    ARCHIVED Should I Even Bother?

Hi Steph! Beyond the name, I can identify with quite a bit of your post. I went to so many doctors before figuring out on my own that I am either extremely gluten sensitive or celiac. I am very fit and eat an extremely healthy balanced diet, yet I was having hypoglycemia, dizziness, severe gas and other gastro issues. I went to a GP, endocrinologist...
  2. Yes, stick with the name brand. Doctors and pharmacists are always so quick to point out that the active ingredient in generics is the same. The problem for us celiacs is generally not the active ingredient but all of the inactive ingredients which can be very different from brand to brand. With store brands, you often have to call to see if any of the...
  3. I liked the taste okay, not as creamy as even fat free frozen yogurt. I can kind of see the frozen protein shake thing, but better. I was a bit unsatisfying on the sweet tooth. But it is really low cal, and if I did not have such a reaction, I would continue to buy it.
  4. Perhaps it is just me, but I reacted horribly to Arctic Zero, really bad gluten like symptoms. I know it is labeled gluten free, and I have no idea if it is a CC thing or just ME reacting poorly to something else in the product. Probably the later, but I am curious to hear what others say. I did have so much hope for this product.
  5. Oh I hate how that brand looks almost the same. I have thought to myself many times that people probably do that a lot. Good luck, I am sorry.
  6. I have no idea if soy cheese would work, but you could try. To give it the best chance of being successful, I would shred your own block of soy cheese (just like I recommended with the regular stuff) and not buy the pre-shredded. This is the cutter I bought. It is the tiniest one I could find. Raw, they are bigger than goldfish, but when cooked they...
  7. Caramel Coloring in FOOD must be labeled if it was derived from wheat. In other products, I call just to be on the safe side. But, if it is a food item, labeled gluten free (with caramel coloring) but no mention of wheat, I would not worry.
  8. Are these playgroups at your house or others? I would certainly institute a strict gluten free snacks rule at your home and provide gluten free substitute items. You don't want gluten crumbs in your carpet where your little one is playing. As for at other houses, I would just try to advocate how serious of a disease it is. I like to use the analogy...
  9. I know that malt vinegar is NOT okay, barely malt is usually the source. Make sure to check Beef Broth and BBQ sauce, some are okay and some are not. The other things are usually okay, but not always. Read the ingredients and beyond the obvious gluten ingredients, remember that natural and artificial flavors sometimes contain gluten. If in doubt Google...
  10. Seriously, I wish someone would make them commercially. This is the one product I have not been able to find gluten-free. I make them at home with a little goldfish cookie cutter, but they are very labor intensive. I use a variation on this recipe: Open Original Shared Link But I just use 1 cup of whatever similar rice flour/potato starch...
  11. Hey Anne, we go to hilton head every year too. You are right that they are not very Celiac aware down there. We bought fresh fish at a local fish hut and made it almost every night. It was so good! I do the same things, bring your own cutting board (I also bring my own salad spinner, which can double as a strainer) and clean everything down. First...
  12. Last time I checked, Clartin is fine, EXCEPT the reditabs. There is a starch in them that they can not confirm is gluten free from their supplier.
  13. I also think Schar's rice and corn blend is great. The texture is just like (I remember) traditional pasta and it tastes good too.
  14. Well, I eat Amy's Bistro Burgers almost everyday with no problems. That said, I often will mildly react to many brands of gluten-free pizza or bread, perhaps it is that some "gluten free" grains can be CC at the source? It could be the yeast, it could be to much dairy that day, it could be a whole host of things that accumulate into a little reaction...
  15. You know, I read lists like that and I just can't help but thinking why in the world are they putting gluten ingredients in something like (non-flavored) dry roasted walnuts? That is insane. Thanks for posting that!
  16. Interesting thread. If I see malt listed I have always assumed it is from barley unless specially stated otherwise. It sounds like Unilever thinks the same way. That said, I have never seen malt from rice in any product, I would love to know what had rice malt in it? That sounds yummy.
  17. Buying a new grill is a little extreme, especially if you have a nice (i.e. expensive) one already, but buying new grates that go on the grill is certainly not. Another option is to use a marble BBQ stone for your food or a ceder plank with a stainless cooking tray.
  18. Yeah, basically don't do it. I know it can be hard to try not to hurt someone's feelings, but you don't want to get glutened, and you will 9 times out of 10. In my case, everyone now knows I always bring my own food everywhere. But if I was going somewhere new, I call ahead (or have my DH if he knows them better) and explain that my son and I have severe...
  19. Well, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Do I think a Celiac could eat European flour? NO. That is hogwash. Do I think non-hybridized wheat has less gluten? Oh yes, probably very true. But it is too late for us afflicted people now. I think it very likely that the high gluten content in wheat flour grown in the country today along with all of the...
  20. Yes, this is a very old thread. And I don't think MARS even makes the crispy M&Ms anymore? I sure have not seen them around.
  21. I have been using Tom of Maine's Whole Care Gel lately and really like it. For me his Gel toothpaste are much better than the regular pastes. They will say out right that there toothpastes are gluten free, at least they did when I called just a few weeks ago.
  22. Just curious, which type of Sensodyne were/are you using?
  23. I just followed the link and it says the survey is closed. Bummer.
  24. Well, I believe I read on this board that Sensodyne is the only toothpaste that does have gluten (wheat) it in, so yes, I would say that maybe the main problem. That said, I personally would be very very uncomfortable with my DH or anyone else baking bread in my kitchen. Flour is so dusty and can go anywhere so easily. You can touch the cabinet door...
  25. I just looked on their website I could not find such a list, do you happen to know where it is? Thanks!
