ARCHIVED Food Allergies & Intestinal Healing
jenvan replied to Emme999's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That is an interesting article Michelle. I do believe that the reliability of food intolerance tests and the theory of them is a bit shady... When I had my tests done I discussed them with the dietician/biochemist at the lab and she said we couldn't be sure whether eating the foods that tested high would actually 'do' anything to my body. So, I am trying... -

Thanks for the ideas ! My meeting was actually moved to next Thursday, but that gives me some time to whip up a spectacular, yet subtle presentation

ARCHIVED Is Anyone Else Concerned About All Ibs Publicity?
jenvan replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
One of the main theories of IBS is that it is a functional disorder. There is an issue with the way your brain tells your intestines to contract, spasm, possibly having to do with seratonin in the brain. Open Original Shared Link It may exist, but I do believe that for many individuals, the diagnosis of IBS is a bit of a cop-out. (It was in... -
ARCHIVED Question For The Non-celiac Spouses...
jenvan replied to frenchiemama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Frenchie--that quote makes me laugh! My brian has said the same thing before. Or he'll say--'I don't know what I'm allowed to eat in the house and what I'm not allowed to eat.' And I'm like--'you can eat anything you want! Everything in this house belongs to you too!' (except maybe my clothes and makeup!) I said this to him again last night I think... -
Stephanie- Kind of makes me laugh about how in the US they consider it a weed, rather than harvesting it. Doesn't surprise me !

ARCHIVED Question For The Non-celiac Spouses...
jenvan replied to frenchiemama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
huh, that is strange. i would do what tiffany suggested--ask him if he is avoiding gluten-free food or if it is some big coincidence left to his own vices, my husband would eat frozen pizza, corn dogs and fish and chips each night! so i understand the concern i would bring it up with him, and also see if he would even try something, so it would dispell... -
Kimberly- So it really takes a month or two to notice a difference? I'm still debating about trying the diet. I have read the book, and still feel like I'm waiting to feel better on the gluten-free diet alone. I may wait till the beginning of next month when I go in for another celiac disease blood test. If the #s are down, then I think I would try the...

ARCHIVED More Of A Rant Than Anything
jenvan replied to browneyedgrl73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We understand! Let us know how your tests go. I was diagnosed in Feb and know my husband gets tired of me talking about my celiac at times--and probably this board too ! -
wow that sounds interesting--chocolatley, sweet taste. i kept thinking--with a name like mesquite--that it would taste like liquid smoke or grill flavoring

lushgreen- ps, if your iron is the culprit and you have to have the iron infusion done, it is not a hard procedure at all. just make sure they do a small test before on you with the iron to make sure you're not allergic. there are several different kinds they can give intravenously. my results came back and my iron is still in the normal range...so it...

ARCHIVED Sensitivity Vs. Cd
jenvan replied to Martyg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The main difference is that if you are sensitive, and you consume gluten, the consequences will make you uncomfortable, so to speak (headache, fatigue, stomache--things of that nature). But if its Celiac, consuming gluten will actually damage your intestines. ...and over time will put you at a higher risk for MANY other diseases--including cancer. I would... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think Of Yourself As A "sick" Person?
jenvan replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmm, this is an interesting question. For me, I think that internally, I do think of myself as somewhat fragile or maybe just not fully recovered...maybe not "sick", but I have seen little progress physically on the gluten-free diet yet, so I certainly can't say that I feel 'normal' or really healthy yet. With more energy, and less fibro-type pain, I wouldn... -
ARCHIVED Good Milk Substitute For Kids?
jenvan replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also do rice milk. I have tried Pacific-it is gluten-free. It is pretty good, but has a slight mayo taste to me. So my favorite rice milk is wild oat's brand. Not sure you have one near you. It is like $1.40 cheaper than the other brands too... -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Else Concerned About All Ibs Publicity?
jenvan replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ab- I hate to be a 'conspiracy-theorist', but there definitely has to be atleast somewhat of a correlation between publicity and the influence of big drug companies Guess this is just even more motivation for us to keep spreading the word. Wouldn't it be cool if someone funded a commercial for Celiac that could air on the radio? -
ARCHIVED Unfit For Military Service....
jenvan replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was going to mention food critic...but did you guys ever hear of the woman who was diagnosed with celiac and continues to be a food critic. She doesn't recommend it to anyone with celiac disease, but she eats non gluten-free foods, and just spits them out...doesn't swallow. I can't remember where I read about her now... -
I'm still amazed at times about being "glutened" and how powerful of a reaction it can be. I had my first 'documented' case of being glutened a few weeks ago I believe (it can be hard to tell for me). My friend had some balsamic dressing, homemade, at a restaurant, and commented on how nasty it tasted. I, being a cook-type, wanted to taste it and critique...

Bob had a good idea on getting a book. Probably the most recommended around here is 'Wheat Free, Worry Free' by Danna Korn. You can buy/order it at most bookstores. I got mine off of Amazon... -

For a while now I've been forgetting things--I never did that before. My husband has noticed too. It's weird... I figure that will improve and subside as I am continuing to be gluten-free... But when I get the bad brain fog-it is usually a head ache coupled with a feeling of loopiness, disorientation, heavy fatigue, lack of concentration...
