  1. one book I have says that Celiac disease is gluten intolerance gone horribly wrong, so I figured if you have gluten intolerance and continue to eat gluten, you may at some point end up with Celiac disease. I did the gluten challenge last year (painful though it was!) because is wanted the definite diagnosis. One, because my husband is a jerk and wouldn...
  2. the hiatal hernia can cause the adic reflux too. Open Original Shared Link A small hernia (such as you said you have) may not give you symptoms of reflux, but it can still be there I think. I have a "medium" hiatal hernia, and I kind of liken it to a lapband If I eat too much, it causes a lot of discomfort in my stomach, so I have to eat...
  3. except possibly the ones who have hyper thyroid and are hot all the time.
  4. yes, if you take a calcium supplement, you should also take a magnesium supplement. The magnesium is more likely to help relax muscles than calcium is. And calcium without magnesium can cause constipation, which will just add to your pain. Before I went gluten free my periods were incredibly painful, now, not so much.
  5. why do you lie to your friends? What kind of life is that? If they are your friends, then they need to know, and they need to understand your disease. And they can't do that if you hide it from them. I know I don't particularly like it when a so-called friend lies to me about anything. Friends should be able to trust each other.
  6. My dogs currently are eating Nurture Healthy Harvest made by Sunshine Mills Open Original Shared Link Their website really sux, but the food is pretty good! They also get Purina One canned food. Their favourite is the Salmon & Brown Rice. They each get a spoonful or so on their kibble, and my Saint Bernard gets a spoonful to take her pain medicine...
  7. excuse me for saying so, but perhaps your junk food diet is part of the problem.
  8. What she said! Holy carp, talk about Mommie Dearest! You can live quite happily and healthily without gluten. And, from my own persoal experience, you can also live quite happily without your toxic parent!
  9. I would also suggest thyroid issues, and/or electrolyte imbalance (low sodium, postassium, magnesium) make an appointment with your doctor to have your TSH, T3 and T4 tested, but in the meantime make sure you get at least 1/2 tsp of salt per day (read food labels! mst packaged foods are FULL of sodium), plus a magnesium supplement and half an avocado per...
  10. practice tying up your food in a tree before you go! That's the trickiest part to backpacking. It's got to be high enough up that a bear standing on it's hind legs can't reach it, (and remember, black bears can climb trees!) and it's got to be a sturdy enough bag/canister that a raccoon can't climb into it and eat all your food while you're asleep!
  11. so sorry to go off topic. Won't happen again.
  12. wheat germ oil is common in shampoos and cosmetics and lotions. I tossed out quite a lot of products. You're looking for the same things in your cosmetics etc that you're looking for on food labels. Wheat, barley, and rye. If they're listed in the ingredients, don't buy it.
  13. I dunno, but they usually suggest that you switch to whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, etc etc etc...when in reality, flax seed meal and psyllium are much better options for bulk fibre! I guess they're just not very imaginative when it comes to food.
  14. And in the US the first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup! So I wouldn't call it a particularly friendly condiment in either country. Not that HFCS is not gluten free, but it is harmful to liver health in general, and there are other brands that do not have it. I can't wait to move back to Canada where HFCS is not so all pervasive as it is...
  15. have you ever had your thyroid levels checked? There are 2 autoimmine thyroid diseases that commonly go in tandem (one or the other) with Celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis causes hypo-thyroid. Grave's disease causes hyper-thyroid. I had Grave's disease (currently in remission) and suffered quite a lot of muscle wasting because of it. I...

  17. I will third that, and say you are not doing yourself any favours by starving yourself all day long then eating only supper. Your metabolism slows during the day because it is in starvation mode, it thinks there is a famine because you have not broken your fast (that's the origins of the word breakfast btw) when you wake up, and then you still don't eat...
  18. wow, that's why I haven't had a hangover in a while! I haven't had any beer in simply yonks! btw, I'm waiting on someone to distill some chocolate tequila. If anybody ever finds any, please do let me know.
  19. Are you eating whole natural foods, or processed and manufactured foods? Are you eating *enough*? Are you drinking plain water, or processed and manufactured drinks? Have you checked everything in your house for gluten? Including flavoured tea, coffee, shampoo, hair products, cosmetics, soaps, pet foods, lipbalm etc? Are you a "shared household" or did...
  20. here's the WebMD info on hiatal hernia Open Original Shared Link some of your symptoms also sound a bit like diabetes (tingling extremeties, water retention) have you ever been tested? If not, you *really* don't want to try the formula without being tested first. If you have diabetes starving yourself with the forumula could have severe repercussions...
  21. when I went gluten free, I felt improvement almost immediately, however I didn't feel entirely "better" for a couple of months (like really recently!). Whether that was from minor cross contamination or the healing process, or a combination I don't know. If there is damage to your intestine, it will take a while to heal. And you may have secondary...
  22. now that you're gluten free, any further testing for Celiac disease will turn up negative. You have to have it in your system for the tests to be positive if you have the disease. Based on your improvement on a gluten free diet however, your doctor *may* be able to give you a definitive diagnosis. BUT, because you've also eliminated a lot of other...
  23. Have you been tested for any thyroid disease along with the Celiac tests? As Celiac can cause malnutrition, and malnutrition can cause your hair to fall out and get thinner, it is highly likely a cause and effect thing. However, thyroid disease can also cause hair loss, and there are 2 autoimmune disease that can go hand-in-hand with Celiac. There is...
  24. yeap, I always had constipation to the point that I would pray to get food poisoning just so I would get some diarrhea to get rid of it all! Every doctor I ever saw said it was IBS, and told me to "eat more whole grain fibre" and take a laxative. Which of course, just made it worse. For the 5 years or so before I went gluten free, I was bleeding from...
