  1. i can't either... I'm using IE..?
  2. Lentils, beans, apples with skin... all the non-starchy vegetables you can eat. A small amount of nuts. A few eggs (unless you're diabetic, in which case go light on the eggs). Fish, some chicken, a little red meat (grassfed is better). Limited dairy. Eliminating white carbs and sugar in favor of olive oil and whole grains can generally be useful for...
  3. Hullo all, Planning a trip and would like to know what the best-kept secrets are and/or reliable standbys are. I'll be in morningside heights for a few days, and wandering around other neighborhoods for another few days. Open to pretty much anything but prefer vegetarian and dairy-lite.
  4. Oh, I'm a little in love with the gluten free rice crispies. I've been eating them like popcorn though, plain or w/ PB as a snack, rather than as cereal. Today I had appam (Indian rice pancakes), carrot/cauliflower curry, and apricot mousse (pureed overripe apricot with a touch of gelatin to make it firm up.). Oh, and piece of chocolate while I made the...
  5. I've never had a problem with them, but I've only eaten them from little snack bags twice. Food should taste good sweet potato chips are wicked awesome.
  6. Well, they can do the endoscopy and a colonoscopy at the same time to look for both. For the biopsy to come back positive, you MUST be eating gluten. I'm inclided toward going ahead and testing all the options at the beginning, so you don't have to go back onto gluten if it does turn out to be a problem for further medical testing. You can also do...
  7. I'm going to skip em's link. Would rather not join the sobfest... Me: grief, extreme frustation (that's the stage after i throw things), extreme fatigue esp if combined with fatigue, sometimes with anger, and occasionally I'll stumble on a book or movie scene, but that's pretty rare. Anyone remember "where the red fern grows"? -- the end of that book...
  8. quiet here. made some rice pancakes (appam) for breakfast; was planning to garden but am kinda gimpy (cranky knee) and it was raining this morning, so I think it's probably still too wet. am remembering with fond nostalgia the trip to college... (three suitcases and a two trains, with an overnight stop)
  9. i'm liking that idea for the rice! I have dried cranberries, rosemary, and rice bubbling away in the rice cooker now and just ate a few lactofermented pickles (persian cukes + carrot sticks) to hold off the hunger until food is actually prepared. i'm having rice, broccoli (cooked) and some form of protein. Was gotten by eating out last weekend and have...
  10. I react. Not as badly, but I tried them several times thinking it might be something else. This was post-normal bloodwork, after 6 months.
  11. Add to that: there's the problem of the tests coming back negative! Even when they think to test you. I first had a GI test me for celiac in 2003 (ish?). negative. 2010, round #1, negative. 2010, round #2, positive, but barely. Fortunately, they tossed me on an elimination diet too, so that cemented it. That annoys me. If the first round of tests...
  12. I like soup! Get a thermos, or microwave. Lentil soup, black bean soup, potato soup, pumpkin soup, navy bean soup, vegetable soup, egg drop soup, corn bean chowder, sweet potato soup, split pea soup, green pea soup, 3 bean soup, carrot soup, cabbage soup, miso soup, greens soup, veg-pasta soup... and then there's the ones I don't really like: chicken and...
  13. There are rice noodles that are similar to ramen. Add protein and veg... I'd recommend building her a chart to use in planning/making (even if you'd rather put it together for her) lunches. Have her fill it out before you grocery shop. Have her explore some gluten-free blogs for ideas, or epicurious, or even just take her to the library. The other thing...
  14. I get them at Roche Bros and at Shaw's market once in a great while in MA. They are relatively good for gluten-free bread, but don't go in remembering classic chewy ciabatta!
  15. I sort of think I have less. I used to always notice it under fluorescent light, but not so often now.
  16. I'm a huge fan of vegetable and/or bean purees as dips for crackers and vegetables followed by fruit and chocolate/nuts if permitted, maybe a bit of cheese or milk from school. Think of it as a spin-off from hummus: take one favorite vegetable, cooked add one cooked/canned bean toss in a slosh of something refreshing, like lemon juice top it off with...
  17. Phinally put a foto up!! (Now have three hours until alarm... perhaps shall skip sleep entirely and take the bus...)
  18. I'm a huge fan of corn flour for all purpose flour in small amounts, and I love the flavor of buckwheat. A little ground flaxseed subs in for gums in homemade pancakes quite well. Skip the sorghum entirely.
  19. Pushing through pain is generally a bad idea unless it is the lactic acid burn/fatigue from something like sprinting or doing a rep on tired muscles. Injury pain means stop. Typically, there's some sort of inflammation or damage. When in doubt, back off. Can you get a PT referral? Or see if there is someone who offers sliding scales if $$ is an issue...
  20. Wow, I missed a lot of drama, amusement, and tragedy (ish). Just took me an hour to catch up. My family is so delightfully normal and boring. Except that my mother refuses to turn her cell phone on, but my parents don't have a landline in the current house, and so I can't call her back. Not that I specifically need to, but it's surprisingly irritating...
  21. Ditto the get testesd suggestion first if it's at all possible that you'll have a hard time with wondering whether you have celiac without doing the full medical work-up. I did all the testing and then did a strict elimination diet with a gluten challenge and felt a little bit like I was dying for a few days during the challenge. Mind, I ate gluten for...
  22. Salmon Artichoke Patties (retro with a post-millenium twist) Summer Smashed Red Potatoes Peas (freezer, sadly, the garden was too wet to pick from) Chocolate First serious cooked meal in almost a week-- I've been furiously working on final edits on my cooking for one cookbook. It's almost there, but find it sort of ironic that I've been living on peanut...
  23. Beware the chickens injected with salt water! (Not jess's fluffies, but the supermarket varieties) Seriously, are you instructing your dad on which brands of chicken have no added sodium? They're almost as dangerous as inlaws bearing "gifts" of poison and clutter.
