  1. have you had thyroid blood tests, or do you just think it might be thyroid? I would strongly urge you to have your TSH, free T3 and free T4 tested. Brain fog, memory loss and your other symptoms could be Grave's disease. I've had it. It's no fun. And could be deadly if it remains untreated.
  2. if the biopsy comes up positive, then you have Celiac disease. Blood work can come up negative for a number of reasons, which is why they still have to do biopsies.
  3. quite a lot of chocolate is produced on or in facilities that also manufacture wheat products. So while cocoa or chocolate itself is not glutenous, the end product may be cross contaminated. Some chocolate makers use barley as a sweetener (Lindt) and won't swear that even the candy that doens't contain it are gluten free. At least one chocolate...
  4. you may have other food intolerances that are causing the bloating and discomfort. Have you tried eliminating the other "usual suspects" like dairy, and soy, etc? Are you sure you're completely gluten free? Are you reading ingredients and allergy information on every food label? How about your shampoo, body lotion, cosmetics, pet foods etc?
  5. I take 500mg of magnesium every day. I tried only 250mg but it wasn't quite enough for me. I think maybe as I heal more I might be able to lower the dose again, but it's so nice to be able to go without any struggle I also drink usually about 3 to 4 litres of water every day.
  6. not all of the Hormel Naturals are gluten free, but the ones that are, are labeled as such. I think the roasted chicken, and the sandwich size salami is *not* gluten free. I usually buy the smoked ham, roasted turkey, and the pepperoni slices. They are gluten free. Just read the labels. Need to get into the habit anyway.
  7. why low fat? Fat really has a bum rap and is actually healthy for you. Except transfats. Transfats are bad. And your potato chips are probably full of them. The best way to kick bad carb cravings is cold turkey. You can't slay a well fed dragon I always say. But it's best to keep yourself well fed. Which means don't let yourself get hungry....
  8. but we wouldn't be able to do mouth-to-mouth because they're all contaminated.
  9. If it were me, I would print out the Celiac pamphlet that is available with the basic information about what the disease is, and it explains that Celiacs cannot eat *anything with wheat barley or rye". And I would give it to the person who orders the pizza, and another one to the git who said "it's organic, so you can eat it" Most non-Celiacs with...
  10. Lycopene, it's only been a month and a half since you went completely gluten free, so you're still healing, and that's going to take a while. Perhaps months even. But every day you will feel better. A little bit. One thing to keep in mind is you may want to just stay away from packaged and manufactured foods entirely for a few months at least. Whole...
  11. what did you do with your kitchen pans that you cook with? Did you wash them with soap and water? Scrub them with a scouring pad and some detergent? I don't see how the BBQ grill should be any different Take the BBQ brush to it, then clean it in the sink with some hot water and dish detergent. Should do the trick, same as your kitchen pans.
  12. There is not one Celiac here who will agree with you that your son's behavior is "not acceptable". Not only is it acceptable, but it is totally normal behavior for anyone of any age. Telling him that his emotions are not acceptable is telling him that he's even more wrong, broken, weird, a freak, than he was with just the celiac diagnosis. The disease...
  13. read ingredients labels on everything you plan to put in your mouth. Most mass produced candy unfortunately is going to have either wheat or barley in it. Or will be cross contaminated from being produced on the same machinery as something else with wheat or barley. Your symptoms could last up to a week or more. If you have constipation with your symptoms...
  14. did you know that the current "healthy" level of cholesterol is a lot lower than it used to be? Lower since the invention of statin drugs! Dietary cholesterol (eggs, butter, etc) do not contribute to blood cholesterol levels. BODY fat does, and your body stores fat when you eat more fuel than it needs. The western diet is primarily carbs (look at...
  15. what sorts of foods do you generally eat every day? Are you eating a lot of pre-packaged foods? Or are you a whole natural foods kind of person? Gluten free junk food is still junk food. It's difficult to help you if we don't know what you're eating now though. I found that before I went gluten free and to a whole foods diet, that I always always...
  16. I'm a low-carber, no sugar, gluten free, mainly whole natural foods breakfast this morning was a pumpkin flax muffin with cream cheese, coffee with real cream and 1 litre of water snack was slices of Hormel Naturals ham, with some cucumber lunch was a tin of tuna, HUGE garden salad, with ranch dressing afternoon snack was peanuts and a piece of...
  17. Next month I am moving back to Ontario and will be driving from North Carolina with my dog. I just ordered myself a bunch of snacks for the road. I don't normally eat packaged foods, mainly because I eat whole natural foods, but also because I'm also sugar free, and a low-carber. I just can't find a whole lot of low carb gluten free packaged foods...
  18. easy "ploughman's lunch" sliced deli meats sliced cheese pickles roll a slice of meat and cheese around the pickle, enjoy Add any veggies or fruits to fill in the corners.
  19. Flax!
  20. Lindt uses barley as a sweetener in some of their chocolates. Last time I was home I found at Metro some nice dark chocolate bars.
  21. I use stickers to seal envelopes now, rather than lick them. I've tried to get the dogs to lick them, but they won't do it! As for skin care and hair care products with gluten, quite a lot of people also have skin rashes caused by Celiac disease, and/or can react to topical gluten if you have an open cut. Personally, I do not have dermatitis...
  22. My new favourite chocolate is Endangered Species 80% cocoa Certified gluten free, kosher and vegan! Gluten free alternative foods are incredibly high in refined carbs. If you stay away from manufactured and processed foods, stick with whole, natural foods, include healthy fats, protiens, and lots of veggies, you'll feel better, and will lose weight...
  23. Word of mouth is the most effective form of advertising. If it were me, I would most certainly not only remove the restaurant name from your lists, but I would tell everybody I know, not just Celiacs, but EVERYbody, that it is not a friendly restaurant. Period. And I wouldn't have included a tip. So what if no one ordered a meal? You still personally...
  24. When I did the gluten challenge I had been mostly gluten free for about 9 months or so doing the Atkins diet. Up until then, I'd been diagnosed with IBS, that never got any better no matter how much fibre I ate. As soon as I started eating gluteny foods, I was immediately in pain, bloated, foggy brain, cranky, all over achey, gained about 10 pounds...
  25. my post was not in the least mean spirited. That would imply that I inteded to be mean to you, which I most certainly did not. I did however intend as mushroom said, to suggest to you that rather than dwell on what you cannot have, focus on what you can have. And if you have doctors and nutritionists looking at you like you're a poor lost soul with...
