  1. I think so!! After becoming so quiet when I was very ill, I am back to being "chatty me"...so perhaps my blathering is pent up stuff for 3 years!! Don't feel too bad about this! I think it is only natural to talk about it. It's a pretty interesting topic--to some. Some people say "OMG! that's my sister, she had this test, that test and she's still...

I agree. If it were not for the internet and my endless research (and my refusal to believe that what I had going on was inexplicable--just "stress"), I would never have been able to figure out what the hell was going on. I actually had one doctor (who knew I was exploring all avenues and researching my symptoms)tell me to "stop trying so hard to...

Oh sweetie, no worries! I do not think any of us took offense at all--believe me, we are all laughing that you thought 60 was "older". My 84- year- old mother hangs out with women in her 60's because she said she "cannot stand to be around" the depressing "old" people that are her peers  My Mom says age is "mind over matter--if you do not mind...
  5. It's just appalling that people in the medical profession still think celiac disease (or gluten intolerance) is rare!!! for pete's sake. Read a medical journal once and a while...stay current!! OMG--this makes me nutz!!

Ditto, ditto and ditto, dear 'shroom! I was wondering who would pick up on that"people in their 60's" thing I know our sweet GlutenFree Manna did not mean any disrespect for us "older people" (I'm 54) Now, I'm just teasing here!! I agree. My Dad did whatever the doctor said. I went to dozens of appts. with him as he gradually declined...
  7. holymotherofpearl!!...I had a giarddia infection back in 1999...that is no fun AT all.... yikes....just had this image of you in the woods, flashlight in mouth, balancing precariously........poor 'shroom.... From what I know of you, you made the best of it, no doubt!
  8. gosh, we're STILL working on that handshake??? who's in charge!!??
  9. I saw a recipe in a magazine where the cook said she was cooking for gluten-free people and she used spelt instead of wheat...um, hullo??? he called you a freak?!! well, he's a (fill in the blank)......
  10. My issue is with people who call eating gluten-free a "fad"....fad? Celiac disease almost killed me As I often say...there needs to be a better understanding of what 'gluten intolerant' really means. I always cringe when someone says it's an "allergy"....sigh... I suppose it's easier than explaining "It's an autoimmune response to the...." by...
  11. wow..see, I am not living in the bathroom anymore (yippee), so that completely escaped my thought!!
  12. that sounds like fun!!!
  13. yikes...let's hope there aren't any more Damiens!! Fructose causes what kind of reaction, may I ask? I'm trying to figure out why I am bloated still...I feel much better and it's not gluten doing it...but...I have a bit of a pouch going down there (I had been stick- thin preDX... edited...scratch that... I read about fructose malabsorption...I...
  14. hi "chill" I had trouble with peppermint tea. It was suggested to me as a "stomach soother" when I was still undiagnosed and had a ton of gastro upset. I felt awful! It burned my mouth, throat and tummy and I had the D. bummer

 When I told my Mom to ask her doctor about her fatigue, insomnia and "sadness" after my Dad died, and to please check her thyroid levels and her Vit D....her doctor (the one who also treats my sister for her type 1 diabetes, hypothyroid, high BP and a dozen other things) snarked "Is SHE (meaning me) a doctor"? My Mom replied "No, but...

My mother, sister and the rest...all believe that the doctor is right and they should follow their recommendations and do not question anything. They take all their meds and continue to feel like crap. They KNOW all the mistakes that were made during my search for an answer and yet, they still do not see it...sigh My experiences tell me otherwise....
  17. A year of diarrhea is a big red flag. I had it BAD myself...then, I would go the opposite and be backed up for days..UGH! You are right...something is going on. You are probably dehydrated as a result. Drink a lot of water. Your other symptoms are also common to celiac. As I said, keep pushing until you get an answer. You do not need to suffer...

yup! my Mom's long-simmering anxiety, chronic constipation, GERD, bouts with insomnia, and hypothyroidism aren't symptoms either.... She works out at a gym and is active and is 84--- and she said she's "too old to change"...ok, Ma..whatever you want. She did consent to changing her cereal to gluten-free Chex....hey, it's a start...
  19. Well, aside from his suggestion to resume gluten, he is being very wise!! A DEXA scan at our age is a good idea. Bone loss is common to celiac (and in people with low D or cal/mag levels) and so, we need to monitor that. Perhaps the supplementation of Vit D will turn things around for you. Dairy should be avoided for the first few months. Lactase, which...

wow--so you have met my family?? I agree. I thought that by watching me deteriorate for 3+ years, they would see why it is essential for them to take charge and be well. They all suffer these symptoms. My husband says "they haven't been pushed to the wall like you were to want to change things". He's right. As long as the doctors keep "symptom-managing...

yeah,my sister with diabetes (type 1), hypothryoid, and a few other issues told me "I don't have bowel issues like you!!" (she did not read carefully what I sent apparently) Perhaps I will have to let it go too...

Sorry, Roda...I feel your frustration and I know NOW that my Dad certainly suffered from--and ultimately died from --complications from gluten. I recently was tested and I carry two DQ2 genes--one from each parent. My Mom has accepted it well and at 84 has decided she will "try gluten lite". Since she is relatively healthy and active (in better shape than...
  23. OMG! the amount of information they DON'T know about celiac is astonishing! Extra-intestinal symptoms are MORE prevalent that GI issues. The long list of my strange --and seemingly unassociated--symptoms was what delayed my diagnosis. ARRGH!! Constipation IS a celiac symptom...this guy needs to be told he is WRONG!! glad you are in good hands now...
  24. No No No! No gluten for you! Do not undo all the good you have done so far! I wouldn't do it. Just my opinion. It takes a while (MONTHS) to see results after going gluten-free. You are still healing. PLEASE have your FOLATE levels checked. And B-12 too!! Those 2 deficiencies are very common with us and that is why I was so exhausted. I went...
