  1. It's a sad state of affairs when the place that is supposed to make you well offers mostly food that will make you ill. Glad you are out of there and I hope you won't have to return anytime soon.
  2. About the shampoo--if you have really short hair and have no scalp issues it may not be a problem. However I have often woken up to a piece of hair in my mouth or had it blow in there on a windy day. Do you shampoo your hair with gloves on or do you wash your hands really well with non-gluten containing soap when you are done? If you wash your hair and...
  3. Thanks everyone for your responses. I know this is more than allergies, but for me I really do have serious allergies as well as the gluten intolerance (see my signature). It's just easier to start the conversation with my food allergies and ease into explaining celiac disease as an auto-immune disease. Some people really don't care and just want to know...
  4. Has all of your family been tested and come up negative? Do they have any other health issues? You may just be the only one with positive test results or you may just be the only one that wants to admit it and change their diet. I started a thread a while back about people in my life that I suspect have celiac/gluten issues but they don't want to hear...
  5. Thanks for the tip. Where is this BJ's restaurant located? I've never heard of them. The only BJ's around here is BJ's Warehouse (sort of like a SAM's Club) which is why I opened this thread--I was hoping someone had found gluten-free pizza at BJ's.
  6. Forgot, here's a link to that thread I was talking about above:
  7. Yes, you should watch you sugar and carbs more carefully. See the thread about carbs making people feel lousy. Also I have seen a few people on here say they have a problem with cane sugar. Hopefully they will be along soon to tell you what their symptoms are. I often have symptoms of hypoglycemia if I overdo it on the carbs. But if I eat mainly protein...
  8. This is mostly a vent, but I don't mind if anyone has advice. I got glutened a couple days ago by some masa harina mix that had wheat cc. I threw most of it up when I ate it so I didn't get any digestive issues, but I am experiencing major neuro symptoms. Yesterday I woke up with muscle pain and very stiff joints. Felt really weak and exhausted and could...
  9. There are very few pro's I can think of to getting an official diagnosis as an adult. PERHAPS the only thing I can think of is if you frequently fly on long plane trips and need a doctor's note for the airline to arrange gluten free food. But most airline food is pretty gross anyway and you can still bring your own foods on most flights, so that's an option...
  10. M&M's are made by Mars, not Hershey. I would call and ask if they are made on shared equipment.
  11. This thread was started in 2007. I think the original poster meant they use McCormick's ginger powder (a spice) AND THEN they put some gluten free soy sauce on it. Two different products. Ginger Soy Sauce does sound tasty though doesn't it?
  12. I also wanted to add about your son refusing the chicken nuggets. Even though they are safe he may be refusing them based on past experiences with gluten-coated chicken nuggets. My 3 year old neice is allergic to eggs and nuts. They figured out the nut allergy pretty fast, but before they knew about the eggs she would throw up after she ate eggs and refused...
  13. Thank you, I'll try that one next.
  14. The best thing to do is to cut your diet down to just meat and veggies that you know are safe for a couple weeks. Then add things in that are unknowns (like dairy and soy) one at a time and see how your body reacts (give yourself up to 3 days to make sure there are no delayed reactions). This is called an elimination diet. Many do have problems with some...
  15. Will he eat just plain cooked chicken? Baked beans with BBQ sauce? (you may have to make your own sauce) Have you tried homemade hummus--it's really easy to make and doesn't have a strong flavor, just leave out the tahini/sesame if he's also allergic to that. What about mashed sweet potatoes with a little pure maple syrup added? Sweet Peas or green beans...
  16. Yes, where do you live? If you are anywhere near a city, there must be a place that also carries a gluten free option. We have Uno's Chicago Grill and Z-Pizza here. Some others I've heard of are Mellow Mushroom (select locations), Pizza Fusion, Garlic Jims and a company called Still Riding Pizza sells gluten-free crusts to various places across the country...
  17. Thanks. Do you mind sharing if there is a brand you buy that is safe? Or do you buy it fresh made from a Mexican market? I have heard of doing that as well, but I thought there would be a greater chance of CC in the deli than if I make it myself. I don't have any reactions to whole corn or corn starch so I know it wasn't the corn.
  18. Thanks, I finally got a reply from someone at this company. It is processed in a facility with wheat flour so I guess I got a batch that was badly contaminated. The brand is called "Minsa" in case anyone else wants to know. It's made in Mexico and sent here so it could have also been shipped/trucked in with Wheat flour in the same truck.
  19. This is great advice, except for the whole grain bread and pasta thing. Switching to whole wheat pasta and bread was one of the many clues that I had a problem with gluten. I reacted much faster to them and got much more sick when I ate them. I think the advice should be avoid bread and pasta and eat more fibrous veggies instead.
  20. I have the same thing going on and I've just learned to be okay with it. I would rather feel good and healthy than eat whatever I want. I don't have much problems with carby veggies like whole kernel corn, potatoes, or sweet potatoes and for grains I eat mainly rice. But I do stick with meat and veggies for most of my meals. When I'm really craving bread...
  21. Hi, the symptoms you describe are very similar to mine and many on this board. That doctor you talked to is either not very familiar with celiac's disease or is working off very out-dated information. You can have EITHER weight gain or weight loss and EITHER diareaha or Constipation with Celiac's disease (some people even have both C & D). Some uninformed...
  22. Have you checked all your lotions, make-up, shampoos, deodorant, soaps (evan laundry soap) to see if they are gluten free? After going gluten-free I started getting hives from some lotion I had been using with wheat germ oil in it. Many people will say they have no reaction to gluten in non-food items, but for me I have to check that everything is gluten...
  23. Hi, I have seen some people post here that they are intolerant to brown rice, but white rice doesn't give them any problems. Perhaps you just need to switch the type or rice you use or perhaps you cannot tolerate rice at all. When you use the word "sieve" are you talking about a colander--what you are rinsing the rice in prior to cooking? Those things are...
  24. Yes, that could be it. Nerve pain was one of my worst symptoms, as well as swollen joints and muscle spasms. I went through all a whole battery of tests with a neurologist, plus a full spinal and brain MRI and they found nothing. You should rule out other things as well, but going gluten free won't hinder looking for other problems. Have you talked to...
