ARCHIVED University of Chicago's Celiac Impact Newsletter, April 2016
psawyer replied to cyclinglady's topic in Publications & Publicity
My diagnosis, in the summer of 2000, was based solely on biopsy results. The blood tests were not yet available where I live. My health improved dramatically when I went gluten-free. I see no reason to doubt my diagnosis, and I am certainly not going to to a gluten challenge to see if antibodies develop. Biopsies are expensive, and make lots of money for... -
ARCHIVED Dextrose and Maltextrin
psawyer replied to TracyButler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Both of those are highly refined and contain no detectable gluten, even if the original source is wheat. But, as mentioned, if wheat IS the source, that must be disclosed on the label (at least in Canada and the US). -
ARCHIVED Certified gluten-free processed in a wheat facility.... what?!
psawyer replied to kellibee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What Karen and Doug said. If it is certified gluten-free it is, and has been verified so by a third party who tests. -
ARCHIVED Please share cross contamination stories
psawyer replied to jddh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So they don't add any gluten ingredients, but don't test for gluten. This is the case with the vast majority of safe products marketed to the mainsteam consumer who does not care about gluten, and doesn't want to pay extra to have the product tested. The manufacturer won't make a gluten-free claim since they don't test--they are avoiding legal liability... -
ARCHIVED Gluten free dog food?
psawyer replied to alexa dimoulis's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Um, you might want to Google Blue Buffalo. You will learn that what they claim about their ingredients, and what their ingredients actually are, are, well, different. One reference Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Is Big Boy Hamburger Sauce Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to sella's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm not sure what you are referring to as "Hamburger Sauce," but I don't see something by the name on the list. So, I would say no, but not for the same reason as manasota. "We cannot guarantee" is legal boiler plate which you should expect to see frequently, and which should not alarm you. I expect to see it and pay little or no attention... -
beware ARCHIVED DO NOT eat at the Beverly Hills Hilton!!!
psawyer replied to Mamamcdrama's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I am so sorry to hear that you were ill. Celiac Disease has many, many symptoms, and vomiting is certainly one of them, but I have never heard of vomiting BLOOD as a symptom. It may have been something other than gluten that was the culprit. And yes, an apology is an admission of guilt that could be used against them in court in a lawsuit.- 7 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Lipstick
psawyer replied to Susan123's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry for the late response. I have not been on for a while due to things in my personal life. Every credible source that I have ever seen lists tocopherols as gluten-free. In the Canadian Celiac Association's Pocket Dictionary, tocopherols are on the list of safe food additives. That is good enough for me. Here is another source Open Original... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Lipstick
psawyer replied to Susan123's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, you can consider me to be a reliable source or not, as you may choose. Tocopherols are highly processed and purified, and contain no detectable gluten, regardless of the original source. -
ARCHIVED I'm back After Being Gone For Awhile
psawyer replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Vicky, and welcome back. So sorry to hear this sad news, but I hope that returning to the gluten-free world makes things better for you. {{hug}} -
Not there for me either. The new "Unread Content" just is not a substitute. Sigh.

ARCHIVED Lindt Chocolate's Definitive Response Of 2007
psawyer replied to Leonesse's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is a very old thread, and the information in it is from at least six years ago. It may be out of date, and I would not rely on any of it. -
ARCHIVED Is there a way to search this site without the ads on side?
psawyer replied to tntntwins's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I may be old school, but I don't seem to have any trouble with scrolling opening ads. They are there, but I just make sure the pointer is on the forum content instead of the ads before hitting page up/down or rolling the wheel on my mouse. As Scott said, this is a free site because of the ads. Advertisers pay to keep it running for all of us at no charge... -
ARCHIVED Werther's original caramels
psawyer replied to 1398-Days's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glucose syrup is highly refined. Here is the Canadian Celiac Association's comment on the subject in their ingredient dictionary: -
In over 15 years gluten-free, I have not seen an analgesic, whether brand name or private label, that contained gluten. Gluten in medicine is quite rare, but if you have a problem with corn, that is a whole different problem. Corn starch is the most common filler in tablets. Corn starch has a longer shelf life and is less expensive than wheat starch. at least...

ARCHIVED Vanilla extract -Back Bay Trading
psawyer replied to Stacy0w's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Vanilla extract is gluten free. Distilled alcohol is gluten-free--anything distilled will be gluten-free. The gluten molecule is too large to pass through the distillation process. -
ARCHIVED Pepperoni
psawyer replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten in pepperoni is possible, but in my experience, quite rare. I have heard this, but have never found a confirmed case (no pun intended, but if there is gluten it is likely in the casing, not the sausage itself). Hormel (available in he US) and Piller's (in Canada) are definitely gluten-free. Both are so labeled on the package. -
ARCHIVED Yeast Extract
psawyer replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Rick, and welcome to the forum. My position on this question has not changed. The dietitian you reference has limited credibility in my books because of over-the-top claims like this one. The numbers cited are from Marmite, a product known to be made from spent yeast from the brewing process ("brewers yeast"). We know that isn't safe for us. Further... -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac, Negative Blood Test
psawyer replied to kitty-el's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jeepasch, I think you have the process backwards. The blood tests are used for screening, and a positive result will likely cause the doctor to order the endoscopy for confirmation. Once damage has been confirmed by the biopsy, a diagnosis cane be made based on that alone. False negatives can occur with both the blood test and the endoscopy, particularly... -
Paper Plates?
psawyer replied to albauer94's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It does not matter what the animal eats. The meat is absolutely gluten-free. Same goes for milk from any ruminants, including cows. Gluten can not pass from the digestive tract into the tissue or the milk. There have been suggestions that in humans gluten can pass into breast milk, but we have a very different digestive tract. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free At Fast Food Place?
psawyer replied to Fenrir's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That is a serious violation of McDonalds rules and, if it happened (and was detected) more than once, it would get a corporate store manager fired and would be cause for termination of a franchise. The fries are a signature product that must be untainted. Just saying. If you don't already know, potato products (fries, hash browns) are fried in dedicated fryers... -
ARCHIVED Our Eloise In Uk For Organ Transplant This Pm
psawyer replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
To add to my post just above, we have a very compassionate and caring community here at celiac.com who help each other. It is troubling to me, and I am sure to many others here, when an outsider tries to take advantage of us. But please continue to participate and help. I have been a member here for more than ten years, and a moderator for more than eight... -
ARCHIVED Our Eloise In Uk For Organ Transplant This Pm
psawyer replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The moderation team would like to let everyone know that a recent member was posing as multiple family members of someone with serious medical issues. This person was not being genuine and stole information and pictures from other websites. We have learned that this person has been using the same story on other websites to solicit money and gifts. We would... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Label With Less Than 20 Parts Per Million
psawyer replied to Vanilla Gorilla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A lot of unnecessarily complicated arithmetic can be trotted out when it comes to parts per million (ppm). Even if the content of everything you ate was 19 ppm, you would not ingest a level believed harmful on a normal diet. Two items at 5 ppm are the sum of the two items, still at 5 pm overall.
