  1. Okay, let's see! Q1. Do you really have to watch what shampoo etc you use? A: Yup, I would. While some celiacs report issues with skin contact, I'd say the biggest reason, for myself, has been because every once in a while, I get the suds on my lips/mouth, which means enough can be swallowed to cause a gluten reaction. Same pretty much goes for lipstick...
  2. Wel, first, I would really try to find the gluten-free vitamins, because if you have non gluten-free vitamins, you are still not healing all the way, ya know? I lost weight for QUITE a while after going gluten free. The only thing that helped me some was to eat like a mad woman for a while, lots of carbs/high calorie stuff. I honestly don't know, but my...
  3. I was an asymptomatic celiac, too. A bit overweight, no GI issues at all, no food allergies or issues - they found the celiac disease because I was having a biopsy for something else entirely and asked if they could check for it 'while they were down there' as a relative had it. Very unexpected. For me, 2 weeks was absolutely enough time to start having...
  4. Thank you so much for this reply! I don't know that they have looked at histamine levels for me (I'll have to check - far too many blood tests, LOL), and I will definitely go take a look at some of the foods - red wine definitely does me in, and all canned fish has made me react REALLY badly, so I'm very curious to look into this! Although I just...
  5. I've usually heard 6 weeks, but I know there are differing opinions on it. Hopefully 2 months should be good!

    ARCHIVED New Celiac

For those taking out soy and corn, it's usually just as intensive an 'ingredient hunt' as the hunt for gluten, sadly. For the lactose, some people can't take the lactose, some can't take any milk at all, so that might be an easier start to just avoid milk altogether. The corn - unless you've tried other things and nothing seems to be working, you might want...
  7. For myself, I'd say no. Whether it's organic or not, and whether it has gluten in its ingredient list, says nothing about whether it's contaminated with gluten during processing or packaging, nor does organic necessarily make their labels more up front about potential gluten contamination issues. Now don't get me wrong, we've been going organic primarily...
  8. re: the parasites and different diets affecting them. My understanding is not real great on that, but from what I recall, different parasites take different nutrients from you, so if you eat foods that are higher in the nutrients they are eating, then they spread/reproduce/etc... more. And that messes you up more or causes your symptoms to worsen. My husband...
  9. More fun to add to the pot... In many of his patients, my GI doc was seeing abnormal growth in the stomach linings that he couldn't explain, but then discovered that rats who are fed GMO's develop similar stomach abnormalities. He's been advising his patients to go organic ever since. I was just trying to see if I could find a link to the particular...

    ARCHIVED Corn :(

Woah, I get the anger thing too! Mine is 24-28 hours later, and I'm just FURIOUS. Like, I wake up and i"m angry before I even do anything! I know what you mean about disturbing - it really upsets me that I can feel anger and there is NO reason, and then to realize that a food is causing it? It's just wacked, yeah? I found out mine through a food diary...
  11. Oh man...yeah, could be any of 'em! I'd say, though, first glance? The quinoa could be an issue, as some celiac folk have trouble with that. Maybe amaranth or buckwheat would be better, if you're trying to avoid the grass family? The fish could be a problem too, since it's one of the top 8 allergens. Bison is a meat that is supposed to be very hypo...
  12. Man, boy do I sympathize. Going gluten free with a large family, and trying to pay any bills other than grocery, just boggles my mind! My family (we're one income) got hit with this in the face and didn't have a choice, but at least we were a bit smaller - only 4 of us. But 3 out of the four of us have to be gluten free, so keeping just one person WITH...
  13. Yeah...I hate all those darn glumercials around Christmastime.
  14. If corn is bothering you, I would guess your problem could be the canola oil or the rice noodles. On some corn allergy sites, I've read that canola oil is a corn contamination risk (something about how it's processed, I believe?). Most oils were not, however. White rice is often polished using a corn product, and can be contaminated, too. So if the rice noodles...
  15. Are you still consuming dairy? Many celiacs are lactose intolerant until they've healed up, since the same area of the villi that is damaged is the one that digests lactose. It would definitely cause abdominal pain and gas issues. Might be worth a try. :-) As for how to tell how sensitive you are? It's really nearly impossible to tell unless you are symptoms...
  16. My first thought would be a possible cross-contamination that got missed somewhere. Like, did anybody use your pan before you and get a bit of gluten in it - or soy or any of your other problem foods - and it didn't get completely scrubbed away? Or use your spatula, or touched something that you touched and then that got into your food? Second would be...
  17. I approached it this way: the kids have my (the celiac's) genes. That means they might have the genes that could lead to celiacs. Which means that even if they don't have active celiac now, it could trigger at any time, where they would be getting damage potentially without knowing it, for years, just like I did. So I don't have to KNOW if they have celiac...
  18. Just re: the surgery - it's a good idea to see if you can get any medication that will be needed 'post-surgery' beforehand. And it will, sadly, be up to you to stay on top of the gluten free status of them. Many pharmacies will not check if your drugs are gluten free, even if they have down that you are celiac or allergic to gluten. Many generics are automatically...
  19. I think it could be celiac, allergy, or sensitivity (which there's no test for other than what you're seeing. and which won't likely be believed unless you have an exceptional doctor). My moods improved hugely going off gluten, and I have celiac disease. They improved going off of foods I was diagnosed as having an allergy for. And then they improved even...
  20. Yes, you can get glutened by wine, as I understand it. Some of the wine barrels can be sealed with flour paste, I believe it is? There was a thread on this earlier this year I remember reading...lemme track it down. Here we go! They have some good links for information that should hopefully help you find some safe wine!
  21. Yeah, I was the same: went off gluten, and a whole bunch of foods suddenly messed me up. I feel your pain. But re: the dietician and the suggested diet? The blood type diet has been pretty seriously criticized for its lack of any real supporting evidence, by most Dieticians along with doctors and scientists. I'd recommend checking the diet out...
  22. I've done that a few times, and the times it has turned out all right, I just checked the bins around it. If there was nothing with gluten nearby and it had no 'processed with wheat' issue, I have bought them without trouble. But if it has gluten nearby, I worry that when the nearby bins are used, it might poof in the air and get in that area where the...
  23. Just re: the gluten free aspect of the foods (and so sorry if this was said before - I read most responses, but not all, so I might have missed it!). If any food says gluten free, that doesn't mean it's gluten free enough for you, personally. It means that it has met the legal limit that it needs to be below in order to call itself gluten free. The legal...

    ARCHIVED Can Dh Be Mild?

It's nice to know that someone else has something that sounds similar, in any case!
  25. Hmmm, 4 kids and an unsupportive husband - I can't imagine why you would have any stress or grumpiness, eh? So sorry it's so frustrating, though. But, to give you something to help out, a little, here's one of the better lists of corn ingredients to avoid that I've found, so you don't have to look it up! (although perhaps you already have, in which...
