  1. The normal advice is that you have to go back to eating gluten for at least 6 weeks (longer if possible) to build up enough antibodies to get a 'positive' on your bloods. Unfortunately a couple of days of eating gluten (if you were gluten-free) will not be enough to give you an accurate result on your bloods
  2. Yep, I've heard of that too. It was one of the things hubby was tested for when he was ill (dear lord, he was tested for nearly every disease known to man before celiac disease. They was even considering testing him for Lyme back then) ..Glad you're spreading the word!! Ouch!! I get eczema in and around my ears too (and just...
  3. Hi Catherine, It's the other way round for me and my hubby - he's the coeliac. Hubby was lighter than me all our married life (due to him not being diagnosed probably) and I always hated it! Hubby's been gluten-free for 2 yrs now and I've been gluten-free 1yr ( I finally joined him going gluten-free - initially to support him, but I found it helped...
  4. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
  5. My son had a negative (well borderline actually) blood test - but had a repeat test a year after (coupled with symptoms) which came up high positive. You can develop celiac disease at any age, so the fact that your son has had a negative blood now doesn't mean he won't EVER get celiac disease. Keep your son aware of all the symptoms so if he develops...
  6. My son had a positive biopsy for celiac disease a couple of weeks ago. He was in the norm for height and weight. He didn't have diarrhoea - more loose stools , but no more than once or twice a day.Very rarely complained of tummy aches. His biggest symptom was bone pain and achey joints. My hubby (also biopsy dx'd coeliac) did lose some weight...
  7. C, - Alot to take in I'm sure Damn, I bet you didn't see that coming Do you now have to have a colonoscopy too? (I think Crohns usually affects the large intestine, but can affect parts of the small bowel (ilium?)) Someone else mentioned that the gluten-free diet does actually help some Crohns sufferers. I know 2 people with Crohns -...
  8. Lisa, - so glad you finally got to see your specialist. Let's hope that they can get you in fairly soon for the endoscopy and see what's going on in there! I know it must be quite hard for you keeping up with your studies whilst feeling so rough Be patient! - at least the doc is taking your symptoms on board and wants to get to the bottom...
  9. That's great news Susie!! (give yourself a pat on the back!!) How's the other intolerances going?
  10. ...and that it is a childhood disease, and that you have to have profuse watery stools, and be severly underweight ..etc.. etc I like to think that new med students aren't taught the same thing but yes ,docs have alot to learn about the signs and symptoms of celiac disease. When you consider that roughly 1/100 people have celiac disease (not necessarily...
  11. Hi C, I think everyone else covered it - except when my hubby had his he had to lie on a bed which tipped him about in various positions (to sloosh the chalky stuff round I suppose ) He found the mixture gave him D, but I suppose everyones different.Best to drink plenty of water after to flush it through. ..and yeah ,the white chalky stuff apparently...
  12. LOL!! ....and as usual Richard shrugs off the (good humoured) anti men jokes single handedly!!!
  13. Caught me!! Edit: Just loving that Kaftan look!!
  14. Just to add if you have been gluten-free for a while your blood tests would come back negative because when you stop eating gluten you stop producing antibodies to it. To gain a 'positive' blood test would require you to go back to eating gluten for around 6 weeks or more- eating 4 slices of bread (or the equivilant)
  15. Glad you found it!! Good luck in Spain!. We went to Spain in the summer and found it quite easy eating there!!
  16. Hi and welcome!! It is difficult to say how accurate the tests were for your son without knowing what they were. The 2 most commonly (and accurate) tests are; Anti Tissue Transglutiminase IgA (Ttg) Anti Endomysial IgA (EMA) It sounds as if your doc has good cause to warrant doing a biopsy coupled with your family history (and yes, your...
  17. Thank you EVERYONE for your kind thoughts and words - and ((((hugs)))) to Laura and Catherine The kids were understandibly upset and we had lots of cuddles Nini - thanks so much for that verse - I have copied it for my son (It made me cry!) Hubby wants to get me another kitten - but it's too raw at the moment. Thanks all
  18. Usually takes a week or 2 for the results to come back. Good Luck
  19. Hi Lyza Jay, I'm sorry you are feeling so rough. I'm in the UK so I know our GI docs work slightly different to the ones in the US regarding celiac disease but I thought I'd add my thoughts. If you've been gluten-free for 3 yrs I would guess that your doc wants to do biopsies to rule out any other conditions/to see if your villi have healed...
  20. Feeling really choked up this morning as my poor sweet kitty Felix passed away He was the most placid, friendly dopey cat - marvellous with my kids. My sons used to carry him over their arm like a handbag! but he'd still be purring away. It was expected - he was in heart failure but *sigh*....I will really miss him It's funny how pets...
  21. 2kids4me - I will be thinking of you (& Matt) Hoping it isn't something serious. Hope he gets the scan done asap - then you'll know what you're dealing with. With 3 boys, I totally understand that all consuming anxiety and worry about your kids (well, what Mother doesn't!??) I have a 12yr old boy too!! (My youngest) Fingers crossed for...

  24. Hi Sissy, I believe you have to make 500 posts before you can do that I'm afraid!! Get posting!!!
  25. Hi and welcome!! You both sound as if you could have symptoms of celiac disease. Are you and your son still eating gluten?? If you are you should get blood tests done. These are the tests you need for the celiac panel Antigliadin (AGA) IgA Antigliadin (AGA) IgG Anti Endomysial (EMA) Anti Tissue Transglutiminase (tTg) IgA Total Serum...
