  1. Yeah, I didn't think of red pepper. Thanks, Lisa!
  2. Nightshades are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. I don't think you have to worry about anything that says spices. SEASONINGS are a different story. Seasonings may have just about anything in them - including gluten.
  3. Garlic, onion, basil and oregano are good in Italian dishes. And no, you don't have to have tomato sauce to have Italian. You can make meatballs with these spices and have them on a sandwich or with rice. Sage is good with chicken or pork. Rosemary makes plain white rice tasty. It's one of those spices that come like little twigs which I don't care...
  4. Julie, I was not trying to trash your family, but when you said they won't cook, and especially when you told us they wouldn't even get the things on your grocery list when you sent them to the store, it sounded to me like you were letting them walk on you. You're one of "us", and I hate it when one of "us" is undergoing unneccesary hardships because their...

  6. My very favorite gluten-free bread. Glad you found it, and for such a low price! (7 dollars a loaf where I live.)
  7. Because I have such a problem with CORN, I checked the rice companies to make sure there was no corn CC. (Some companies "polish" rice with corn starch.) I wrote to Uncle Ben's, explained I was a celiac who was also "allergic" to corn. They followed up with both an email AND a phone call. No gluten. No corn. I have been using Uncle Ben's for almost three...
  8. I LOVE cottage cheese! And like you, I don't like it with fruit. I was never crazy about pasta so if I was having spaghetti sauce I would heat the sauce (but not TOO hot) and pour it over cottage cheese. I also prefer cottage cheese instead of salad dressing. And when I used to live where I could get edible fish and chips, I always asked for a side of cottage...
  9. Actually, I believe it WOULD harm her to breathe the flour dust. It would get into the back of her throat and she would end up swallowing it. The only way I would ever allow myself to be in a room with flour dust would be if I were wearing a respirator. Not a dust mask mind you, but a respirator like people who spray-paint cars wear. I doubt your daughter...
  10. I saw this article about how to get off PPI's. Maybe it'll help, even though you've already quit. As a matter of fact, they say if you go off them suddenly and then go back on them you could have even worse problems! Open Original Shared Link
  11. I'm right there with you on banana strings! I've always had to peel them all off too. Not only that, but I won't eat a banana unless it has lots of salt on it. My grandfather taught me to salt them when I was a little kid and they are really good that way. Once when I was working in an ice cream shop I saw one of my customers salting the banana on her banana...
  12. You have to be VERY careful with used marinade. They SAY if you boil it for at least ten minutes it'll kill any bacteria left in it from the raw meat, but I would just toss it out. If you make enough marinade to put some in a jar and use the rest to soak your meat, the stuff in the jar won't have any bacteria from the raw meat and it will still taste the...
  13. These are the tests you should ask for: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA control test There are also tests for the genes involved, although not everyone who has the genes gets celiac, and some people WITHOUT the genes do.
  14. But you also need to WEAN yourself off the PPI. If you go cold turkey you will get LOTS worse. (I don't have GERD, but I have a friend who does.)
  15. Yeah, if something happened that put you in the hospital for two months, what would they do - eat every meal at a restaurant? A husband, yeah, I hate to say it but they CAN be helpless in the kitchen. But he needs to learn how to take care of himself. It doesn't have to be complicated, but he needs to be able to feed himself. And a 15 year old daughter...
  16. The gluten in grains other than wheat, rye, and barley is not the same. Many, many celiacs do just fine in the traditional gluten-free diet. It's true that SOME of us can't eat corn or other grains, but that is a totally different intolerance. Some of us can't eat nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant), but they contain no gluten. Some of...
  17. Yes, one crumb from the toaster WILL make you sick. In the coping section you will find a thread called "Newbie 101". It'll teach you how to avoid cross-contamination. It takes a bit of learning and can seem overwhelming at first but after a while it becomes second nature. First of all, fresh meats, fruits and vegetables are all naturally gluten-free...
  18. Yeah, on those VERY rare occasions I find something that is corn-free, it is sure to have soy in it. But the problem with corn is that unlike soy, it is not one of the "big 8", so if it is used in processing they don't have to label it. That is why I have only been glutened ONCE since all this started, but I have been corned many times.
  19. I'm with you 100 percent!! I am intolerant to corn and soy, as well as having celiac. I haven't even TRIED gluten-free oats. I guess oats just aren't that important to me. Quinoa? I tried it once and gagged on it. Don't like it at all. I lost nightshades too for a while. Now, after being away from them for a few months I have discovered that I can eat...
  20. You're going through gluten withdrawal. It is an actual physical thing, not just emotional. Brain fog, mood swings, headaches, and constant hunger are the usual symptoms. It usually lasts two or three weeks. What tests did your doctor do? If you're going gluten-free you need to go 100% gluten-free. Read the newbie 101 thread in the coping section...
  21. The safe fruits are bananas, pears PEELED THICKLY, golden delicious apples PEELED THICKLY. Salicylates are mostly on the outsides of the fruit. That means no berries because you can't peel them thickly. There are sals in lots of veggies too. Check out salicylatesensitivity.com for more info.
  22. I am taking tomorrow off! 7 to 12 inches of snow, a high temperature of minus 4 and windchills of minus 27! If anybody comes out to buy a guitar tomorrow they are nuts!
  23. And make sure you read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section.
  24. Vinegar and oil. You could use rice vinegar (it's really good) and olive oil. Peanut butter? I don't know. Never touch the stuff because I have never (even as a kid) liked it. But if you do like it, try organic. Milk? Well some folks have trouble with it and some don't. It sounds to me like your best bet would be an elimination diet. Start with whole...
  25. I eat Lara bars. I have no idea what the calorie count is, but the ones I get have two ingredients - dates and cashews. One bar keeps me going for about two or three hours.
