ARCHIVED Bone Scan Results
Wolicki replied to Tigercat17's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Take some vitamin c with your iron, too. Helps it absorb. I have osteopenia and osteoporosis. I take Caltrate + D twice a day, and prescripton strength Vit D. I've been getting Reclast injections once annually for the last two years. Even with the Celiac (wasn't dx until 6-09) my bones haven't deteriorated. Since I have absorption issues, the pills weren... -
I would suggest bananas, and toast- if you haven't tried Udi's gluten free, you must. It is divine! I sure do hope you feel better soon!

ARCHIVED Restless Leg Syndrome
Wolicki replied to Wolicki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have had my iron checked. Most indicators are in hte normal range, but my Ferritin is low and iron stores are low. I've been on ferrous sulfate for a month, and will be starting Ferrex in the next few days. Definitely have not seen an improvement with the OTC. What iron supplements are y'all taking? -

For anyone who is taking B12 and had neuropathy, how long did it take to go away completely? -
ARCHIVED Some Interesting Things About B 12
Wolicki posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So,I started having neuropathy pains about 2 months ago, after going gluten-free. THe doctors ruled out most causes, and said it "couldn't possibly" be due to b12 deficiency, because mine was at 450 ish. Well, thanks to my "team of doctors" through the internet, I found out via blood tests that my Methylmalmonic acid (I hope I spelled that right) is high... -
Forgive me for asking a silly question- have you been eating green things? I had that happen when I was eating asparagus.....
-
Yum, I love squash. If you can find Kambocha, add some maple syrup and prepare to be in bliss!

Doesn't it feel like like some big Cosmic Joke sometimes???? Bleh.... Hang in there, it will get better. Load up on veggies when you're starving- asparagus got me through many starved days. Tomorrow will be better

Wolicki-your post has scared me. I do not want to gain weight, I already feel like a complete failure for weighing what I do. I admit I thought that I would lose weight as soon as I went gluten free since I blamed the celiac for all the weight gain. Since that isn't happening, I think it is depressing me. I am so sorry, I did not mean to do that...

I share many of the same frustrations as you. I am gaining weight at a ridiculous rate, with no end in sight on a 1600 calorie a day diet. Bleh! The good news is that it does get better. I am still tweaking everything. I have been gluten-free since July, and I was bloated and gassy and looked preggers for a solid 2 months. (BTW don't take Beano, it...

I had by free T3 and T4 and TSH checked. T3 and 4 were in the normal ranges, but I think one of them was low normal. The antibodies were all in the normal range. My endo is horrible. He grudgingly wrote a scrip for Levoxyl 75 mcg, which according to the package insert is an adequate for someone who weighs 75 pounds He insited there was nothing wrong...

Oh, that's a bummer! I hope you feel better soon! I was lucky that my son asked specifically for gluten-free candies as he went along. Someone gave him a Nestle Crunch, and he said (9 yrs old) "I can't eat this because it has gluten. May I have Starburst instead?" I was very proud of him, and didn't have to take away any of his candy.

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Experienced This?
Wolicki replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with this post. C can cause major hemorroids. I had them for years until I went gluten-free. THey bled a lot! It couldn't hurt to go to the doctor to have it checked out. Check into a community clinic- they have sliding scales for the uninsured. Be well. -
ARCHIVED Vitamins
Wolicki replied to twe0708's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think this is mostly ok. My CRNP told me to take my iron on an empty stomach before bed, WAY after the calcium, tho I am not sure why. Also, take some vitamin C with the Iron (500mg of C). It helps absorb the iron better. -
I haven't done the ED yet myself, but have considered it. My understanding is no nuts, dairy, wheat, corn, eggs, shellfish, nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers), soy, and other things that obviously give you issues. Hope that helps.

So I had my first gluten-free baking extravaganza yesterday to keep us with my boys' appetites. most things turned out great. I made the banana bread recipe from the back of the Arrowhead Mills gluten-free all purpsose baking mix box. I decided that muffins would be better for my boys. I made the recipe as stated, and just put it in muffin tins, and cooked...

Hi all. I am wondering if any of you experienced huge weight gains after gluten-free? I was terribly malnourished at dx, so I knew I would gain a lot of weight, but this is ridiculous! I eat aobut 1600 calories per day: no grains (except for rice cakes), starches, legumes and very little dairy. Mostly lean protein, veg and 1 - 2 servings of fruit. I...

ARCHIVED Confusion
Wolicki replied to Alphawave's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are off gluten, the endoscopy could be a waste of time, unless it's done immediately. If you're gluten-free and feel better, you may have your answer. I had joint pain too. Within a month it was gone. Good luck and welcome to the forum! -

ARCHIVED Ugh So Bummed...
Wolicki replied to Heahterisadork's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sure processed gluten-free food is expensive, but it's best to go natural when transitioning to gluten-free. Many foods are naturally gluten-free- fruits, veg, nuts, lean protein. Most gluten-free breads and sweets are higher calorie/fat than their glutenous counterparts. It doesnt have to cost you an arm and a leg, and you might feel lots better. Give... -
I had very similar experiences in the beginning. I found out I could not eat brocolli, cauliflower, rice, legumes, grains or nut butters. Secondary intolerances, I think. I stay away from all those things now, but PB is back The others may be ok now, but I don't love them enough to try them again. My tummy is almost flat again, and I just don't want...

I'm sorry for all of us in having to deal with doctors who do not understand our disease. And rather tahn admit that they dont know, they tell us it's in our head or there's nothing wrong. I really wish the AMA would make medical students read these threads as a part of their training. Grrr
