  1. I second Skylark's recommendations. Ensure is great for when I am too hurried or nervous (if there is a crisis) to eat solid food. Highly recommend it. After a while, you learn to like it! Also, yes, a gastroenterologist is who you would see but only after getting the tests done by the primary care physician. Look up the differences between endoscopy and...
  2. The vitamins I take are a monthly injection of B12 and a weekly mega dose (50,000) of D. However, it makes sense to get your blood tested for vitamins every once in a while just to make sure that vitamin-taking is still necessary (I am not that into it - prefer eating them). I look forward to the day when I no longer have to take these. It's probably not...
  3. No, it doesn't sound snooty! It sounds about right. And I agree. I feel very much the same way about other issues, such as recycling. The issue is covered so superficially, and we never get beyond the beginner's level to move on to the real heart of the matter. I agree 100%!
  4. Burt's Bees Dandruff shampoo (they don't make it anymore, but I only wash my hair about 2 times a week, so my stuff lasts and lasts); 365 fragrance-less shampoo from Whole Foods; Head and Shoulders; Nizoral (not 100% sure that is gluten-free); Dessert Essence like someone else said; Suave naturals conditioner (lavender). From the hair salon - Pureology...
  5. These are my notes from before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Please keep in mind, that these notes are notes (in one instance stuff copied from the 'net) and were written before I was diagnosed! ______ Symptoms
  6. Well, was it gluten-free????
  7. Great to know. (Can I ask how you found out?)
  8. Thank you. The only entries I could see/access on your blog under your profile were from June 2011, and did not appear to contain what you referenced, above. Plumbago
  9. Last year, I wanted my father's doctor to test for Celiac, since I was newly diagnosed. I specifically asked him for the complete panel, although honestly, at the time, I did not know what tests made up the complete panel. I got the results back, and all he had run was t-Transglutaminase AB IgA Reflex ENDOMYSIAL AB IgA. The results was 7 (Normals 0-1...
  10. From doctors, when I've said flat out that I have celiac and I literally CAN NOT eat gluten, I get responses ranging from disbelief, to confusion, to downright annoyance and anger. The ONLY person who accepted it no questions asked was my chiro. And my rheumy wanted me to stop seeing him because he was "dangerous". Not likely, sweetheart! Doctors in the...
  11. What I have thought about a lot lately is natural disasters. When all those tornados hit the south this spring and wiped out entire towns, killing hundreds and leaving hundreds homeless and in shelters, I thought about the gluten-free victims. Me too. There are Celiac groups in Alabama, more than one, and they are very active. I would not at all be...
  12. I live in DC. I used to work at a nonprofit that helped people get jobs. We would want to know about any and all medical issues, such as diabetes. At certain kitchens around the city, awareness is adequate about a good diet and tailoring it to a medical condition. It might not be the case at every single shelter or kitchen, though.
  13. This is a question I'm sure we've all thought a lot about recently. After reading the comments here, I have concluded that the fact that there is no special set aside for Celiacs in shelters and pantries is reflective of the disease's low status, mostly in the medical community. Think about it - if a homeless person has diabetes, that is taken into...
  14. There are places, however, that sell Coca-Cola with sugar. In many stores, this is known as "Mexican Coke." I can buy it in DC and a couple other places. During Jewish holidays it is sometimes possible to buy kosher Coke, in some stores. It can be hard to find though. And of course, since it is imported it is more expensive. Coke made with sugar is, as far...
  15. I ordered it from Abe Books. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Although I haven't read it yet in much detail, it is a workbook and seems to be just in line with what I am looking for. We'll see if I can at last understand the gluten attack! Plumbago
  16. http://www.burtsbees...kum-butter.html Ingredients: cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed wax, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, olus (vegetable oil, huile vegetale), cera alba (beeswax, cire d'abeille), sclerocarya birrea seed oil, soybean glycerides, theobroma...
  17. Checked the archives, on this product line, and not much was current, so I thought I'd ask: Does anyone know if Avalon Organics skin nourishing antioxidant Vitamin C Hydrating Cleansing Milk is gluten-free? The statement on their Web site was standard-issue CYA: Our vegetable-based formulations come from a variety of sources and combinations of derivatives...
  18. Sorry, I meant to comment specifically on that recommendation. First I was going to check it out from our library system (you know, that of the capital of the United States?), but alas, not available. Sadly this is not unusual. So, I called a local bookstore. No, not available to order. I prefer to buy things at real walk-in stores, but I'm not sure...
  19. All the replies have been very good so far. I wish there were more! One thing that I would like to have are more recommendations for books. The Green book was very good, once I supplemented my knowledge with the Atlas of Anatomy. Without the latter book, the Green book was only moderately useful to me, if that. We've gotten some good recommendations...
  20. I recently got pizza at a place called Flippin Pizza. It was delicious and the man cooking it assured me he knew of the precautions to take.
  21. Thanks for this. So true about fear being a contagion on the Internet at times. But it's not really what I was referring to in my original post. What I was saying or trying to say had to do with studying as opposed to quickly looking things up on the Internet, and darting from site to site. Book-learning vs Web-learning to put it simplistically. I...
  22. When attempting to learn about something in depth, the key often is to find the right combination of resources. It's almost impossible to find a one-stop shop that meets all needs when it comes to something as complicated as medicine and celiac disease. I would like to share with this group of people the combination of sources I have found that has helped...
  23. From the entry for gluten in Wikipedia: Added to other foods The "Codex Alimentarius" international standards for food labeling has a standard relating to the labeling of products as "gluten-free", but this standard does not apply to foods that "...in their normal form do not contain gluten."[10] Gluten is used as a stabilizing agent in products like...
  24. Just watched a Stella Artois commercial, and man o man did that beer look delicious. How hard would it be to tack on at the end something about "we also offer a gluten-free beer." Or something? Has anyone ever seen mainstream advertising of gluten free products? If so, where?
  25. No adverse reactions at all. Just satisfaction. I even figured out how to cook Arrowhead - it takes much longer than Bob's.
