  1. It's not a gluten free site, but this one has some good suggestions for packing creative lunches for kids, using leftovers & fairly easy recipes: Open Original Shared Link It's based on the Japanese bento box, but it's not all Japanese recipes. Lots of rice and polenta suggestions. Hummus or nut butter w/veggies to dip is also a good choice, or hard...
  2. I've recently gotten a red, bumpy rash on the inside of my left arm. Sometimes it shows up on the right arm in the same spot. Usually, the bumps will go away in a few days, but the skin remains itchy and discolored. This has been going on for a few weeks. I went through a period of 1-2 years as a teenager when I had the same symptoms much, much worse...
  3. I'd tell your friend and see if the menu could accommodate you - or see if parts of the menu (salad, grilled meat, etc.) are safe. I expect a lot of caterers are familiar with gluten issues - I'm planning my own wedding right now and I've found that to be the case. And after all, if you were severely allergic to peanuts or some other food, you'd tell your...
  4. I'm getting married next September and we're considering honeymoon locations. We've been looking a lot at central/south america - partly because it seems like it's easy to be gluten-free down there. Europe is another possibility - especially Italy, Spain or Greece. I travel to Europe frequently for work, but I've only been there once since going gluten...
  5. Congratulations! I'm getting married next September, and I'm looking at doing a bachelorette weekend in Vegas over the summer, so this is super helpful!
  6. Is it possible that the problem is eating several 'gluten free' products at once or on the same day? For example, if you're eating two pieces of bread (10 ppm each, let's say), plus a glass of rice milk (5 ppm) and a couple of gluten-free cookies (10 ppm each), then you're getting 45 ppm that day. Maybe each of those separately wouldn't make you react,...
  7. Tell your husband that celiac disease CAN kill you. Before my aunt was diagnosed, she needed major surgery because substantial parts of her small intestine were actually destroyed - literally, the tissue was dead - and she was quite close to dying herself. She also had her gall bladder removed & had further intestinal surgery a few years after her celiac...
  8. DaLuciano's in River Grove sells their pizza frozen. Not quite take out, but close - and it's really good. You could probably get it to go if you called. Aurelio's (various locations) has gluten free pizza and does take-out and delivery, but I've heard it's not great. I haven't tried it myself.
  9. Hi all, I've been gluten free for about 5 months following positive blood & genetic tests. My symptoms were mainly neurological (migraines and chronic headaches, fatigue, irritability, dizziness - also low on several vitamins/minerals) and have mostly resolved/improved. Within about a week, I felt way better - I hadn't even realized the fatigue was...
  10. You should ask about the meat if you're eating bbq at a restaurant. A lot of places use spice rubs on the meat prior to barbecuing or smoking it, and these could potentially contain gluten.
  11. I feel your pain. I LOVE beer - I miss it much more than bread or sweets. I've tried all the gluten-free beers that are available in my area (Chicago) and here are a few thoughts... Green's - my favorite - partly because it comes in 3 flavors so it feels more like a real beer - they've got double dark, amber ale, and pale ale. Double Dark is my favorite...
  12. I'm sorry for your situation - that sucks! I know you probably know this already, but I did want to mention that eating gluten when you're a celiac can cause long-term, irreversible damage to your intestines and other organs. Before my aunt was finally diagnosed, she had to undergo major surgery to remove her gall bladder and significant amounts of her...
  13. Beans & Rice, lentils, grits, asian rice noodles - 'ethnic' stores can be great - I eat corn tortillas in place of bread and it's much, much, much cheaper than gluten free breads. Sometimes, you just have to do without the old staples. I only occasionally eat gluten free pasta or bread now. After 6 months of being gluten free, I don't crave it that...
  14. I saw a doc at the University of Chicago Celiac Center, and she told me that they don't actually know a lot about gluten intolerance. All they can tell for sure is that gluten intolerance mimics many of the symptoms of celiac disease, but doesn't cause the actual intestinal damage. Gluten intolerance could be a precursor of celiac (at least in some people...
  15. I wouldn't chance the organic wheat. I, too, had migraines my whole life before going gluten free in September. Since then, I've only had three headaches total - and they're all from eating something that was contaminated with wheat, including 100% organic salad dressing. I don't have an 'official' celiacs diagnoses, as I stopped eating gluten without...
  16. I've experienced dizziness - usually first thing in the morning so I thought it was low blood sugar. But it went away after going gluten free.
  17. We've dealt with this by mostly eating foods that are naturally gluten free. Lots of beans, lentils, rice, potatoes - and I eat corn tortillas with everything instead of bread. Ethnic cookbooks or websites w/recipes are a great place to look for new ideas. We eat tons of Indian and Mexican food.
  18. I flew United last fall to Europe for work and had no trouble getting a gluten free meal in Economy. Don't know if that's because I went through the travel agency my company uses, but I didn't have a problem nor did I have an extra charge. I've also flown Lufthansa and Scandinavian airways and both were very accommodating.
  19. DaLuciano's in River Grove is good, and has a large gluten-free menu - they have a separate kitchen for making gluten-free food. The Lettuce Entertain you restaurants have a lot of gluten free options. There's several of these at the Oak Brook mall not far from Elmhurst. Some are pricey, but you might have good luck with Big Bowl. There's a new Indian...
  20. I used to have the exact same symptoms before going gluten-free - low level headache and blah (usually about 10 days a month) with horrible migraines 3-4 times a month. Since going gluten free, both have almost completely gone away - and I can usually pinpoint them to a cross-contamination issue when I get either one. I think the low-level headache is definitely...
