  1. This test is so specific for celiac (95-98% depending on the study) that there are publications suggesting that endoscopy might not be necessary in people who show the antibody and respond to the gluten-free diet. I'm not sure why your doctor said otherwise.
  2. TTG and reticulin are autoimmune antibodies and clearly indicate celiac. Reticulin is particularly specific, while TTG can sometimes appear in other autoimmune diseases. Anti-gliadin is only a reaction to gliadin, not an autoimmune antibody, and it is notoriously inaccurate as far as celiac disease. You may be gluten intolerant, or you may be one of the...
  3. To be honest, my usual reaction to a difficult manager is to start very quietly looking for a new job. If you think your boss is looking to use health issues to fire you, the moment you start FMLA he/she will start looking for something else. If I were in your situation, as well as looking for a new job, I would talk to a disability lawyer. Around here...
  4. You need to talk to a doctor about safety. I doubt it would keep you from healing, and obviously you need to do what works to finish the quarter. I find Pepto tremendously helpful to deal with being glutened but I've never needed it for more than 4 or 5 days. If it's always eating that hurts, I wonder if you would get relief from taking an acid blocker...
  5. Now where this comes in with Marz's original question is that there are two kinds of casein in milk, A1-beta casein and A2-beta casein. A1-beta casein is the kind of casein more likely to make us sick. You can learn more by doing some reading on A1 and A2 milk. Some breeds of cows make more A1-beta casein than others. Goat's milk is pure A2-beta casein...
  6. I don't make this stuff up. (Though I did confuse α- and β-caseins.) Here you go. By the way, all you would have had to do to search is type "celiac casein" into PubMed. It's really not hard at all to find literature. I do have the advantage of often being able to get full text because of where I work. Open Original Shared Link "Intolerance o...
  7. "I guess I can have" will often get you glutened. You need to ask the restaurant whether there is flour in the seasonings on the meats, what's in the sauces, whether their tortillas are 100% corn, and so forth. You will find that refried beans, Mexican rice, salsa, guacamole, and corn tortillas are usually safe. You have to be more careful with meats and...
  8. You need a medical diagnosis if you run into problems with field trips, classroom snacks, and later on with college meal plans. See if your doctor is willing to diagnose celiac on the basis of a positive blood test and strong reactions to eating wheat. If he'll write the letter, you're good to go.
  9. I've never had a problem with food and TSA. Just make sure it's easily recognizable as food. I flew over Thanksgiving with gluten-free pretzels, sliced cheese, carrot and celery sticks, a couple hard-boiled eggs, and nuts in my bag. In the past I've flown with peeled oranges, sliced apples, and even sandwiches. Bring an empty water bottle and fill it on...
  10. The benefit of potassium citrate is supposedly to alkalize the body a little better. There is some nutritional theory around that the typical Western diet of meat and grains is acid-forming and causes bone loss. Taking potassium citrate is a bit of a band-aid. The REAL solution is to shift your diet over to eating lots of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables...
  11. You might look at some of the RPAH Failsafe diet info if you seem to be reacting to all meat and eggs. There can be a lot of amines in meat and eggs and some people react. The solution is to find a source of very fresh meat. Open Original Shared Link
  12. But how do you know whether or not these things are caused by undetected celiac autoimmunity? This is simply a list, not data that explains mechanism.
  13. Bob's All Purpose has a lot of garbanzo bean flour in the mix. I'm not fond of the flavor.
  14. There is no gluten in milk. Different breeds of dairy of cows make milks with slightly different casein profiles and if you're a little sensitive to alpha-casein (really common in celiacs) you might find some milks agree with you better than others.
  15. Sorry it didn't work out, but you did the right thing. This must be hard as I remember you really cared for him.
  16. This is that same 2005 flawed study everyone keeps pointing to. There was 82 ppm of gluten cross-contamination in the corn. Makes me wonder a little about the self-styled experts writing for Celiac.com.
  17. It takes people anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months to really start to feel better. It depends on how bad the inflammation and damage is. I hope gluten-free helps him!
  18. No, rice is generally safe for celiacs. Besides, General Mills is testing their products for gluten-free status. I'm guessing it has to do with the Rice Chex not being made in a dedicated facility.
  19. No, it's great. It sets an example!
  20. I don't think the Rice Chex are from a dedicated facility. Jerseyangel called General Mills a while back and they said the Rice Chex are made on dedicated lines. is the thread. That was a while back, before the Betty Crocker dedicated facility. You might give a call or email again and ask exactly what they're doing. Also, double-check my ingredient...
  21. I had horrible symptoms and still did better in a week or two as far as GI. It's not in your head an I'm glad to hear you're feeling better!
  22. It's a shame the psoriasis has not improved yet. I think you're right to stick to the diet given all her other autoimmunity and delayed growth. I really hope more of her symptoms improve with longer on the diet. Five weeks is a relatively short time and the positive signs you are seeing must be encouraging. I would urge you and your husband to get a...
  23. Welcome. I looked up some gluten challenge articles a little while back that might give you an idea. Scroll down to the 4th post in this thread for brief summaries and links to the abstracts.
  24. I missed the weight loss. That's 25%! She needs medical care and blood testing sooner rather than later. As far as I know, Alzheimer's doesn't cause that kind of weight loss until it's progressed really far.
