  1. I was at a loss with this, too. "It just depends on how sensitive she is," the manager kept saying when I told her my daughter has celiac. Well, really? I thought any gluten or possibility of gluten was too much. I left with nothing because I don't trust that the vendors do wash the equipment. Too much risk, I think.
  2. Could it be lactose intolerance?
  3. I found the Udi's hamburger buns on sale at our local Byerly's. Just thought people in the Twin Cities would like to know!
  4. JessicaNYC - I have noticed less anxiety now that I'm gluten free. It's been about three months for us. Before going gluten free, I tried SamE, and that helped. Yoga, meditation and all that begins with breathing deeply. Even if you can get 1 minute of deep relaxing breathing in at work, it might help. Hang in there and get your vacation planned! It will...
  5. I especially agree with this one: "Gluten" and "Glucose" sound too similar My husband gets it mixed up and often says "gluctose". This causes lots of confusion at restaurants as you can imagine.
  6. Yahoo! Stay out of that hospital! Stay healthy! Thanks for sharing the good news!
  7. This sounds so much like celiac. My daughter has it and she never had the classic symptoms so the doctors didn't catch it. She was constipated, took the MiraLax, ate more fiber, ended up in the ER, etc. It was only 2.5 months ago that we got the diagnosis and we started connecting the dots. The distended stomach is one of her issues as well. I don't know...
  8. I hear you. It can feel like the domino effect. You're a good Mom for getting all these tests done and trying to find more answers. At a clinic I was working at, a Mom and her 7 year old daughter were diagnosed with celiac and the Mom refuses to go gluten free. We're in the thick of it, too. We just found a pediatrician who has celiac and have an...
  9. Vent away. I have the same thing going on - relatives who treat it as a hassle and an annoyance and are therefore going to pretend it isn't real. In the meantime, focus your energy on getting your son better and try not to let the relatives get to you. I know it's hard but hang in there. When he feels better, you will, too.
  10. It's super overwhelming at first - you're not alone! Your idea of sticking to whole foods is a good one. I shop at SuperTarget and they do carry gluten free stuff. We are only about 2 months into the process, and I've discovered that if I buy something that says gluten free on the front, we are OK. Rice Chex cereal, Bisquick Gluten Free, etc are OK. But we...
  11. I contacted them a few weeks ago and they told me the same thing - they were now gluten free, but moving to a cross contamination facility. I told them, on behalf of celiacs everywhere, to please rethink that, but, well, I guess they didn't listen. Stock the freezer before it's too late!
  12. It's really amazing the lack of understanding. It's my 13-year-old daughter who has celiac. We gave a letter written by the GI clinic to each one of her teachers. Yet, on the last day of school, when they were all having cookies and doughnuts, the teacher insisted that the doughnuts were gluten free and that my daughter could/should have one. Luckily, my...
  13. I just went through something similar -- dehydrated and a couple bags of fluids -- and Urgent Care said it was colitis. Though I had the colonoscopy, the GI hasn't really said if it's acute or chronic or just an inflammation or what. I wish I had some advise for you but all I can do is commiserate. I am getting the same set of non answers. It's very frustrating...
  14. I'm in the same boat with my daughter. She starts high school this fall, too. Going gluten free will do wonders. She has no more abdominal pain, fewer upset stomach, no more migraines and her anxiety is down. If you have follow up appointments, have his vitamin levels and thyroid checked. (I learned that from this group.) She is low on Vitamin D, so I have...
  15. That's fabulous! Thank you for sharing the good news with us.
  16. I can tell you that my daughter is confirmed as having celiac and we had been through the same route with OCD tendencies, including CBT. But after about 2.5 months gluten free, she doesn't seem to be having the problem any more. She's 13 and while I feel guilty (as a Mom) that I didn't get her diagnosed sooner, I am told we actually caught it young. She has...
  17. I'm glad you brought this up, as I have a family reunion coming and I am sure, collectively, they will choose to ignore the fact that we've gone gluten free. So, what then? We have separate meals all week? I know that my Mom acts concerned, but it is basically something she doesn't want to hassle with. For example, she tried to give my husband some Italian...
  18. My blood test was negative, but I went gluten free for my daughter's sake. We've been gluten-free for about 2.5 months and we both feel better. I felt that same fatigue and it's getting better. I feel like a person again!
  19. I believe gratitude is really important, too! I am thankful that the array of symptoms my daughter has had (migraines, anxiety, rashes, stomach aches and pain, heartburn) can all be solved by simply going gluten free. We started the medical journey in second grade and finally got answers in eighth. I am thankful we do not have to rely on a lifetime...
  20. We stopped going out to eat as much, too. But don't miss your book club if you like going! Just eat before you go to the restaurant, and have a beverage while you're there. If the restaurant can't/won't cater to people who have to be gluten free, that is their loss. Many restaurants cater to vegetarians. Vegetarians get to make a choice about their diet....
  21. We're at about 2 months, too, and I have found this week to be really difficult. The breadsticks at Olive Garden looked so good and yet, I didn't like them all that much before! Don't beat yourself up. You realize that you feel better gluten free and you'll go back to it and stick with it.
  22. On allrecipes.com, there is a black bean and quinoa recipe I tried and it was good. In fact, I'm making it again this week. Be sure to rinse the quinoa before cooking it. I've heard if you don't, it will be bitter.
  23. We are two months into being gluten free and I think my hair is getting thicker. I'll let my daughter know about the mosquito benefit - they used to love her. Thanks for starting this topic! There are big health benefits with being gluten free but I hadn't stopped to notice the small ones.
  24. Are GNC vitamins any good? I asked there today about D3 and the guy kept pushing chewables that had calcium mixed in. Left because I was unsure.
  25. I do feel like if I'm not cooking, I'm reading labels. It does feel like a job. But it has increased my awareness of just how much processed food we were eating, despite me thinking we weren't. So I've come to the conclusion that the trade off is better health. Then it starts to feel less like a job. :-)
