  1. The article's focus was on CHRONIC alcohol abuse (i.e. alcoholics)and does not seem applicable to a once- a- week glass of alcohol. Like anything else, moderation is the key. If you are newly DXed and your gut is bothering you, lay off the alcohol for a while. (I had to myself--my GI tract was in flames ) Like anything else, common sense rules...
  2. Looks like Skylark and I were posting at the same time. Also looks like we have the same opinion regarding the thyroid. I see she has found you some inexpensive testing. Fantastic! Skylark comes through again!
  3. Some people on here were told they were bipolar and as it turns out, they were NOT. Gluten and malabsorption from celiac can cause a multitude of problems hon. I was so overwrought from it, I thought sure I was going to lose my freakin mind. But, I still have it. I am concerned that you are not having more good days than bad days and have what sound...
  4. or all those layers of undergarments...ugh! but yes, some of those dresses are gorgeous.
  5. In answer to your questions about seratonin? YES! And all the other neurotransmitters and amino acids that are made in the gut that regulate mood. Also, vitamin and mineral deficiencies that result from malabsorption will affect you neurologically as well. I had anxiety and depression develop so intensely in me when I was very ill from celiac that...
  6. It is good that you do not have overt symptoms from a glutening (GI distress or neurological, etc.) like many do, but eating food from a shared fryer is NOT a good idea. You are being cross contaminated with gluten, whether you "feel it" or not.
  7. You're such a trooper! So brave.....
  8. Dessert first--- works for me! How was it???!! I LOOOOVE tapioca pudding. My favorite lunch as a kid (besides PB and J for about 6 years straight ) happened when my big sister was in charge. We got hot fudge sundaes for lunch. And a stern: "Don't tell Ma!"
  9. Here in reality land, we are having white pizza with 4 cheeses, garlic and broccoli tonight and a side of red bell pepper soup (encore! encore!) Because I am not especially perky right now, we are using MarilynR and KarenG's most excellent suggestion: CHEBE dough for the crust. I have to say, that stuff is damn good. Hubs is having the oatmeal...
  10. Oh, honey--that just sounds awful. However did you manage to choke it down? Lamb shanks.....my favorite. (drool drool) tapenade, cream brulee. You're killin me, woman.
  11. You're making me jealous, Irisheart! I'd love to purchase meat from the farmer! The newly adopted dog was ready to do backflips for a pinch of the bun. She's a hoot!
  12. Doesn't sound odd to me. I did that myself for many years. "How can I make this better?" --or if we tasted something extraordinary down in NYC or Seattle or in Maine or in Ireland (or wherever the hell we were), I'd start the wheels in my head..."ok, how did she DO that?" and then go home and try to recreate it. I met Jasper White once at his restaurant...
  13. Well, if there are no other reasons for you to have the big D --you aren't sick and you do not normally have it and you did not eat anything with gluten in it---then, why wouldn't there be a reason to suspect the wheat flour as your source of CC? Makes sense to me! Guess there will be no more baking with gluten for you! I honestly do not know...
  14. Just wondering....um, where is the original poster? Chef?? Are you coming back? You have not been back since this first post. These sweet people have poured their hearts out telling you what they miss. Hello??
  15. You know, guys....I read through this whole thread (and felt a little bit sad, truth be told) but I also realized there is almost always a "plan B" for most of these foods and ways to make them taste good. I have to say that I completely agree with meatball man's statement--he said he misses the convenience of eating whatever he wants, wherever he wants...
  16. Good news! Simona posted a pierogis recipe in the recipe section! Check it out:
  17. Well, now you made ME smile, C-KIP! Thanks a bunch. I needed that today.
  18. Go ahead---have both!
  19. Hon, you had the blood test done while off gluten. That is going to affect the result and possibly give you a false negative. Also, some people are serio-negative celiacs. (like me) My blood panel was negative. Twice. Everything else I would say to you, Mushroom and Skylark, et al. said so eloquently, so I'll just say "see above." Bottom line...
  20. Try some So Delicious Coconut milk. In the dairy section. Red Carton. Delicious with your cookies or cereal and works well in recipes and has tons of calcium. They make "ice cream" too! gluten-free, DF, and SF!
  21. My bet is rampant cross- contamination (CC) with gluten eaters. I noticed you wrote you only started "taking it seriously" 6 months ago--which means you still consumed gluten for many months after a Celiac DX. Not wise, kiddo. You need some veggies in your diet and you really need to avoid CC. Hopefully, you have your own containers of foods...
  22. Pork tenderloin with roasted garlic and a port wine mushroom sauce, oven-baked sweet potato fries, homemade applesauce and homemade corn bread. The sun's out. Makes me more ambitious, I guess.
  23. Sound minds? Us?! Hang in there, hon!! We were ALL newbies once! Any help you need, we are here!
  24. Hubs and I can plow through a jumbo bag in no time
  25.  oh sweetie, there IS no competition. I rule. xxoo IH
