Hooray for you! I'm glad you finally got tested. My Mom had it too and like you, I was in denial for a long time. But I'm so glad I finally went gluten-free. Glad you did too. I hope your tests show great improvement!

ARCHIVED Hello!
bartfull replied to CommaHolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What they said! But I just wanted to add that even though some doctors still claim that most folks with celiac are thin, that is not true. There are quite a few people with celiac who are overweight. (I speculate that becuase we aren't getting the nutrients from our food that we overcompensate by overeating. Sugar will make even a celiac gain weight... -
ARCHIVED Pledge Furniture Polish
bartfull replied to mac3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The wheat grass/barleygrass thing is understandable, but it is not that the grass itself contains gluten, but because it is most likely cross-contaminated. If it is harvested on the same equipment and stored in the same bins as the grains (which it most likely is) it will be contaminated. Just about everyone here agrees that we should not consume those grasses... -

ARCHIVED Pledge Furniture Polish
bartfull replied to mac3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've never heard of a paper towel with gluten, but I know some of them have corn. I checked into it and found out that Bounty doesn't have corn and that's what I have always used anyway, for years and years. But has anyone else noticed lately that they aren't like they used to be? They separate into two layers and are not nearly as strong as they used to... -
And I just liked Irish's post. One good turn deserves another!

ARCHIVED Pledge Furniture Polish

Hairspray is different because you are spraying it around your face and will undoubtedly breathe some of it in. Then it gets in the back of your throat where you will wind up swallowing it. Furtiture polish though, I spray it on the item I want to polish and my face isn't anywhere near it. And it usually doesn't spray in that fine mist that will get into... -
ARCHIVED Importance Of Getting Professionally Diagnosed
bartfull replied to JBarnett's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Quite a few of us here have no official diagnosis. As long as you know you feel better off gluten I don't see any reason you need a doctor's diagnosis. Do read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section, and then check out the DH section. (If that doesn't scare you into being scrupulously strict on the diet I don't know what will!) So welcome, and if... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
NCDave, I hate to tell you this but as far as I know, the only way to be safe from corn is to have your meds made at a compounding pharmacy. I get a bottle of 120 capsules of Tylenol (325 mg.) for about 37 dollars. Yeah. Ridiculously expensive. I use them sparingly which is not a bad thing because they aren't good for the liver. I would get asperin instead... -

"Not everyone on the forum agrees, but I consulted with a nutritionist" Coffngrl, it's not that we disagree, it's just that some of us wound up with nutritionists who were clueless about celiac. I WISH I could have found one like yours, but unfortunately the one I went to suggested wheat grass, and finally admitted she didn't know much about celiac. ... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Because corn is pollenated through the air and the wind can blow the pollen for miles and miles, I think it is likely that there is very little NON GMO corn left in this country. -
ARCHIVED Best-Tasting, Closest-To-Wheat gluten-free Flour?
bartfull replied to Justscared's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks. I used sunflower oil the first time and butter the second time. Tomorrow I'll try the coconut oil and make another batch. -
ARCHIVED Meringue Listed On The Unsafe List...why?
bartfull replied to tka's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Cream of tartar is safe. Home made merangue is just egg whites, cream of tartar, and sugar. All are safe ingredients. I'm thinking that maybe some of the commercial merangue powders might contain gluten and that's why it is on the list? -
ARCHIVED New (To Me) Baking Mix
bartfull replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It seems that chocolate is the one thing that translates into gluten-free better than all others. I have yet to eat any kind of gluten-free chocolate baked good that didn't taste the same as the gluten counterpart. Brownies, cookies, cakes - they're all good. -
ARCHIVED Shopped But Feel Like I Failed!
bartfull replied to GFAnnie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I guess I'm just cynical, but the way so many people EVERYWHERE seem to do a slapdash job, I'm thinking the folks in food factories might too. I mean, I see it at the grocery store where they don't rotate the stock. I see it at my insurance agent's where I drop off my payment several days before the due date and they don't process it in time to avoid a late... -
ARCHIVED Mary Kay Botanical Effects
bartfull replied to Emily-ss's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I used to love Mary Kay, but I don't use it anymore because I know for certain that at least some of their products contain gluten. Mostly it just goes on the skin and not in the mouth so I know there are some folks who wouldn't have any concerns (except about lipstick), but my very favorite Mary Kay product was the extra emolient night cream - you know that... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms
bartfull replied to Rae2756's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wouldn't rule out celiac just because you don't think your symptoms are bad enough. A lot of folks here had NO symptoms and were shocked when they were diagnosed with celiac. It sounds like you have decided to go gluten-free without the official diagnosis and that's fine. Just be aware that if you do indeed have celiac, you could be damaging your body with... -
ARCHIVED Shopped But Feel Like I Failed!
bartfull replied to GFAnnie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shared facility doesn't bother me, but shared equipment does. I wouldn't trust that they could clean all the gluten out of shared equipment. I think some folks here don't worry about that, but I wouldn't take the chance. I think that if they disclose that it is made on shared equipment, they think it might be a problem for us too. -
I have read story after story on this site about doctors who know nothing about celiac. Now, I know that doctors, like teachers and just about anyone else in technical fields, must partake in continuing education. And celiac has been such a "hot topic" for a while now. Yet so many doctors STILL know nothing about it. I'm just wondering, if they haven...

ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh yeah, I forgot something really important! You remember all the uproar about BPA's in plastic? It was in the clear plastics like individual servings of water come in and the plastic linings in food cans. Well, a lot of companies have now replaced that with a corn-based plastic. I really did get sick one time from bottled water! (The cloudy plastic that... -

Open Original Shared Link This website lists gluten-free restarants but you need to read the reviews and see if they not only have a gluten-free menu, but follow safe practices. I did notice though that at least a couple are completely gluten-free facilities, so those are safe and they don't look expensive. -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You are more than welcome! The last time I had corn (I tried a vitamin C that didn't SAY it was from citric acid so I thought it MIGHT be rose hips), I literally thought I was going to die. Screaming D followed by a drop in my core body temperature and muscle spasms that almost felt like seizures. For the next several days I was totally wiped out. Could... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?

Oh yeah, some of these corn websites say coffee can be a problem, but I drink Folgers every day, and Dunkin Donuts coffee when it goes on sale, and I have had no problems. THANK GOD!!!!! And you CAN find some cookies and crackers in the health food store that are corn-free. Go to Pamela's website and they actually list the stuff they sell that is corn... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK, check out these websites. Try not to let it overwhelm you. Remember, most whole foods are OK so you're not going to starve. And although I hardly ever eat in restaurants, I DID eat at Outback once and explained to the waiter that I couldn't have gluten OR corn. He talked to the chef and came back and showed me the items on the gluten-free menu that were... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Corn ?
bartfull replied to MichLab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, my intolerance to corn came on about two or three weeks after going gluten-free, but intolerances CAN happen to anybody at any time. Corn makes me sicker than gluten does, and yes, it is in EVERYTHING. EXCEPT - Canyon Bakehouse bread, Against the Grain Products, Hagen Daz ice creams (Some of them at least - check the labels.) Blue Bunny All Natural...
