drink ginger tea on occasion to help settle my stomach, but not happily. I liked the Nettle Tea - plain without sweetener - I'm amazed - maybe my body really wants it? I've been off all supplements... -

Stepping up zonulin research is outstanding....the other trials are moving along at snails pace - actually I think snails are quicker. I had a crush on him from reading his research - years before I saw his picture

ARCHIVED Baked Goods Cooked At Higher Temperatures To Make Them Gluten Free?
GottaSki replied to jantrelau's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
You were correct - that theory is a false. This is one myth that needs busting. -
ARCHIVED Pepsi
GottaSki replied to lilaclissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, SUGAR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, CAFFEINE, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR Eight ingredients - I can tolerate only one of them. I agree - ditch the Pepsi for awhile. Depending on how much you've been consuming you may get the added joy of caffeine withdrawal to your other symptoms. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Before Endoscopy
GottaSki replied to KikiB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't take it personally. We simply disagree on what should be done to give current testing mechanisms their best chance to diagnose &/or help people. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Before Endoscopy
GottaSki replied to KikiB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If a person removes gluten before endoscopy it can reduce the amount of lymphocytes detected in the biopsies of the small intestine. While increased lymphocytes are not specific to Celiac Disease - the increase caused in reaction to gluten ingestion is the first indication of Celiac Disease and precedes tissue damage. Given it is difficult for many... -
ARCHIVED I Just Want To Make Sure I'm Not Crazy
GottaSki replied to BlackStar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are not crazy for thinking this or for hoping that it may be the answer to resolve many of your health concerns. Make sure you keep eating gluten until all testing is complete. The blood tests measure antibodies that are produced when gluten is consumed - remove gluten and the tests are not accurate. Take it one step at a time - the great news... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Before Endoscopy
GottaSki replied to KikiB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This happens to many of us - I found it helpful - clear reactions confirmed the need to be as gluten-free as possible. -
ARCHIVED Surprised This Morning With Celiac Diagnosis, Not Sure What To Do
GottaSki replied to rorenchan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That kitchen would scare any of us. You'll need your own toaster, colander, can opener, etc. I highly suggest getting a second set of cookware and cooking utensils in a different color to minimize cross contamination. If it is possible designate one counter as a gluten free zone for your food prep - if not, prepare everything with a barrier - gluten... -
ARCHIVED Blood Work
GottaSki replied to DavinaRN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You don't need to overdo. One slice of gluten containing bread per day is sufficient. Once you have the blood results, you may decide to have an endoscopy to obtain celiac biopsies - you need to keep eating gluten until the endoscopy is completed. Good luck with your testing -
ARCHIVED Iga False Negative To Gluten And Other Known Problems
GottaSki replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure I understand your question. Being deficient in one immunoglobulin does not mean you can't make antibodies at all. It is possible to have celiac damage with deficient IgA. It is my understanding that antibodies are created and released by a white blood cells called plasma cells in response to a foreign substance the body perceives as... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
GottaSki replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do not feel sorry for us - we can control a serious medical condition by eating healthy foods - no medication, no surgery. We are fortunate -
ARCHIVED Iga False Negative To Gluten And Other Known Problems
GottaSki replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is one area that needs more research - there are people that are diagnosed by positive endoscopic biopsy that have all negative blood work. Current testing is not yet accurate enough. Here are two reasons I can think of for false negatives with current tests: Time gluten-free before blood draw. Insufficient IgA - this is the reason for the Total... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Before Endoscopy
GottaSki replied to KikiB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can you call for urgent or cancellation appointment? Sometimes your primary can request an urgent appointment if you can't. I don't recall - did you already have positive blood tests? If not, I'd suggest getting a full celiac blood panel before you go gluten-free should you decide you it is not worth waiting for an endo to go gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED One Week, No Improvement?
GottaSki replied to Mary5757's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is no need for everyone to go gluten-free right away. There are many whole foods that are naturally gluten-free - as you transition you'll find what is best for your family. I suggest dinners be gluten-free so you aren't preparing multiple meals. With an 18 month old you will have to be careful about where gluten is prepared. Do you have pets? ... -
ARCHIVED One Week, No Improvement?
GottaSki replied to Mary5757's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For now you can line your daughter's food with foil on the grill. Some will recommend replacing the grilling racks. Personally I think if it is cleanable - maybe with steel wool if needed - then clean it. For our BBQ my husband cleaned the racks with a wire brush then turned the flame up to high after cleaning and I never had a problem with it. -
ARCHIVED One Week, No Improvement?
GottaSki replied to Mary5757's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome! I know it is very frustrating when you can't see improvement. With the symptoms you list it can take some time. The first symptoms in young children to improve are usually the digestive - tummy aches, diarrhea, etc - even these can take weeks and months, rather than days. It can take time for the inflammation to subside and for her small intestine...
