  1. What sort of reaction do you have? Have you been tested for diabetes or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease? I have a low tolerance for sugars and carbohydrates. It's been pretty easy for me to stick to a fairly low carbohydrate diet, as well as gluten free. If I eat refined cane sugar, or other high sugar content sweeteners it makes me nauseous. I don...

    ARCHIVED What Now?

did the new symptoms start immediately after starting the pro-biotics, or sometime after? It could be additional food intolerances, or it could be a virus, or it could be a low grade bacterial food poisoning even. Something you're eating is not agreeing with you. Take a good look at everything, re-read labels, and maybe initially just stay away from...
  3. any restaurant has the option to refuse service to anyone for any reason at all, including not being able to ensure you a safe dining experience, or even if they just don't like the t-shirt you're wearing. I don't see a problem with that at all. I'd rather that they admit they can't accomodate you than have them try and fail and make me sick.

Designate a space in the kitchen and/or eating area as a strictly Gluten Free Zone. Heck, I'd even get some yellow caution tape and cordon it off for yourself! Family should not be so horrible to you and grumble that you're being difficult. It's your health, and if they properly understood the consequences of you being glutened, they should be nicer and...
  5. Just another example of uneducated restaurant owners/chefs thinking that gluten is only a problem with wheat. A friend of mine even went to a holistic practitioner who claims to specialise in food intolerances/allergies and told her she has a gluten sensitivity, but barley and rye were ok, just to stay away from wheat!
  6. Yep, I had my thyroid levels checked already (as mentioned in first post) to check to make sure my Grave's disease hadn't recurred. Everything was within normal ranges, and no Grave's antibodies. I have not had any medications to trigger this either. No anti-biotics, no anti-virals, nothing. AFTER this all started my GP gave me a script for Serc which...
  7. thanks, but the ENT already ruled out water in my ears and Meniere's disease.
  8. I live in Whitby, ON. I've been gluten free since December 2009, and moved to Whitby May 2010. I know there's a gluten free bakery here, but I also stay away from refined sugars and high carb options, so not too many baked goods (or manufactured gluten-free foods) unless I make them myself with nut flours and xylitol or eryrithritol or stevia. ...
  9. I'm more partial to the low-carb survival kit personally, and you need protien sources just as much or more than rice IMO! You need cans or vacuum packs (vacuum packs weigh less) of tuna and/or salmon, dried meats, packages of dried beans (less expensive, more meals than canned, and lighter to carry if you have to evacuate!), packages of nuts, trail mix...
  10. Yeah, I never understood suing a restaurant for being glutened or coming into contact with an alergen. Honestly, if you're eating in a public restaurant, you're taking your chances. I've been incredibly lucky since I was diagnosed and have not had any mishaps at all. However, I *always* contact a restaurant ahead of time to find out if they have any gluten...
  11. Googles, just let your hosts know that because you're driving, you can bring a cooler with you and bring your own foods. If they are planning a meal or two to include you with any of the pre- or post-wedding parties, then give them a list of foods that you absolutely cannot eat, and a list of foods that most non-Celiacs don't think about reading labels on...
  12. Thank you for all of your suggestions, I will start googling I had all the usual allergy tests before I went for the Celiac tests, everything came up negative response, so I'm fairly certain it's not allergies. Additional intolerances maybe, but not allergies. I did test as sodium deficient right after my Celiac dx, (along with vitimin and other...
  13. I was diagnosed Celiac in Dec. 2009, and went gluten free at that very moment. I've been glutened only twice since, and I don't cheat, I won't even eat anything that the label says "may contain" because I have such a severely painful gut reaction. Last May I moved back to Canada (Whitby ON) from the US and it took me a while to find a doctor. I've...
  14. if you suspect that you have an auto-immune thyroid disease, you really should ask for a referral to an endocrinologist who understands the disease and can treat it properly. A GP will not understand the complexities of all the numbers.
  15. have you had your thyroid tested? Celiac disease often goes hand in hand with thyroid auto-immune diseases. Grave's Disease (hyper-thyroid) will cause all of the symptoms you are experiencing. It may not be food related at all, I strongly urge you to see an endocrinologist asap. Grave's disease can be very dangerous.
  16. Fats and protiens will have you feeling sated and full longer than eating complex carbs. Contrary to popular belief, you Do Not need complex carbs to be sports minded and active. Your muscles are made of protien, not potatoes. To build/mend muscles you need protien. And healthy fats are an excellent source of energy. Turn your food pyramid upside...
  17. I would have sent it back and stressed "please do not just take the croutons off and bring the same plate back to me. Make a fresh plate". Even if you have no noticable symptoms, you are still damaging your small intestine every time you injest gluten. You are not being impolite by insisting that you leave the restaurant in good health. If they serve...
  18. Personally, I would avoid all fast food places entirely. They're not really set up for gluten free preparation (except a couple of pizza chains in Canada now, not sure about the US). I also stear clear of all buffets, and breakfast/pancake places (Denny's, IHOP, etc). Yes, they have gluten free options but it's all cooked on the same griddle, and for some...
  19. If it's family, or close friends, I can't understand why they'd be offended if you a-bring your own or b-request that they scrub ever surface of their kitchen before they prepare your meal. Afterall, if they're family or close friend, then they're supposed to love you, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want you to get sick from whatever they feed you. ...
  20. I would go and just not eat anything. I hardly think if the host is a true friend that s/he would want you to get sick by eating foods you can't have! Go, have a good time, spend some money.
  21. I recently had 3 days in a hotel in downtown Toronto for FanExpo, and we were on a budget, so we took a cooler rather than try to find restaurants. We didn't have a microwave in our room. We took a nice big bowl of salad, sliced deli meats, hard boiled eggs, cheese strings, Doctor's gluten free CarbRite snack bars, macadamia nuts, peanuts, peanut butter...
  22. That's awesome, and good to know! I wonder if they can do gluten free *and* low carb though?
  23. If you have one AI, it is very likely that you can develop, or already have others. I think a lot of us you'll find here have varying collections I have Celiac, Grave's Disease (in remission!), and fibromyalgia. These are the dx'd ones, there could be more!
  24. If you have Celiac disease, you likely have more than just vit D deficiency! With the malabsorption that comes along with Celiac, you are likely dificient in pretty much everything. I had all mine tested right after my Celiac dx and *everything* was really low. I also find that when I get low on sodium I get dizzy. A home-made "sport" drink usually...
  25. Some brands are, some are not. Read the ingredients label and allergy warnings.
