  1. I'd sure go next year, but I'll have moved to the Ozark Mountains by then. My daughter wanted to snag the lady they applauded for heading up the volunteer gang... to volunteer next year.
  2. Yea, they were really pushing their big "G" on the labels. Interestingly, both my daughter and I started to read the ingredients, out of habit, and were surprised to see Modified Food Starch. I've read different opinions about it, but we tend to just avoid it, assuming that if it doesn't specify the kind of starch, that it's not allowed.
  3. I got a bottle of BBQ sauce (the lady was telling me that no other BBQ sauces are gluten-free... so what have I been using for all these years??), a bottle of basting oil w/ all sorts of spices in it, and a Greek marinade for chicken. Pamelas gave me a box of chocolate biscotti. The gift bag had all sorts of goodies in it. Most interesting was a little...
  4. I did desensitization shots for terrible hay fever for years. They helped A LOT. Thankfully, the allergies got less and less over the years till they're mostly nonexistent anymore. I don't have to take anything.
  5. My daughter and I went. It was pretty neat. The anchor from CNN who has Celiac was a host and she asked all Celiacs to raise their hand. It was so cool to see about 250 hands shoot up. WE ARE OUT THERE! We don't have any other issues besides gluten, so we ate like little piggies. Food was delish, booze was free, and we got a whole bunch of freebies from...
  6. I've always described it as wolverines fighting their way out of me!!
  7. Manna from Anna bread mix fan here! Check her out at mannafromanna.com
  8. Personally, I don't eat anything w/ MFS in it unless it says MFS from corn. If it simply says MFS, it's not for me. Better safe than sorry! And there ARE some weirdos on here. But there are also so many people who have taught me so much. There's not a question I've ever had that couldnt' be answered by all these knowledgable folks. I can't express my appreciation...
  9. A "bit" proud?? What awesome kids... you have complete and total bragging rights!!!
  10. Before diagnosis, my all-time favorite food was homemade bread (and butter... that counts as one food, right??). I still miss it terribly. Manna from Anna bread mixes are one of the best I've found. I make a loaf maybe once a week and use some of the batter to fashion a few rolls w/ English Muffin Rounds. I slice the bread and freeze it and make sandwiches...
  11. Well, if you don't have kids right now... it's at least about a year away. I'd take the job and save as much $$ as you can! You'd lose your flexibility, like you said, but you'd help your financial situation!
  12. I was a nurse in a former life. Then got a degree in English and worked in Medical Publishing for about 10 years (editorial stuff). Now I investigate medical insurance claims. Sometimes it's routine, but catching insurance scammers is the highlight of my job... and holy cow... are they out there!!
  13. Wow... when was the last time you made an appt. w/ a GI doc? A 2-month wait is NOTHING! I too gained weight after going gluten-free. It was my own fault tho, as I sort of OD'd on all the yummy foods I COULD have so I wouldn't be so upset at all the foods I could no longer have!! I lost 25 of the 35 I gained and will struggle for that last 10 for the...
  14. I never gave my babies cereal either, as it seemed to me the ground up box w/ vitamin drops on it probably had the same nutritional value as the refined crap they sell as cereal. I gave them smashed up fruits and veggies at about 6 months while still breast feeding and later some tofu and yogurt. I stayed away from "allergy prone" foods like eggs and citrus...
  15. Unfortunately, I've had bad luck w/ most of the "chains"... Ruby Tuesdays, Applebees, TGIF... you explain and explain and they either don't get it or aren't willing to accommodate... or worse... swear they ARE accommodating and you find fried chinese noodles at the bottom of your salad... "Oh... THOSE have wheat in them??" I just don't go there anymore.
  16. I like Annlise Roberts flour blend best! 2 cups fine brown rice flour 2/3 cups potato starch (starch... NOT flour) 1/3 cup tapioca starch I use it for everything. Her recipes are the BEST!!
  17. Yea, I was TOTALLY freaked out when I was diagnosed! But there's so much information here that will make you feel so much better and so many people who know the answers to just about ANY question you could ask! It doesn't take long to focus on all the foods you CAN have rather than the ones you can't. Ya just have to learn to cook a little differently, that...
  18. All their bleu cheese dressings are gluten-free??? I'll be SO happy if they are!!!
  19. Mine are always the same... WICKED GI symptoms... I tell my husband it's wolverines trying to scratch their way out!! Don't have brain fog... thank goodness!! Just GI repercussions.
  20. My middle daughter didn't eat meat for probably 10 years. She wasn't a strict vegetarian, but simply didn't eat meat. Not too long after she was diagnosed, she began to eat it again, fearing she couldn't get the protein she needed. It didn't take her long to begin saying, "Man... I missed this stuff!!"
  21. Pharmaceutical drug reps are relentless in their sales practices. They're given "points" for making it in the door and more for actually getting into the doc's office to sit and talk. Companies bring fabulous lunches and breakfasts for office workers and have you ever had to sit in the waiting room for your appt. when the drug rep is shown right in?? I...
  22. Red licorice Sour cream... not all but some do, I was surprised to find out.
  23. I was diagnosed at about the same age as you, Daniela... been gluten-free for almost 5 years. This is the place to be... ask any question and SOMEONE knows the answer! Ask for a food recommendation and LOTS of people know the answers!
  24. Bumping this back to the top, cause I can't even believe it!!!
