  1. I'm doing the Whole30 diet right now, which is a really strict version of paleo - no dairy, legumes, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, white potatoes, grains of any type or manufactured oils (olive oil, coconut oil, animal fats like lard, and ghee are ok - things like canola, soybean, sunflower are not). They've got a book - but I've mostly been using...
  2. Glad you had good luck with the food here! Chicago has become much better - even in the couple of years since I was diagnosed. Another Chicago place I want to reccommend: The Bountiful Eatery - all 100% gluten free! It's new and I only went for the first time last weekend. Had a delicious buffalo burger in a gluten free pita, with quinoa salad and...
  3. The website appears to be in German only, but there is an e-mail address that they indicate in English that you can send questions to about travel to Austria - Mrs. Petra Pries - Open Original Shared Link
  4. Schar should be widely available in Vienna - don't know about other brands. There's a couple of restaurants around that can accomodate celiac - the Austrian Celiac society is supposed to have a good list. There's also quite a lot of ethnic restaurants around the city - like Indian and Turkish - that might work well for gluten free. Even though you speak...
  5. Just because they have a gluten free menu, it does NOT mean that the food is safe. Lots of restaurants don't know what they're doing, and they just list gluten free to appeal to trendy dieters. You don't have to know the chef personally, but you do need to talk to the chef or the manager and make sure they know what they're doing. Ask if the food is made...
  6. If you want to go, eat ahead of time and just order a drink. That's what I do.
  7. The ones I had before diagnosis are pretty much the same (migraines, fatigue & irritability). But I've got a bunch of new symptoms, mostly stomach related, that I didn't have pre-diagnosis (bloating, cramps, gas, C and/or D). I also get a rash on my rear end that I never had before. Don't know if it's DH or something else, but it comes pretty reliably...
  8. Chicago has gotten really good for gluten free over the past couple of years. If you like fine dining and don't mind spending a little, I highly reccomend Senza, which is a new, totally gluten free restaurant on the noth side. They've got a 4-course or a 9-course tasting menu at dinner time, and they're also open for Sunday brunch. The chef there used...
  9. I've used it and have not noticed any side effects. I don't take it regularly becuase it's so expensive, but if I'm having stomach issues due to gluten contamination (or anything else) I've found it can be helpful to take for a week or two afterward.
  10. There's a gluten free bakery in Paris called Helmut Newcake. They have a lunch menu and sell food to go, as well as having a ton of pasteries and other baked goods. Very tasty and owner is celiac. Paris also has a certified gluten free restaurant called Noglu that I haven't tried. I think it's only been open for a few months. Celiac isn't really...
  11. My hair is thicker and my skin is softer. Yay to absorbing nutrients!
  12. I went through University of Illinois - they have a program for undergrads in Vienna that they've been running since the 80s. I'm familiar with IES, though - I did a short summer program with them in Berlin during college. The cuisine is not the best for gluten free - but at least in Europe things tend to be cooked fresh, so if you can get across what you...
  13. I was not gluten free at the time, but I did my study abroad in Austria several years ago, so maybe I can help a bit with that part of things. If you're in Vienna, you may be able to find some restaurants that can accomodate you - but celiac is not very well known in Austria, so I wouldn't count on it too much. Austrian cuisine is not very gluten-free friendly...
  14. Just wanted to share some good experiences I had in the Boulder/Denver area last weekend: Beau Jo's Pizza: Huge gluten free menu, including appetizers, beer, pizza, sandwiches. Wait staff was knowledgable and food was tasty. Had good gluten-free garlic bread. We went to the Arvada location, but there's several in the area. Hacienda Colorado: Large...
  15. Just read this article in the New York Times Magazine and thought people here would be interested. It's about a little boy whose rheumetoid arthritis was treated through a gluten free diet. He was tested and found negative for celiac diease, but his parents went ahead and dropped gluten and dairy anyway, and he's now arthritis-free. Open Original Shared...
  16. Could be the amount of gluten you're getting. I can only think of a couple of times when I had an immediate reaction (D) and I'm pretty sure it was due to the large amount of gluten the food was contaminated with. My usual reaction to a small amount of contamination is a migraine the next afternoon, with bloating, gas and other stomach issues coming the...
  17. I've tried every gluten free beer I've come across, and I haven't had any issues - except with ones like Daura that try to use barley and 'deglutinize it'. Bard's, New Grist, New Planet, Redbridge etc. have all been fine for me, as far as I can tell, and I'm pretty sensitive. If you're really worried about it, I would highly, highly reccommend trying...
  18. Some get pretty close, depending on what type of beer you like. I find the ones with a lot of hops taste more like a beer than the ones with a more mild flavor - maybe because the hopps taste covers up the sorghum flavor. The best gluten free beer I've had is from Harvester, but it's hard to find unless you live in Oregon/Washington, or you order online...
  19. Just a caution with the Go Picnic's: some of the things they include in the boxes are made on shared equipment, so depending on your kid's level of sensitivity, you may need to scrap some of the items. When I used them last year, the Popped potato chips were made on shared equipment, as well as a couple of other items. Everything is clearly labelled, though...
  20. "In airports, we often get oatmeal at Starbuck's." Starbucks oatmeal isn't gluten free (it's not made of certified gluten-free oats, so it's like eating Quaker or any regular brand, which is usually contaminated with wheat). Better to bring certified gluten free oats, and just ask for some hot water for them when you get your coffee.
  21. I fly through O'Hare pretty frequently, and I'm not aware of any gluten free options at the airport that are really safe, besides pre-packeged snacks like Kind Bars. Depending on what part of the airport you're in, there may be places like Chili's that make some gluten-free accomodations, but nothing that I'd really trust. And some of the terminals are...
  22. My family's traditional holiday dessert is a Swedish-style rice pudding, which is naturally gluten free. Easy to make: it's a 1/2 cup of rice cooked in 2 1/2 cups whole milk until the rice starts to soften. Then you add an egg beaten into 1/2 a cup of half and half, and you cook everything over low heat until it thickens - takes about 15 minutes, and you...
  23. I really hope these 'low gluten' beers disappear. Haven't tried Omission (and won't) but I react to Estrella beer, which is supposed to be 6 ppm. I'll stick to drinking the acutal gluten free beer - New Planet and Green's are good and Harvester beer (out of Portland, OR, like Omission) is really good, too. Harvester isn't widely available yet, but I think...
  24. This is a great recipe - just use butternut squash instead of pumpkin. Open Original Shared Link
  25. There's 3 completely gluten free restaurants in Chicago now - all opened within the last few months. Senza, Filo and the Bountiful Eatary. Been to Senza and Filo - both are good, though Filo's kind of a hole-in-the-wall. Haven't been to Bountiful Eatery yet. Senza's a fine-dining place and pretty pricey, but worth it! And we've got an Italian restaurant...
