  1. You don't need a bread machine to make good gluten free bread because it doesn't need all that kneading and it only needs one rise. You just mix it all, let it rise in the loaf pan and bake it. A really EASY book that I'm using is Gluten Free Baking Classics by Annalise G. Roberts. She has a few flours you use and you make mixes up ahead. There are 3...
  2. A little harsh there. The OP stated clearly that drinking is not a regular activity for them, but everyone wants to be included in a celebration. We lose so much food culture and we lose our freedom to eat out and eat at parties safely. It's hard to go into a social situation and not know what you can and can't have. It wasn't at all about a "need to drink...
  3. Yeah, pretty funny that wine coolers are really fruit flavored beer! I would just drink wine, but I love wine. If wine had gluten I would cry my eyes out.
  4. This confuses me. You are saying that he's so sick and you want him tested for celiac but then you are saying that he's fine with all foods except wheat, potatoes and squash. I don't think he would be so sick and so thin if all the other foods were fine for him. He gets sick if you give him the supplements that the ped told you to use, so he IS reacting to...
  5. thank you for your advice it helped alot

  6. Dulce where did you go? You were so upset about not getting answers and now you have tons. I hope you come back so we can continue to help you through this.
  7. An elimination diet might be a really good way to go. It's a pain for a couple of months but it really can pinpoint foods.
  8. The thought of anesthesia and a biopsy for my 5 year old just kills me. I want to cry thinking about it. I guess we can start with blood and maybe even do Enterolab first. I know it's controversial but it's a place to start and it's not invasive. I don't mind just doing the diet, but since it's a lifelong commitment I want him to have a diagnosis if...
  9. Have you had regular allergy testing for food allergies? It's not that reliable either, but there are plenty of food allergies that do show up on it. Maybe you are allergic to something else.
  10. Well now you have some big decisions. ALL the testing is somewhat unreliable and false negatives are common. Will you eat gluten and do a biopsy? That would be the next step. I know you really do not want to have celiac or do this diet, but I urge you to keep looking and if all tests come up negative try the diet. It's not worth being sick for years on...
  11. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with celiac and I think my 5 year old son has it. We've known he has wheat and dairy intolerance for a long time but were told, like I was, that we could have it in moderation. Of course gluten never came up as an issue. I am nervous to deal with doctors for my son and the ignorance that I dealt with my whole life of being misdiagnosed...
  12. I just reread my post and wanted to clarify about adding foods. Give him one food, plus the formula for 3 or 4 days and then add a new food every 3 or 4 days. It will take awhile to get him onto a varied diet, but the formula is enough for him right now if you put him on the non allergenic one. Formula or breastmilk is the main food source the first year...
  13. HUGS Mommy! I know what you are going through. My son was a very sick baby but I was breastfeeding so I did an elimination diet. I had to cut out lots of foods. We thought he outgrew it but now he
  14. Yes switch toasters!!! Check all your beauty products too. I had wheat in my hand soap, hand lotion, shampoo, conditioner and face lotion that I was using everyday. I can't help but have the shampoo and conditioner run down my face in the shower and I know soaps and lotions get on my food when I eat or prep food. I'm on week 3 but I only delved into my...
  15. So? What did they say? You've got us in suspense here!
  16. The reason I think you should have him evaluated is to find out if there truly is a behavior problem or if he's just being a normal 5 year old boy on the more active end of the spectrum, NOT to put him on medication. I would NEVER put a child on ADHD or ADD meds unless I had exhausted other means using diet and behavioral therapy first, and only if the problem...
  17. I'm a former teacher and I did teach kindergarten in addition to other grades. Before you make drastic dietary changes, you might want to consider a few things. First of all, school standards are ridiculous now. Kindergarten isn't what it was even 5 years ago. The push for more more more has made it so that K kids are expected to sit still for longer periods...
  18. There is a stomache virus going around. I thought I got glutened and then my kids both came down with it.
  19. Lots of people don't know that white bread is made of wheat. A few days ago the In N Out manager was assuring me that there was no wheat in their buns. Oops.
  20. Scotty, I am so sorry you are suffering!!! You will find support on this board. Have you sought counseling to deal with your grief? You know, having a diagnosis like this makes you go through the stages of grief just like if you had a death of a loved one. You need to talk through your grief and process it in order to move on. HUGS to you and I will pray...
  21. I know what you're saying, but practically speaking, it's not really much different. You can get the same symptoms from a food allergy reaction, and allergies can be even more dangerous because of anaphylaxis. I do use the word celiac disease so they know what it is, but my main goal is not to get glutened and let them know it's serious. I also don...
  22. Most people have some sort of health issue with something. I am only 3 weeks into the diet, but I figure most likely I will still have asthma, allergies, and hypothyroidism. Yes they can be related and exacerbated by untreated celiac, but those are diseases in and of themselves that I have come down with and they need to be addressed separately. They run...
  23. I wanted to add that you really can't fault a waiter or chef for ignorance. It's their job to learn to prepare and serve food. They aren't a doctor or dietitian. It's our job to educate them. I think it's important to use the word allergy because that resonates and it's fast. When a customer told me that they had an allergy my ears perked up and I had...
  24. I think to threaten a lawsuit is a very BAAADDDD idea for a number of reasons. First of all they don't have to provide you with anything. They cook what they cook and you can choose not to eat there. You don't have a "right" to eat at someone's restaurant the way you want to eat and the things you want or need to eat. Second of all, all allergic and celiac...
