ARCHIVED Which Of Your gluten-free Recipes Came Out Really Great
jststric replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, I tried a stuffing this year that didn't turn out too badly. Wasn't quite crispy enough for my hubby's taste, but the flavor was good. I also made some little pumpkin "pies" in muffin tins using Enjoy Life Gingerbread cookies on the bottom. Cooking is further complicated for me because I have to use egg replacer and alternative dairies, besides the... -
Pizza is the one thing that I just die for, so I can certainly understand the weakness!!! I have never gotten an "official" diagnosis, but my hubs knows that I cheat when I do something like that. Extended family that we aren't around much doesn't understand as well, but they don't live around me, so it doesn't really matter to me that much. If I find...

ARCHIVED Mother Diagnosed, Wont Go On Diet
jststric replied to ratty89's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
ditto with the others. Just like alot of diabetics that eat too much bread or whatnot, they know what they are doing and making a conscious desicion. Most adult children cannot successfully "tell" their parents anything. It just goes against their grain to listen to their children as if they are children too. Do and live the way you choose and let her... -
ARCHIVED George Foreman Grill And Contamination
jststric replied to chiroptera's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Only my opinion, but if you are able to wash the cooking plates, I would say you would be safe. I have cc issues but I use the same pans, etc and simply wash in hot water and soap and I'm not bothered. -
ARCHIVED Lactose Intolerance Question
jststric replied to ciavyn's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I was lactose intolerant for 15 yrs before all my other intolerances kicked in. And now I have no idea if it's lactose I have issues with or the casein. I try to avoid it, period. I can drink the Lactaid, but prefer soymilk. I eat vegan cheese when I can find it and afford it. It's not great. Haven't found anything that's anywhere CLOSE to the real... -
ARCHIVED Beer Reviews Here
jststric replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Red Bridge in a limited amount. I had never cared for beer at all till right about the time I realized I had a gluten problem and was just finding Blue Moon and Guinness and loving both of those. But, alas, it was short-lived. We frequent an Irish pub and they have the ciders so I've become a "conniseur" of sorts with the brands that are here locally... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy Or Gluten Intolerance?
jststric replied to passionfruit877's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think I'm simply intolerant but of many things, not just wheat/glutens. It usually takes me a day and a half to two days to start feeling symptoms. Sinuses is one of many and I can have some symptoms for as long as a week or so. -
ARCHIVED Barium For Gi Testing Gluten Free?
jststric replied to Diva1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
thank you so much. The only time I've had blisters/lesions is when all my problems started and I was glutened and suffering with the other foods too. I never would have thought about iodized salt. That's all I ever buy. And that's only because that's what my mom always bought, lol. I guess iodine doesn't bother me too much, if that's the case. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Barium For Gi Testing Gluten Free?
jststric replied to Diva1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've wondered this same thing too, as I need to have a colonoscopy done sometime. You mention iodine in your reply here....why? I have many food "intolerances" and most are things that I was truly allergic to as a little child but grew out of. Iodine was one of those things. But it's never bothered me topically and the only times I've had any reactions... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Understand Cc Danger.
jststric replied to Imanistj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think reading the labels to everything you bring into the house is about as good as you are going to get with a purposeful attempt. I have never been bothered by anything topically....only things ingested till just last week. I used some lotion on my legs that has been around our house always. Never gave it a thought. My legs burned and itched like... -
I read somewhere that the beginnings, or gene origins, of gluten issues seemed to have come from the European Anglo-Saxon regions. I'm not much of a history person, but my background came from England, so I'm thinking that may be our ground zero. That COULD be why the European regions seem to know more and have better options in the eateries, and doctors...

This is exactly my point and cause for wondering. When I started having issues, my doctor, a female doctor at that, was clueless and even was convinced and had me tested for STD's! My major symptoms tend to be in very private places. She didn't believe that I and my husband had been completely monogomous with one another and no one else prior in more than...

After listening to the new mammogram recommedations that I feel takes women's healthcare back several steps, I got to thinking about all the times doctors have seemingly not had a clue (or care much) about my issues in the past. I got to wondering if anyone knows if Celiacs or gluten-intolerance has a gender majority? I know there are both men and women...

ARCHIVED Eliminate Soy...what To Do Now?
jststric replied to frustrated09's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've been able to have Lactaid milk just fine and it doesn't have soy in it either. I would be sunk without soy as I have so many other intolerances and its my biggest alternative to dairy replacements. Go to www.kirkmanlabs.com for supplements that are allergen-free...egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free. They have a nice assortment of things like... -
ARCHIVED Mothers (gluten-eaters) Want To Come "help" When Baby Comes?
jststric replied to Expecting in Jan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Boy, I really feel for you! How about fixing some made-ahead gluten-free meals to cut down on their time needed in the kitchen?? You could spin it that it gives THEM more time with the baby!! You could also have a fully-stocked pantry of your needed items. And I agree whole-heartedly with everyone's suggestion to make hubby live gluten-free too while... -
ARCHIVED How Long?
jststric replied to Googles's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
well, to be honest, I could do nuts after I had to give up pb. Same with soy. I can eat soy products and beans, but the soy butter (pb equivalent) seems to both me! I have given up on trying to understand everything because sometimes I just don't make much sense, lol. -
ARCHIVED Getting The Intestines Back Into Good Shape
jststric replied to IChaseFrisbees's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Probiotics helped me alot to get my gut healed before I could get better doing the gluten-free/cf diet. I also discovered I have alot of other foods I needed to eliminate. Being lactose intolerant, finding probiotics I could take was a trick but found allergen-free products at Kirkman Labs. www.kirkmanlabs.com I took a double dose for 2 weeks and began... -
ARCHIVED I Lost It At A Luncheon Yesterday!
jststric replied to Wolicki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
wow, not only was that a pathetic plate, I'm sure it was an embarrasing moment for you too. I agree with pp that said for a large, trained staff they need to get a letter of how unsatisfactory that really was. Did they not have a chicken breast in the kitchen or a steak?? Those don't take long to cook. Pathetic. So sorry! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bakery Michigan
jststric replied to momofcdson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
not sure about cakes, but I do know there is a gluten-free bakery (breads) in Plymouth. I don't recall the name, tho. Sorry. It's in the little downtown area just off the square. You might ask about cakes. -
ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free
jststric replied to new to gluten free's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would say yes. At least it was for me. I still have my moments I throw myself a pity party. Growing up in the south on great food, I had to give up all the fried stuff and since I'm also lactose intolerant, rice, bean, egg and nut intolerant, Had to give up MOST things I absolutely loved. Southerners don't just eat....we have love affairs with our food... -
ARCHIVED Proctor And Gamble Cosmetics
jststric replied to breavenewworld's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think your response was right on and very well put. There were parts of their letter that sounded a bit condascending and insulting as they are trying to "educate" us poor people. It's not their place to educate us...most of us know more than they ever will. Their place is to know all things about their products. And apparently they don't and are trying... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat At These Types Of Places?
jststric replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have learned that the tortilla chips are often a mixture of corn and flour. I learned that simply by reading the ingredients on different bags at the store. So ask if the chips are 100% corn or a mixture. Obviously, things made in flour tortillas are out. You might ask if they can do a certain dish that normally would be made with the flour could be... -
ARCHIVED Questionable Items That I Didn't Question?
jststric replied to CeciliaCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was also going to suggest that you may be intolerant of other foods. A big percentage of gluten-intoleant people are also dairy-intolerant. I have issues with rice also and I know that it's supposedly a "safe" grain in the Celiac world. I would eliminate the dairy for awhile and see if things improve. If not, then try the rice. Don't do both at the... -
they really should start paying me as much as I plug them, lol! I have alot of other intolerances on top of the glutens and had to quit taking all my vitamins, etc. My dr. told me I needed probiotics to help my intestines but being lactose intolerant, I couldn't do the usual yogurts. I FINALLY found Kirkman Labs online. www.kirkmanlabs.com. They have...

ARCHIVED I Need Chocolate!
jststric replied to missybean's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just recently foudn Enjoy Life's "boom CHOCO boom" dark chocolate bars and they are YUMMY!!! I have always been a chocolate snob and have been dancing a happy dance since finding these. They are Dairy-free, Gluten-free, Nut-Free and Soy-Free!!! I found it at Kroger's and a 1.4 oz. bar costs 1.59. I looked them up online and they seem to run about 1...
