ARCHIVED How Did You Find Out?
nikki-uk replied to doulagrl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As a baby ( even on just milk ) my son used to have terrible diarrhoea, but as my son had a heart condition and subsequent surgeries I thought it was a side effect of all the meds he was on. When solids were introduced his stools were (if I say so myself!) horrific!! All the docs just said there was nothing wrong (stool tests were run) and it was... -
ARCHIVED Newbie-need Support/advice
nikki-uk replied to doulagrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Melody, I'm in the UK and my husband and son are both diagnosed coeliacs. You and your son both sound as if you both have coeliac disease. First off - you are right in thinking that being gluten-free will give you a 'false negative' on the blood tests. You would need to do a 'gluten challenge' to gain positive bloods and then biopsies for a... -
ARCHIVED Headache After Eating Dairy
nikki-uk replied to georgie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Headache was one of the first signs my hubby got if he had too much milk (along with stomach gripes) He cut it out for around 3 months and now he can tolerate it ok (but he has a limit !) -

ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
nikki-uk replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Rez, - I'm in a similar situation. Hubby is biopsy proved coeliac as is son number 2. My eldest (17yrs) asked if he could be tested as he's been trying to put on weight but can't (he is very slim) All our mainmeals are gluten-free - and my son informs me that he's been avoiding 'wheaty' things at lunch as he gets stomach ache - so he is in effect... -

ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
nikki-uk replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well there you go!! If Jegstar can't understand it then there's no hope for me!! I'm not even sure it would be worthwhile getting my 2 non coeliac son's halotyped. If a test can only tell me ''No they don't carry the main genes but that doesn't mean gluten won't do them harm'' then what's the point? -
Hi jmengert, I live in UK (near London) As far as supermarkets go I can only say that both my husband and son have both been fine with food marked gluten-free from Tesco and M&S - not much help I know. We don't eat out much either so I wouldn't be able to confidently recommend any restaurants Sainsbury's is another supermarket that has...

ARCHIVED 4yo In Uk Being Treated For Depression
nikki-uk replied to Nantzie's topic in Publications & Publicity
I'm in the UK and I read that article (but in a different paper) In the paper I read it was blaming her depression on the local authority who wouldn't let her go to school where her friends went. Thinking about it the symptoms do fit (possibly) Even more worrying is that my 11 yr old son was recently seen by a paediatrician who thinks he may be depressed... -

ARCHIVED So My Biopsy Results Are Back -?
nikki-uk replied to breann6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
ONE SAMPLE!!! I can't believe that!! When my son had his biopsy they took 18 samples and 2 for research!!! As you've had a positive blood and you know gluten makes you ill I'd say you can call yourself a coeliac and be done with all the tests and stay gluten-free. It must be very frustrating for you. -

Donna, according to this from enterolab DQ7 has the highest predisposition to celiac disease So why do people only talk about DQ2 + 8 My hubby is biopsy proven coeliac and my son. Does this mean that they both MUST have DQ2 or 8 ? I have been thinking of getting my other 2 sons gene tested (although as we are in the UK we can... -

Carla -I've been bugging the life out of Patti in PM's trying to work all this gene stuff out so it'd be great if you started a thread. I'm thinking of getting my other 2 boys gene tested and my tiny mind is desperately trying to absorb all the info.... but the info keeps leaking out ! -

It makes my heart sink to think that Lyme is yet another disease like celiac disease that is being ignored because of politics and $. To be honest (being in the UK) I didn't know much about Lyme - other than I'm sure I read once that the model Christie Brinkley has it (is that right?) - did she get better? This thread has been a total eye opener... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Panel
nikki-uk replied to alexp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think 4 days would make much difference to your bloods BUT if they come out positive and your doc wants you to have a biopsy you do need to still be eating gluten for that. However , plenty of people don't bother having the biopsy as they know they feel better by going gluten-free. BTW, welcome to the boards!! -

ARCHIVED False Positive Blood Test?
nikki-uk replied to emja73's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
They are looking for changes in the lining of her bowel which in coeliac disease is called 'villous atrophy'. The lining of the bowel is covered in finger like projections (like a shag pile carpet! ) but when you have celiac disease these fingers become blunted and shortened. This stops you fully absorbing all the nutrients you need from food leading... -

ARCHIVED Biopsy Thursday
nikki-uk replied to jo14's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Joanne and welcome!! I'm in the UK too and my son was diagnosed with celiac disease by biopsy a couple of weeks ago (my hubby is also a coeliac) I really was very anxious about the whole process (especially as my son has a heart condition) In fact,- I found the hospital to be excellent at allaying my fears. They were very professional and took... -

Me too!!. Maybe it's the lack of sunlight (my eczema disappears in the summer) Glad you're gonna get to see your Dad - hope all goes well -
Sounds great!! I have found the Spanish much more accomadating to the gluten-free diet than at home (UK)
