ARCHIVED Cooking Class
StephanieL replied to GwenO's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Teach her now not to take anyones word for it and to ask for labels or not accept it! Hope she isn't suffering too bad -
The reactions you are speaking of (GI), if those are your symptoms it doesn't sound like an IgE allergy which is what those tests are looking for. Those tests are about inaccurate at best (about 50% of the positives are false positives). A food log really would be your best bet. Very detailed including every ingredient and times you are things and any...

Why did you have testing? Unless you've had a reaction it isn't recommended to test for things. What kinds of reactions were you having that you had testing done?

ARCHIVED Toddlers Gluten Challenge Blood Work Igg Over 100
StephanieL replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My guess is yes. They pretty much ALWAYS want one. You don't have to do it though. Some Dr's are willing to write a dx based on blood work and the resolution of symptoms when gluten-free. Was there any other blood work done? -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease + Mastocytosis + Leaky Gut + Normal Food Allergies?
StephanieL replied to misslasagna's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Unless you know exactly what you are reacting to, allergy testing isn't recommended. A really good and detailed food log can help determine a lot of stuff. Testing for IgE or 'true' allergies isn't 100% accurate. It's more about 50/50 for a positive result meaning that a positive test in the absence of an actual reaction is only 1/2 the time going to be... -
ARCHIVED Cooking Class
StephanieL replied to GwenO's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Different parents deal with it differently. While I would not feel comfortable with my kid eating anything from the class I would see if perhaps one or two times they would be willing to alter a recipe for the class to work with alternative cooking for sure! I would send in a batch from home for kiddo to eat if they did that or send disposable bowls/baking... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take For Blood Levels To Drop To Normal Range?
StephanieL replied to amcclain32's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you taken a look at all at thyroid issues? My DS's ttG's were very high still after 2 years. We looked into thyroid issues and found that was an issue (common in people with Celiac as well). Once on synthroid, DS's ttG's FINALLY came down. They did bounce back up so we're trying to figure that out but they are *almost* normal now after 3 years gluten... -
ARCHIVED Problems With The School, Hipaa Release
StephanieL replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Before you start jumping through all the hoops of the school, I really would call the OCR to verify if you need to sign away his HIPPA rights. What authority does the school have to determine if he's to sick? Are they all M.D.'s with the training to make that determination? -
ARCHIVED Celiac It Is

ARCHIVED Problems With The School, Hipaa Release
StephanieL replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Did you call the OCR and ask if they can require you sign a HIPPA form? I know we've talked about it before but I ca't remember. Sorry it's still such a pain -

Any IgE allergy can cause anaphylaxis. A past reaction is NO indicator of future reactions! -
ARCHIVED How R Schools Helping Kids W/celiac?
StephanieL replied to heymom45's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you want the school to take it seriously and it is a public school in the US, a 504 plan is a great way to go! It is a blueprint of how to deal with things so everyone is on the same page! It spells things out so there isn't any question about what needs to be done to keep them safe. Different people ask for different accommodations but some things that...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Allergic To Gluten And Common Gluten Free Ingredients
StephanieL replied to dtmichiels's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A positive blood test is about 50/50 on being an actual allergy. If you don't have Epi pens, it isn't an allergy. Perhaps an intolerance but there is NO reliable testing for those but food logs and trials. The ONLY 100% accurate test for food allergies is to eat the food to see if there is a reaction (under a Dr's care in a controlled setting). Honestly... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To Gluten And Common Gluten Free Ingredients
StephanieL replied to dtmichiels's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Were you seeing reactions to all those foods? That is a long and highly unusual list. It isn't recommended to test for things you have not seen an actual reaction to because of the very high rates of false positives in allergy testing. Were these tests conducted by a board certified allergist? Do you have Epi pens and an emergency action plan? -

ARCHIVED 5.5 Months gluten-free And Starting To See Issues Again
StephanieL replied to ryo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Many companies are taking the "gluten free" label off things because of the new government standard they are implementing. Companies aren't suppose to make the claim if they can't back it up even if there are no gluten ingredients in it. It may be worth getting test strips to see about the Vits. but they are very pricy. That is how we found out a brand of... -
ARCHIVED 5.5 Months gluten-free And Starting To See Issues Again
StephanieL replied to ryo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can you site your source of your statement "naturally gluten free are often CC'ed"? I've been reading and dealing with this for my child for 4+ years now and haven't found this to be so. Oats are often an issue but things like rice and other grains are most often fine. -
ARCHIVED Milk Allergy And Celiac Proving To Be Quite Difficult :(
StephanieL replied to Jen-1984's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Maybe start with the gluten free. If you have never had an issue with dairy in the past, a positive test doesn't mean a lot. There is a high percentage of false positives with allergy testing. Maybe starting with gluten and seeing if that helps your issues you may find dairy isn't an issue and it may be easier to stick too as well. -

Any possibility it may be art supplies or something else in school if she's in school? Sorry you're dealing with this. -
We have them take all the stuff from new containers to avoid any x-con.
