  1. Digestive enzymes helped me enormously. Probiotics may also be generally helpful. Digestive enzymes (OTC) need a pretty substantial dose to get through your stomach acid, or see if you can get the rx version which is coated to help with that. A low fat diet helped a little, but not a huge amount. Really, gluten-free made the difference. Whole Foods...
  2. I've eaten a lot of lunch/dinner type food for breakfast. Leftovers mainly, but I also just like soup/stew for breakfast. Any kind of soup, with protein in it. It means I go through leftovers faster, which is nice. Also, I like buckwheat pancakes (with added stuff like chopped apple, nuts, etc). Snack ideas: refried beans/salsa/tortilla chips ...
  3. If you have that much inflammation, you may want to stick to cooked vegetables. Not boiled to death, but cooking at least starts the process of breaking down all those delicious compounds and makes it a little easier on your body.
  4. The substitutes are generally not so great. BUT, there are some pretty good things that are naturally gluten-free. See if you can find or make arepas (especially with cheese in the middle!), make rice pilafs, sweet potatoes, squash... You can put red sauce on polenta (if you make it and then bake it, it solidifies). You can grill eggplant to make eggplant...
  5. NonHuman, it's on my blog which is groundcherry on wordpress. I have a link in my profile... let me know if you can't find it. Hope you enjoy it!
  6. Gluten-free 123's Allie's Awesome Buckwheat Pancake Mix is pretty great. I bought it on the online bookseller that once spammed here in a package of three. It has no extra sugar, so you can sweeten or make a savory pancake as desired. I've made them plain, with added flaxseeds and nuts, chopped apple, a splash of cider, and/or cinnamon. Pumpkin is going...
  7. Ditto. (And I had a negative biopsy, but there is at least the sense that I have little or no intestinal damage.) If I could get my Dad to do bloodwork, and it were iffy/negative, I'd probably try to talk him into a biopsy as well.
  8. Well, I'd say that there is the whole bell curve thing, and you're probably just on the slower end. I mean, there is the sense of "Oh I feel better" but I'm discovering that I'm still not quite up to par when I push it a little even though I am *much* better. Unemployment is good for being able to take unplanned naps ;-). Say, for example (no real basis...
  9. I would definitely not introduce meat after not eating it for a long period immediately before an elimination diet. Even turkey or chicken. But, yes, be sure that fish is not a problem... maybe rotate it out for a couple of weeks after introducing your first alternate protein (eggs or lentils, maybe?). And maybe skip shellfish altogether. Meat introductions...
  10. It varies. Some people few better in a couple of days, some people take 8 months or even a couple of years to truly become healthy again. You may also still be getting enough contamination or possibly straight gluten in a disguised form if you are eating processed foods. People also have problems with other foods, like milk or soy. It's your call on...

    ARCHIVED Vitamin D

RBC: possibly folate or B12 (or both) You'd have to have your dr look at the size of your RBC (it helps if you have a baseline) or other bloodwork. Yeah, I've been deficient/low now and previously despite OTC supplementation. And no, I don't wear sunscreen but I do live in the cold dark north. It's fairly common. The high dose did bring me back up...
  12. is starting a blog: groundcherry.wordpress.com

  13. Fatigue is mostly cleared, and I'm on week five now. Mg probably made a difference with that, as did vit D. I've only really started to feel back with it (mood and energy) in the last week, but had been steadily improving. Mood was definitely worse for the first couple of weeks. Weight stabilized in the first three weeks and I could still stand to gain...
  14. As an adult, I'm finding that it's very helpful to turn to non-food "treats" as well as using gluten-free substitutes. Playing frisbee instead of going out for pizza, or seeing a movie instead of dinner out. Maybe that can work for kids too? Does she have favorite outings or little things she collects that you can focus on instead? And the first few...
  15. Liqorice is soothing to the GI tract-- I used to take it in a tea pretty often, usually combined with lemon and/or ginger. It's also pretty yummy. I don't know how irritating Plavix is, but I'd be extremely wary of regular aspirin on an abused GI. I suspect that would make you pretty uncomfortable. Even a few Aleve can leave me with reflux issues and...
  16. Yeah, I was ravenously hungry all the time until my weight came back up to 115 (my normal weight range is 115-125 depending on activity levels). Now am more normal, although I think I need to watch the sugar/refined grains a little more closely... Took about 3 weeks. My doc was kind of amazed that I gained weight on an elimination diet when I was still...
  17. You can get good continental dry ciders in wine bottle/ champagne sizes too. can't think of any brands off hand, but my favorite (and kind of far away) outlet carries a few. "Cidre" is generally how it's spelled for French imports; Apfelwein for German imports. Dry ciders are wonderful-- there are a few classy US producers that make some that are dressy...
  18. it took me 10 days to feel better and then i was "cranky" for another week. and i was eating no prepared foods at all.
  19. I have to say that I picked up the Trader Joe's bread on Tuesday and promptly put it back on the shelf. It felt like a dry cement block, and I used to eat those German-style dense rye breads so coming from me that's saying something. Kinda glad to hear that not buying it was a good choice. :-)

    ARCHIVED Doctor In Ma?

It's a hike, but he's pretty open and crazy thorough. North Cambridge, Marino Center for Integrative Medicine, Robert Weissberg
  21. In Japan, I could find cornmeal in the Brazilian stores... are there enough Brazilians to support grocery stores in your part of Australia? The polenta I've bought in the US is like really coarse cornmeal. More like fine grits- I'd soak it before using in cornbread or else it might be little dry. Cornmeal is somewhere between that and flour. My favorite...
  22. Shelter or work on word-of-mouth. I possess an "only cat" who was fighting with another cat in their home. She's lovely. Not having another cat is just fine with me. I'm delighted to have her, but will need to be careful if we ever move in with another cat or just plain avoid it I'd avoid drugs... just side effects, etc... but maybe there is an underlying...
  23. False negatives happen. Diarrhea generally means a dr will order an endoscopy even with negative bloodwork. I'd follow-up on the blood work and check your anti-gliadin antibodies (IgG and IgA) too if that wasn't done the first time. They can indicate a problem with gluten even w/o celiac disease. You could also do a diet trial (2-3 weeks gluten-free...
  24. I've been eating Erewhon's Rice Twice, which I think is pretty much rice crispies. It's priced between $3.50/$4.00 per box (typical for cereal here). It's in a couple of stores I use, but don't know whether it's widely available.
